TheNautilusExplorationProgramTheNautilusExplorationProgramwasfoundedin2008byDr.RobertBallardandisconductedbytheOceanExplorationTrust.OurinternationalprogramcentersonscientificexplorationoftheseafloorlaunchedfromaboardtheExplorationVessel(E/V)Nautilus,a64‐meterresearchvessel.Inadditiontoconductingscientificresearch,theNautilusExplorationProgramoffersitsexpeditionstoexplorersonshorevialivevideo,audio,anddatafeedsfromtheship.WealsobringeducatorsandstudentsofallagesaboardE/VNautilusduringexpeditions,offeringthemhands‐onexperienceinoceanexploration,research,andcommunications.OurGoals

TheNautilusCorpsofExplorationTheinternationalNautilusCorpsofExplorationconsistsofscientists,engineers,communicators,educatorsandstudents.Ourprimaryobjectiveistoexploretheoceanseekingoutnewdiscoveriesinthefieldsofgeology,biology,maritimehistory,archaeology,andchemistrywhilepushingtheboundariesofengineering,technology,educationandcommunications.WeaimtoshareourstoryandoursciencewithexplorersaroundtheworldfromaboardE/VNautilus;andweaspiretoserveasSTEMrolemodelsforthenextgenerationofscientists,engineersandeducators.TheNautilus2013ExpeditionSeasonScientistsaboardNautiluswillexploregeological,archaeological,andbiologicalaspectsoftheGulfofMexicoandCaribbeanSeain2013usingmultibeamsonar,remotelyoperatedvehicles,andtelepresencetechnology.The2013NautilusExplorationProgramseasonwillberoughlyfourmonthsinthefield,includinganexpeditionduringJuneandJuly,andanexpeditionfromOctobertoDecember.TheOceanExplorationTrust,whichconductstheNautilusExplorationProgram,willannounceportsofcallandwaterstobeexploredinDecember2012.

ExplorationVesselNautilus

E/VNautilusisa64‐meterexplorationvesselwith17permanentcrewandberthingfora31‐memberrotatingCorpsofExploration.TheshipcarrieswithittwoRemotelyOperatedVehicles(ROVs)namedHerculesandArgusthatexploretheseafloorinreal‐timeonlineviaourtelepresencetechnology.Anewhulled‐mountedmultibeamsystemwillbeinstalledduringwinter2013.TheshipalsohasaDataLabandWetLabforprocessingdigitaldataandphysicalsamples.Aspartofourefforttoshareourexpeditionswithstudentsandcolleagues,westreamvideofromourROVsandvariouslocationsontheshipliveonourwebsitewww.nautiluslive.org.LivingconditionsforourCorpsofExplorersonEVNautilusconsistofsharedroomswithbunkbedsandsomeaccommodationsrequiresharedshowers.Wesharethreemealsadayinagroupdiningroom.Nautilusalsohasanoutdoorpatioareaandastate‐of‐the‐artindoorloungewithexplorationviewingmonitors.LimitedWiFiinternetisavailableincommonareasforpersonaluseandseverallandlinetelephonesareprovidedinpublicspaces.





E/VNautilusisaworkingscientificresearchandexplorationsea‐goingvessel.Whiletheshipoffersmanyofthecomfortsandconveniencesofhome(suchashotshowers,telephones,andinternet),itisalsoadifficultworkingenvironmentconsistingoftightlivingquarters,incrediblylonghours,andhotandcoldtemperatures.Youwillbelivingaboardashipwithasmallteamofpeoplewhoarefarfromhome,someofwhomhavemanyyearsofsea‐goingexperienceandsomewhodonot.Manyareasontheshipcanbedangerousduringoperationsandwhileunderwayandyouwillbeexpectedtoadheretoallsafetyregulations.Ourcrewalsocannotpredicttheweather,butstrivestokeepE/VNautilussailingincalmseas.Asaselectee,youwillnotbeabletopickyourexactdatesofsail,yourspecifictravelarrangements,yourbunkmates,oryourworkingshift(watch)hours.Selecteesarerequiredtosignamedicalwaiverattestingtheyarefitandhealthyforworkingaboardaresearchvessel.OurNautilusleadershipteamstrivestomakeeverymemberoftheCorpsofExploration’sexperienceasafeandenjoyableone.Ifyouareselectedtosailwithus,youcanexpecttohaveanincredibleone‐of‐a‐kindexperienceandyouwillgettoworkside‐by‐sidewithexceptionalshipmatesfromallovertheworld.TheNautilusExplorationProgramhasbroughtover100internsandeducatorsaboardduringthepast4years,themajorityofwhomhadnevergonetoseabefore,andsomeofthemhavereturnedtoworkaboardNautilusinvariouspositions.

Science&EngineeringInternshipProgramPacket TheNautilusScienceandEngineeringInternshipProgramaimstotrainundergraduateandgraduatestudentsstudyingoceanscience,engineeringandvideo/filmintheat‐seaenvironment.Internpositionsentail2‐5weekperiodsworkingaboardE/VNautilusasDataLoggers,ROVPilots,orVideoEngineers.AllofourinternsspendtheirtimeonNautilusworkingwithawidearrayofscientists,engineers,students,andeducators.Scienceinternslearnhowtomakescientificobservationsandprocessdigitaldataandphysicalsamples.ROVinternslearnhowtomaintainandoperateourexplorationvehiclesandsystems.VideoengineeringandfilminternslearnhowtooperatevideoforourROVsandworkwithourcommunicationsteamtoshareourNautilusstory.Allinternsgainexperienceincommunicationsandleadership,includingparticipatingineducationaloutreachactivities,suchasliveinterviewswithshore.WhileonboardNautilus,allinternswillbeassignedan8‐hourshift,splitintotwo4‐hourwatches.Betweenwatches,internsarealsoexpectedtoassistwithscience,engineering,andeducationalactivitiesaboardtheship,dependingontheirparticularinternship.





CompensationApplicantswhoareselectedforworkaboardE/VNautilusduringthe2013expeditionseasonwillbeprovidedfulltraveltoandfromtheshipintheCaribbeanSeafromtheircurrentcityofresidence,asstatedontheirapplication.InternswillbeprovidedwithroomandboardonNautilusintheformofsharedcabinswithbunksandthreefullmealsperday.Becauseoftheunpredictablenatureofworkingatsea,internsmaynotmaketheirowntravelarrangementstotheship,normaytheytravelontheirownbeforeoraftertheresearchcruise.ApplicationTimeline
