INTRODUCTION TO THE LITURGY OF THE SUNDAY
Jesus is to be the ruler of our lives and hearts. Today we celebrate the solemnity of Our Lord Jesus, King of the Universe. Our celebration
invites us to acknowledge Jesus not only as King of the Universe, but also as the ruler of our lives and hearts. One way to do this is to begin each day with prayer, where we invite Jesus to be the ruler of our lives and to use us in the ways he sees fit. The first reading tells of David being anointed to replace Saul as the king of Israel. The second reading presents a spiritual hymn that describes the sovereignty of Christ. In the Gospel, the good thief, Dismas, asks Jesus to remember him when he comes into his kingdom.
The Feast of Christ the King was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925 as an antidote to secularism, a way of life which leaves God out of people’s thinking and living and organizes his life as if God did not exist. The feast is intended to proclaim in a striking and effective manner Christ's royalty over individuals, families, society, governments, and nations. Today's Mass establishes the titles for Christ's royalty over people: 1) Christ is God, the Creator of the universe and hence wields a supreme power over all things; "All things were created by Him"; 2) Christ is our Redeemer, He purchased us by His precious Blood, and made us His property and possession; 3) Christ is Head of the Church, "holding in all things the primacy"; 4) God bestowed upon Christ the nations of the world as His special possession and dominion. Today's Mass also describes the qualities of Christ's kingdom. This kingdom is: 1) supreme, extending not only to all people but also to their princes and kings; 2) universal, extending to all nations and to all places; 3) eternal, for "The Lord shall sit a King forever"; 4) spiritual, Christ's "kingdom is not of this world".

POINSETTIAS FOR CHRISTMAS Thank you!
These bright red flowers were known as the 'Flowers of the Holy Night'. The shape of the poinsettia flower and leaves are sometimes thought as a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem which led the Wise Men to Jesus. The red colored leaves symbolize the blood of Christ. Anyone can give
special monetary donation toward the purchase of the flowers for the decoration of the sanctuary for Christmas. Just mark your donations “For flowers at
Christmas”. Anyone wishing to donate the actual flowers for the Church at Christmas can drop them off in the office by noon on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016.
GIVE A GIFT FROM THE CHALICE GIFT CATALOGUE
A perfect way to celebrate Jesus’ birth is to share your inner joy and peace by giving a gift that will make a significant impact for children, families and communities around the world. Our Christmas Gift Catalogue gives our supporters the opportunity to purchase a gift on behalf of family and friends who will receive a beautiful card stating what gift or gifts you bought in their name. Each gift will help a child or family at a Chalice site location. In thanksgiving I wish you God’s joy, light and peace this Christmas time for you and your family. Fr. Patrick Cosgrove – President of Chalice
Please, pick up THE CHALICE GIFT CATALOGUE from the entrance of the church!
Hope in Times of Ethical Dilemmas In Canada today, we face many complex issues related to the ethics of living and dying. These issues raise questions for individuals and society related to suffering, empathy, choice, care, and decision making. How do we, as people of faith, navigate these sensitive issues that push our emotional buttons? Where do we find hope? How do we maintain hope? Join internationally renowned ethicist Margaret Somerville, journalist Peter Stockland, and Archbishop Smith as we explore these important and timely issues on Friday-Saturday, November 25-26, at Providence Renewal Centre (3005-119 Street, Edmonton). Attend all 3 sessions with lunch for $75 0r just one. For more info or to register, call 780-701-1854 or visit www.newman.edu/ethicslectureseries.
MANGER PROJECT Gifts for Jesus
As the Wise Men who brought gifts to baby Jesus to celebrate the birth of our Savior, let us follow their example by filling the manger of gifts in support of mothers bringing life anew, into this world. May God Bless you all in this Advent act of love, as we await with joy the birth of our Lord, Christmas! On November 27/2016, the first Sunday of Advent you will notice in the foyer a manger filled with paper straw. Each straw has an item written on it that is needed to fill 10-12 baby care bags. These bags will be given to new mothers throughout the year 2017. Please feel free to take a straw or straws each week and kindly return your gift of love to be displayed surrounding the manger for the duration of the Advent. After Christmas, these bags will be prayerfully assembled with love and ready for distribution in the coming year.

“THE WAY OF IMPERFECTION” – Fr. André Daigneault
"Is holiness reserved for the virtuous and the perfect? Can the poor, the injured of all kinds, the sinners with their wounds and through their falls, hope to aspire to holiness?" Newly published at the close of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, is an English translation of the book, "The Way of Imperfection", by Fr. André Daigneault.
"The pages of this book will most likely change forever the way you look at holiness. Instead of striving for perfection by our own means and through our willpower, the author introduces us to the way of imperfection; to descend into the heart of one's own poverty to discover God's unconditional love and mercy. God does not love us because we are good, but because He is good." Cardinal Gerald Cyprien Lacroix, Archbishop of Quebec
Copies of this book are available at the parish office. Please contact Karen for more information at 403.845.3457
