In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of

real media products? Our main media products, the digipak, magazine advert and music

video include conventions of the electropop genre. We researched existing digipaks and magazine adverts for both Example, our artist, and other artists included in the genre of electro pop. We tried to gather things common in all of the artists digipak’s, adverts and music videos. One thing we found is that within the electropop culture, bright colours are common and so we decided to use this in all of our products. It is a common convention and we thought it would be good to use it in our products so that people would recognise what type of genre our products are in. Our digipak uses bright paint splats for the background as it sticks with the conventions as stated before. Our advert basically follows the same colour scheme as our digipak

Page 3: Evaluation

As you can see the colour scheme is basically the same with the paint splats covering the titles on both the digipak and the advert. Also the text on both the advert and digipak are the same as Examples real digipak and advert. We tried to stick to as much as we could, Examples digipak and adverts but we gave it a little twist. We challenged the simple, bold text which is on the covers and gave it more colour to add to the electropop conventions yet challenge them and push them

As you can see, the text on examples advert and our advert looks the same; bold and eye catching. His advert for his new album features a picture of his album cover as ours does. Our advert features a manipulated version of our digipak and looks like Examples advert

For our music video we tried to use existing conventions used in various electropop music videos but we mainly focused on taking features from Examples original video for Kickstarts and using them in our own video production. We attempted to take various scenes and idea’s for the existing video and use them such as the idea of split screens throughout the video. I think this turned out great as you can see below

We also tried to stick with the same locations as used in Examples video. Most of the original video is set in a normal house and we tried to use this setting for the main location of our video. Most of our video apart from certain shots which were filmed in a studio, is set in a house

The screen shots on the left are screen grabs of locations in Examples original video and the images on the right are shots of the locations we used in our music video. As you can see they look similar, both set in realistic households to give the feeling of a real life struggling relationship

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Our main digipak and advert come as a package. This is obvious due to the colours and overall appearance of both out advert and digipak. They relate to each other well. The font of the title on the top of our digipak and our advert link, the main actor from our video links to our digipak and advert again as the main male model on our digipak and advert. Even the main actor in our music video is used for our digipak and advert as our main model

Our products appeal to our audience perfectly. We have stuck to the codes and

conventions of our chosen genre which was electro pop. Our product is based on the real

advert, digipak and video for Example’s, “Kickstarts” video, so our product looks familiar

to the original one. The bright colours and bold text will also appeal to the younger

audience as well as real electro pop fans as this is a convention of the genre. Our

product is also quite new, fresh and modern so this again adds to the audience appeal

What have you learnt from your audience research?

To gather information we used the website SurveyMonkey to create a survey based on

the electro pop genre and audience expectations

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YFNMMX5

A team member uploaded the results on the following site

http://i1129.photobucket.com/albums/m519/fran_craddock/questionaire.jpg

Our results showed:- 91.7% showed people liked acting/storyline in a music video more than live footage/performance- 66.7% of people associated electro pop music videos with bright and bold - People expected a music video for an artist such as Example to be held in a club or at a party (83.4%)- For the next question we asked what people liked and disliked about the

Existing album cover for Examples, “Kickstarts” single. Most of the people liked the

Bright colours, the main image of the artist and that it was eye-catching. People

disliked the small song name, Example’s facial expression- For the last question we asked people what they expect to see in an Example

Music video and we found that people suggested quick cuts and bright colours

Page 9: Evaluation

This survey was useful for audience feedback as we could gather all the information

online which allowed us to collect all the data electronically. It also allowed us to collect

as much feedback as we wanted rather than if we used paper surveys or questionnaires

we could only hand out a limited amount. We also found that this survey backed up our

initial ideas which we had after looking at existing products. We found that the audience

agreed mostly with our ideas and so this gave us confidence in our choices

The link above was a second survey our team posted so that we could gather information and

feedback on our finished product

The feedback told us that:

- Our products linked well because of our paint splat theme, the fonts used and the image of our artist

- Our audience told us that the bright colours and quick cuts (split screens) worked well with the chosen genre but the location did not fit well with the genre chose

- The audience could follow the story line easily and the lyrics fitted

- The advert was “plain” at the bottom due to the lack of colour, but this was done on purpose to draw attention to the main heading and subject on the front cover
