How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?EVALUATION QUESTION 2

Assignment brief

The main objective of our coursework was to produce a short film which lasts approximately 5 minutes. The film could have been of any genre ranging from comedy to romantic drama.

After the production we had to create a poster and film review for our short film

From OCR: Production Brief – The task for Unit G324 Advance Portfolio was to

produce a short film in its entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which will be live action, together with two of the following three options:

-A poster for the film-A radio trailer for the film-A film magazine review page featuring the film

What was the objective of your ancillary task?

We were supposed to use our ancillary tasks in order to promote our film using a visual format in the form of a poster and a written text format in the form of a film review

Both tasks were to be attractive for our target audience and it should of related to our final product so that the audience could understand the genre of the short film as well as the general storyline.

I aimed to produce both the poster and the film review to a high standard. In order to achieve this, I used Photoshop for both tasks in order to have the right tools to produce a professional product. I also made sure that the pictures I took was of high quality and not pixelated. In order to achieve this I ensured that I used a high quality camera.

How did my poster meet the drama genre?

The tagline of the posters keywords are ‘GIFT’ and ‘TAKEN AWAY’. These strong words add to the drama of the short film and infers that something bad will happen

The title ‘God’s Gift’ suggests that something good may happen to Jack at some point in the film

Jacks body language seems quite vulnerable; something that can be associated with young people. The way his hands are positioned like he is praying shows the audience that he is a hopeful person and wants something to change; for better or for worse.

The character of Jack has a red snapback and the colour red represents hurt as well as danger. This hurt can connote the genre of the film. Whereas, the danger representation may foreshadow something that may occur in the film

Font choices for my posterFor the title, I used the font named ‘Lithos Pro Regular’. This font was clear and easy to read. It also had a unique look to it. I felt it was appropriate and matched the title of ‘God’s Gift’. The colour scheme of the title was simplistic and matched the colour of the poster.

For the characters names, I used the font ‘Impact Regular’. This font was clear and bold which made it stand out. It matched the genre of the production and gave the name of the actor some sort of importance which connotes the important of the character that he plays.

The credits on my film was used in the normal billing font named ‘Steel Tongs’. This consists of the directors name, actor names and other important roles in the production.

Images used within my film review

This image shows the relationship between a doctor and their patient. It depicts the caring nature of the doctor and vulnerability of Jack as he is scared of the unknown. Both characters have the exact same space in the picture which shows that both characters are of equal importance. When focusing on Doctor Thompkins, she is smiling and releases a sense of comfort that a mother would portray. Whereas, on the hand, Jack is looking at the doctor with a straight face which further reinforces his fear and vulnerability.

This picture is not that dissimilar from the first image. It seems to show Jack in a negative mood. His facial expression shows that he is tired and it clearly shows some sort of confusion. This could show his irresponsibility but this conclusion is not that evident, so it leaves the audience thinking. This may be a reason as to why Jack looks negative as he may of just got the call to go visit the hospital.

Image used within my film posterThis image portrays the character of Jack as:• Hopeful• Vulnerable• Scared• Dependent

Once watching the production, the audiences view of the character changes. In the beginning, they realise that this isn’t the case and that Jack is an irresponsible teenager. However, as the film progresses, the view changes from negative to somewhat sympathetic of Jack. All four of those sides to Jack is shown in the two images of Jack in the film review. Jack is dependent on drugs and alcohol which made him vulnerable to violent drug dealers. After all this, he is still hopeful that his life will one day change for the better. The way his body is portrayed in this image is very similar to that of someone praying. This feature makes people feel sorry for Jack and shows the audience that there is a side to Jack that people may not see at first.

How did my film review explore my final product?

My film review used a colour scheme that I felt followed the colour scheme of my production. The colours that were used had to match the genre, storyline and the general sympathetic feeling that the production revolved around. The quotations from other directors as well as the review magazine itself relate to the production as they use words that would show the audience that this is the film to watch as well what sort of feeling the audience should have for the character of Jack. The general text in the film review mainly talks about the directors inspiration for the film which shows some sort of significance behind the production as well as praise for the director and the actors that played part in the production. The images taken for the film review were taken on set which reflect Jack’s lifestyle.

Colour scheme

The main colours throughout my ancillary tasks are the colours:

Black – This is a strong colour that has the ability to portray many different emotions such as love, hate and anger. However in this production it is used to symbolise the care free and irresponsible nature of Jack as he refuses to accept that his actions are ruining his life.

Red – This colour is also a strong colour that could portray many different emotions. It is mainly used in my film review and is also used a little bit in my poster i.e. the colour of Jacks snapback. Jack is a vulnerable character who has been through a lot in his life which caused him to turn to drugs. This also lead to problems with some dangerous people.

I felt that both these colours were both of equal power which could symbolise many different things. They are also eye catching colours which also relate to the genre of drama.

Summary

In conclusion, I felt that both my film poster and film review were very effective. Both tasks link in terms of colour, representation etc.

Main words used:-Drugs-Gift-IrresponsibilityI feel that these words used in both the ancillary tasks were connoted throughout the five minute production.
