Camera Shots Camera Shots

I feel that the opening sequence for my film does compare to a lot of other thriller conventions, in the camera shots that I have used.As you can see I have compared my film to a well know horror thriller film ‘Scream’, and you can see that they both use medium close ups. A lot of thrillers use close ups and medium shots too build suspense and tension.

I have many of these camera shots in my film as I wanted the audience to feel the tension and suspense in my film just as was made in scream.

Camera AnglesCamera Angles

Again I used similar camera angles to similar horror thriller movies in our open scene. As you can see I have compared it to a similar movie ‘ I know what you did last summer’. I have shown the use of similar camera angles, they are both high angle shots. I used a high angle shot to show vulnerability and weakness in the film. I would like to add that this goes against media convention as the male has been killed off, showing his weakness; but then sticks to normal media conventions as the woman finds his body and screams showing how scared and venerable she is without him. For this scene low key lighting is used to add tension to the scene, as the viewer is un aware of what will happen next.

SoundSound

In my horror thriller movie I feel that the music that was used followed the forms and conventions of other thriller films. I used some music from the music website You Tube, it was especially made for a horror thriller movie and is called ‘ the best horror thriller music’. I feel that after adding music to my opening sequence it has given it a very tense feel and will keep the audience on the edge of their seats as they’re not sure of what will happen next. I feel that this has added a more eerie feel to my film, and without this piece of music, I don’t think it would have made it the film that it is.

Mise en SceneMise en Scene

I wanted the mise en scene in my opening scene to follow forms and conventions of media texts. As you can see I have compared the well known movie ‘Psycho’ to my film, as there are similar aspects in this particular scene. First is lighting, the lighting used in my film and in Psycho is low key lighting as this gives a more dramatic effect. I have also used props in this scene and the prop shown here is a knife, however we do not show any blood on this weapon. Both of these films are set in a house, which is more personal to the viewer, as this can happen to anyone which makes this more scary. The last thing in this scene is spacing, the spacing from between the killer and the victim is pretty close showing the power that the killer has over it’s intended victim.

Narrative Narrative

For my narrative I wanted to make it very stereotypical to normal forms and conventions of media. For example, have a guy and a girl who are a couple, the guy dies and then the girl remains becoming stronger, to rise up against the antagonist. Throughout my film, I feel that I have created a lot of similar effects to most horror thriller movies. Like some horror movies, you're not aware of who the killer is and that’s the idea I was going for. There may be a twist, but you never know until you see the full film, and our opening was just a hint as to what could happen next.

Challenges to the genre Challenges to the genre

I feel that my opening sequence is very stereotypical for a horror thriller film, especially through a dominating male character and a weak and vulnerable female character. However the challenge that is made against the genre in our film is with the male dying, and losing his power, and the female gaining power by building up the confidence to later discover his body. Even though she Is seen as vulnerable still, she is the one that is alive - therefore going against the stereotypical role of male and female. I did this as it gives a twist to the story, as the viewer is not sure whether the woman will get her own back or just run away. This therefore plays around in the viewers head as to what can happen next.
