Evaluation of college magazine
By Sam Hill
How my magazine uses & develops codes & conventions of real magazines• My magazine has most of the codes & conventions of a real magazine included in it.
• Cover page:
• I have included; a masthead, a skyline, a main cover image, a main cover line, more cover lines, a puff, buzz words, barcode, price.
• Contents page:
• I have included; a masthead, a title, 3 column structure, 3 images, image labels, page numbers, regular and feature content.
My magazine compared to a real magazine• My magazine has most of the codes and conventions of a real magazine. Below is
my magazine next to a real edition of ‘Q’ magazine.• My magazine has a masthead, main cover line, cover lines, a puff, buzz words, a
skyline, a main cover image, a barcode & a price.• There are some ways that my magazine doesn’t follow the codes & conventions
of magazines. For example, my magazine doesn’t have many cover lines, the issue information isn’t that detailed, and my masthead and text isn’t as visible as the real magazine.
How I used new media technologies to to create my magazine• The new media technologies I used were:• Photoshop, Quark express & DSLR camera.• I used Photoshop to create my front cover and to edit my final images for my magazine.• I used Quark to create my contents page and to layout a column structure. • I used a DSLR camera to take all the images for my magazine.
Image could be clearer
Here I tried to use all tools I could
Strengths & weaknesses of my magazine• Strengths: mostly visible text and easy to read fonts, well laid out contents page
in column structure, clear images with relevant content, lots of content on contents page.• Weaknesses: Could have more images on contents page, make text on front cover
a different font to make it more readable, add more cover lines on front cover, have a more relevant cover image, text is too big
Masthead could be more visible
Clear column structure
Strengths & weaknesses of my use of new media technologies• Strengths:• Photoshop- had some experience beforehand so it was easy to use and doesn’t take time to learn
how to use all the features.• DSLR camera- easy to use and didn’t take long to learn how to use all the features.• Weaknesses:• Quark- more complicated program took longer to learn how to use it.• DSLR camera- some photos came out blurry and had to be retaken.
Image is slightly blurry
Quark can be quite complicated
