forms and conventions of real media products?

Masthead• Whilst I was designing my music magazine I knew I wanted to create a masthead

which had a rock effect to it, this was essential for me to successfully emulate what my target audience would be expecting from a rock music magazine but to also capture their awareness.

• The following fonts were my potential Masthead designs:

• BOOM• BOOM• BOOM• BOOM• BOOM

I eventually used this Masthead as it looked different and unique to me, I used the Maximus BT font for my masthead and inserted a image of a headphone for one of the letters to make the identity of the magazine more exclusive and distinctive. I manipulated the image using Pageplus and changed the colour of the headphone until I got a purple which I felt would target men primarily but also it could possibly lure in females.

Colour

I chose to use the traditional black and white colours but I wanted to gain a reaction immediately from my front cover so I included a lot of pink which I had originally seen on a magazine by NME which I felt worked really effectively so consequently I used this technique for my own magazine. The colour was striking and I used the typical colours which rock tends to be associated with such as red, black and grey.My masthead challenges the conventions of media products as the masthead is wavy with the wire on the speaker however it does uses the conventions of media products as it has the typical bold effect with the rest of the letters which is appealing and typical of this music genre. It could be compared to NME and KERRANG! My masthead is very focused and the image combined in the text emphasizes the importance of the magazine.

The magazine has a clear ideology of including new artists, it also focuses on

what is becoming new and trendy in the music industry and they focus on which is

just like my own music magazine. My magazine relates to this magazine.

The magazine uses block lettering like my magazine and it uses the typical black, red and white for the masthead design. MOJO also inspired me to make my

magazine unique as it uses different fonts so I used a different font for my slogan to make the masthead more appealing. My masthead could be compared to this music magazine.

It uses the typical black and red colours which is a typical feature so therefore I used this to help me create a brand identity.

Page 5: Evaluation-Q1

I like my masthead not only due to the fact it is unique and lures in the readers it is both conventional and unconventional of a typical music magazine, it combines both of these aspects to develop a product which is effective and more impressive. The features on my product is primarily conventional but the aspects of including typography which isn't always blocked and straight cut makes he identity diverse.

Props• The props I included on the model were:• Heels • Dark Make-up• Hoodie• Dark clothing-eyeliner and eye shadow=dark• CarThe props I used were planned beforehand to make sure I had a clear outlook

on how the magazine would look vaguely but to ensure I had a better outcome with my images and so that I could understand the type of images required for this type of music magazine. This follows the codes and conventions of magazines as I am trying to create a rock music magazine and they tend to use black clothing and it tends to be dark or either really bright, and personally I have achieved this personally.

• The name fusion was made with page plus and I added many effects with the swatches, I think it is both conventional and unconventional as it uses different font sizes and effects to make certain things stand out when most rock magazine use the same fnt and effect for the whole name of the musician. The effects should appeal to my target audience as it has a more optical emphasis and as it has the biggest font size it is bound to lure in readers of my audience, but also the way the text is crafted is edgy but effective in doing so, so it won’t draw people away instead it will do the opposite which is exactly what I have been trying to achieve.

Mise-en-Scene

• The mise-en-scene of my photos use the codes and conventions of music magazine as the use of graffiti in the background of many of my images is conventional but also the location of the park is very useful in this genre of rock and I think it follows as many magazines like NME do this as they use graffiti in their images to present the genre effectively. The setting fits well with the ideology behind my genre and magazine but also the images present a outlook of significance by displaying stern expressions and this can be seen by the direct mode of address which is used in the majority of the images.

Text

The text included on the magazine focuses on rock bands and solo artists and a lot of focus is placed on live gigs and exclusive interviews which has questions to find out about the background history of the musician/s and their experiences etc. All of the text content can be discovered on existing music magazines and so I have followed the conventions as I have introduced a new solo artist on my cover page and the magazine uses a informal and welcoming mode of address which is conventional of music magazines.

Music Genre

The music genre I have chosen is rock and I have used a clear representation of this throughout the production, I have crafted the magazine so that it presents rock features clearly and this can be seen through the images as the props inserted in them. The index on the contents page conveys the genre as all of the artists are of the rock genre and many bands are listed on the front cover of the genre which is clear and sufficient enough to readers to know what genre the music magazine is presenting. The black, pink, white and red font colour emphasizes the masthead name BOOM and it suggests the genre that is being portrayed and therefore the codes and conventions are being developed and followed.

Layout

The layout of the features on the magazine is conventional as the article on the double page spread is in a interview style and the columns are displayed under the stand first and the title is tinted in pink. The front cover uses conventional features and the cover lines are placed in the typical areas of music magazines and the barcode is situated beneath the price line and date which is conventional. The image is sent to the back and the masthead is layered above the image and the main headline placed at the bottom third of the frame but is bold and large.

Contents Page

The contents page uses all the codes and conventions of a music magazine and the band index is conventional as NME uses this. The image is located typically beneath the title ‘contents’ with a short brief of what the image is discussing and this is the double page spread story. The image included is based on the double page spread, the layout of the contents page is effective and easily accessible with the page numbers making it simple to read. It has a effective and uniformed layout.
