Question 6Looking back at your preliminary task, what
do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to your full product?
By George Rapson
My preliminary task was very basic and poor compared to my main task. My preliminary front cover was very empty and basic, it only had one background image and was constructed poorly. It was empty and I didn’t know how to use Photoshop properly at the time which effected my work quality. Looking back it at now I could have improved and included so much more in it.
As you can see down the bottom left of this PowerPoint I have uploaded both my preliminary front cover and my main task front cover. You can see that I have learnt a great amount about Photoshop between the time I finished my preliminary task to when I had finished my main task. My image is fitted into the magazine front cover perfectly whereas my preliminary tasks front cover is distorted and not focused enough. This is down to me not knowing the exact editing tools on Photoshop. You can also see that I haven’t included a barcode and it looks very messy at the bottom with text just going across the page. In my main task the text is grouped together in the correct places so it looks more professional.
I added a border around my main task front cover to make it look more professional and like a magazine. The preliminary task looks more like a document/leaflet, whereas the main task front cover looks like a real magazine cover and has no distorted images.
Overall I think my work on making music magazines has vastly improved from my preliminary task all the way to my main task. I have a better quality of images and text which make the magazine look very professional and realistic. My magazine in my opinion looks very realistic and something you would see in the shops, which was my target.
Another thing I have managed to do well is keeping to a very strict colour code and not breaking any colour boundaries. As you can see at the bottom of this slide, I have kept a green and black colour style with all my text. I have also kept the same style font in my front cover, contents and double page spread. However in my preliminary task I had different colours throughout my magazine which didn’t look professional. You rarely see major magazine brands having loads of different colours throughout their magazine. It doesn’t look right and is very unattractive. My magazine keeps a colour code and that is part of its reputation. When people think of IndieRock magazine they will think of the colour green.
Overall I know that my main task did much more successful than my preliminary task did as I had a set target audience from the beginning and was much more organised with my work. I kept a strict colour code and made sure all my images suited my target audience style and age. It was all based around Indie and Rock music.
