In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge

forms and conventions of real media products?

Evaluation Question 1

Page 2: Evaluation question 1

What have you done to challenge conventions? (consider issues with representations including stereotyping and counter typing, targeting a different audience, putting a twist on genre and/or narrative conventions, institutional contexts)

• Issues such as stereotyping that could be considered in my work would be the ‘indie’ kind of people who are interested in vintage clothing and a reach out to a different kind of lifestyle. • I have targeted a different audience, which challenges conventions as

my audience would be completely different from the mainstream people. I have decided to choose a completely different target audience who are into diverse and unique things in Brighton, who want to get a feel for the city.

Page 3: Evaluation question 1

• The image is very similar, as they have both been taken on Brighton Beach. I have used a different style of photograph as I have captured an intimate moment between two people and therefore the other magazine has just used a photograph showing the people’s style/clothing.

• The colours used in each magazine are a little similar, as they are bright and stand out from the background image. I think that the bright colours make the image interesting and attractive.

• The magazines are similar as they are both about Brighton lifestyle, and based in the same city. I have captured a sense of the atmosphere in Brighton in my products because shooting the front cover photograph on the beach shows that the whole magazine is based in this particular location.

• The are completely different, as I have gone with the vintage style fonts, whereas the WHM magazine is a modernised style of magazine. I have challenged media conventions by using a whole different style of font, going against the modern fonts that magazines tend to use these days. This contrasts as it is a completely different style and gives a brand new feel.

• The photographs both have the same pebbles in the shot. This is unique to Brighton and will show the well known features of the beach off to the rest of the audience.

• I am going to compare and contrast my own production work to existing media products, where I will show how I have based my ideas on real and professional magazines.

• I am going to compare the Brighton On the Beach front cover with another lifestyle magazine, called ‘WHM’ magazine, which is based in Brighton too.

Comparing and contrasting contents pages

• I have compared and contrasted the contents page of my magazine with an existing media product. I have looked the contents page which is featured in ‘Q’ magazine, which displays an overview of the whole magazine.

• There are similar colours that have been used in both products, such as red and blues. The black font stands out which is useful for the audience to see and understand what the text is saying.

• I have used a similar way of presenting the photographs on the page, as they are in a kind of collaged fashion. This is compared to the Q magazine style, as it has a kind of unique and interesting way to present a series of photographs.

• The ‘Q’ magazine has a lot of other conventions such as stickers and headings, in which I have not included in my own work. I think that they work well in the Q contents page because they link to the articles and it gives the page a lot more flair.

• My own contents page has a similar kind of style to it, as there are many pictures which relate to the contents and features.

My double page spread• I am going to look at another magazine

and compare the conventions to my vintage finds double page spread. I have found this NME magazine which is showing an article of a band.

• The magazines are similar as they have a collage of images in which link together. They all relate to each other and look good side by side. I feel that they have a similar colour scheme running though each of the images. I have used more images than the real existing magazine double page spread, as I wanted to focus on the different styles and fashion.

• I have typed a lot of text on the first page of my work, whereas on the NME magazine they have filled the bottom halves of the page with text. I feel that the NME page looks more professional by using the page in this way, setting it out more evenly which makes it look good.

Comparing and contrasting my billboard

• I am comparing my own billboard against this vogue.com one which I have found online. The vogue one looks way more professional than my own product due to the style and the overall appearance in general.

• My billboard is much plainer, as I have gone for a minimalistic style so that it does not over complicate things. The billboards are two completely different styles and they have more contrasting factors more than they have similar ones.

Comparing and contrasting my website to other existing products• The Brighton magazine BN1 is similar to my

product as they are both based in the same location. They are both about lifestyle in Brighton and hove, and offer information about what to do in the city.

• The BN1 website has the same type of photography, the west pier as one of the main photographs on the home page of the website. I have used a similar method by making my west pier photograph as the background image, these websites are similar by using this type of photography.

• I have used a lot of photos on my own website, which compares to the BN1 page. They add interest to the webpage, so that viewers will want to click on the page and find out what is happening in Brighton.
