EVALUATION QUESTION 5How did you attract/address your audience?

FRONT COVER- ATTRACT

When doing my front cover, I had to find a variety of ways to help keep it ‘attractive’ as well as standing out from the crowd. For this, I looked and researched similar magazine to my genre (indie-rock) to help me follow a similar pattern and keep it bold and outputting. From this, I found an NME front cover featuring Lily Allen which helped me to follow a similar layout but not complete. I also looked at a Rolling Stone front cover of Lorde which helped me with subheadings (text style), shapes (lines between each subheading) and the overall image. When I combined the two magazine covers, I created something very contrasting from each individual magazine but a solid indie rock look.

My inspiration (Rolling Stone and NME)

FRONT COVER- ATTRACT

Furthermore, I really feel like I achieved the best potential I could when finalising my front cover and I made sure every detail was put in place to make the overall look more bold and refreshing. The use of a strip at the stop with the colour coordinating “issue 001” was designed to pull out features within the strip such as the “free” posters as well as “special, win Arctic Monkeys tickets” as from my experience, seeing free things is instantly a good thing. As I’m 17, this will appeal to the target audience too as they will benefit from it. Moreover, the yellow helps to grab attention to these areas once again helping to convey this idea. When doing my masthead, I realised it had to be very bold and big to compete against other magazines. For this reason, I created a unique 3D “V” within “Volume” to help portray this as well as using glowing text in a big size font (around 170-180)

CONTENTS PAGE- ADDRESSWhen it came to my contents page, I knew that writing (language) would be a major detail to this as it will contain a variety of information that will have to be interesting with an idea to it. From this, I made headings such as “I’m going solo,” “Killer countdown,” and “Extra Extra!” to try target the audience eyes and make them want to read on and find out more about it. The language which I used in the subheadings also had to seem interesting and not give in too much detail otherwise it would’ve been pointless to add it. The us of personal pronouns “our” also helps the audience to feel as involved as they can as well as feeling comfortable.

When it came to my images, I knew I had to use a range of shots and mise-en-scne to help demonstrate the different styles of indie-rock. From this, I displayed a variety of ideas varying from people to concerts to help show the heart of indie-rock.

Within my regulars, I kept simple headings such as “crossword” and “concert reviews” as they will be added monthly into the magazine. Despite this, my first heading which is “Volume monthly trends” portrays an contrast from this and helps to address what the audience with different trends each month.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD- ADDRESS

Finally, my double page spread was another product to help address the audience to make them feel as comfortable as possible and as involved as they could. From this, I kept the language simple to understand but still suited for 16-25 year olds. By displaying an exclusive interview on how Luna Dawson was founded and before she became famous, I wrote 2 columns talking about her new single “Firestone” by addressing to the audience of new indie-rock music that has been published. I also wrote about her personal life such as her background (where she came from). By having Luna age 18 also helps the audience to feel involved and how she is not different to them making it less patronizing.
