A2 MEDIA EVLAUATIONQ3) WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR AUDIENCE

FEEDBACK

BY STEVEN LAWSON

FEEDBACK • It was important as part of the production to get as much

feedback as possible so I could make improvements on any weaknesses and get critical feedback from the target audience• As well as receiving strengths it was important to focus on the

negatives • I got three types of feedback one of which was class feedback,

individual feedback from friends, family and the target audience such as teenagers aged between 14-18 of both genders for draft 2and 3 feedback and the fourth being final feedback• Class feedback is referred to as draft 1 of which I knew

immediately I had to make improvements on such as adding voice overs

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF DRAFT 1

STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES

GOOD USE OF NATURAL LIGHTING – The natural lighting shining on emily was really good

EDITING ALL THE THREE CHARACTERS WAS GOOD – a well constructed narrative across all three

TITLE – the font needed to change as it was too simplistic and basic

INTRODUCTION – shots in the introduction needed to be shorter as it was too long

THE FRAMING OF SHOTS WAS EXCELLENT – the framing for all the three characters fitted in well and all positioned perfectly

VOICE OVERS – need to add voice overs

VOLUME OF JACK – turn up the volume of Jack as it was too quiet

QUESTIONNAIRE AND SECOND DRAFT• Once I made the improvements on the first draft I started to

hand out questionnaires to gain a wider range of feedback especially the target audience which is both males and females in the age range between 14-18• I then exported the second draft too YouTube making

amendments to my documentary • I created the questionnaire on Wordpress and the questions

were fairly obvious to the individual and easy to understand• Individual feedback mainly focused on the interviews such as

narrative and the use of mise-en-scene and framing.• However there were still admendments to make such as

arguing the introduction was too short and the volume of Jack needed turning up

QUESTIONNAIRE

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSESSTRENGTHS WEAKNESSES

LIKE THE CHANNEL 4 Intro – makes it look conventional

FRAMING – looks well done and professional

SHOTS ARE TOO SHORT FOR INTRODUCTION – make them longer

STYLE FONT STILL TO SIMPLISTIC – need to change the style as it looks to basic and black outline needs to go

BBC ARTICLE – air plane crash – as documents we won't remember the crash therefore need to put headline

NATURAL LIGHTING ON EMILY – shines on her really well

NARRATIVE – The narrative flows well and the use of anecdotes which Emily talks about is fascinating

VOICE OVERS – need to add voice over to channel 4 intro and introduction of characters and music to the channel 4

Draft Three

FEEDBACK ON DRAFT 3• After improving draft 3 it was important in a short space and

time that the amendment I would push me towards finalising my project• Also on of the amendments was using a BBC article • One of the big amendments to make for feedback on my

draft was adding the voice overs in which I tried using Oxford media factory who provided me with samples of voice overs• However most amendments were made and just needed to

make sure the documentary looked as tidy as it could and as professional

WEAKNESSES• One of the weaknesses in draft 3 which I had to change about

was the BBC article. The found you can't read it in a short space of time and need a headline from a website which was quick with a picture of the pilot • From looking at various articles this was an article which I

used but as there was negative critiscm towards it I needed to change it quickly and find one which was suitable • Another weaknesses of the documentary was I need to make

the shots slightly longer as they were too quick so I needed to adjust them to 2+ seconds • The final weakness which I need to actly quickly on was the

voice overs. These were samples used from Oxford media factory and I didn't really want to put them in but in a short spaced of time I had to convince myself. They argued it sounded too robotic and needed to sound more realistic

FINAL DRAFT – draft 4• Due to the limited time left I had to make quick decisions on

my drafts and one of them was to remove the voice overs• As much as I needed voice overs members of the target

audience were not satisfied with the voice over and watching it again and again it was something that needed to be removed• It was also the consistency which was a problem such as it

needed to be a voice over used throughout the documentary such as topics on roles of jobs them talking about social media and the tone of the voice wasn't suitable• LINK:- http://youtu.be/XfGACkGK5F4

IMPROVEMENTS TOWARDS AUDIENCE FEEDBACK

• One of the improvements I could of made towards audience feedback was changing use of media platforms such as social networking sites • As I don't have Facebook, I didn't have the opportunity to

make a Facebook group for my documentary and is one that I should have considered• Facebook would of been a massive contribution towards our

target audience as usually every teenager has a Facebook account and can be easily distributed and shared across teenagers home pages • However I thought using a questionnaire would be simple and

easy for me by handing it out to people in school and friends

FEEDBACK ON ADDITIONAL ANCILLARY TEXTS

NEWSPAPER ADVERTISEMENT

FEEDBACK ON NEWSPAPER ADVERTISEMENT

• The feedback I got on the newspaper advertisement was overall positive • They liked the shot that I used of Emily on the park bench

looking out • Also they liked the brightness of the picture as before on draft

1 it was too unexposed and felt it was dark• Also when comparing other codes and conventions of

newspaper advertisements they agreed that I stood to the right codes and conventions such as placement of channel 4 logo, white text box and black font • They said one weakness that it was a little unclear of the

spotlighting the 1 in 4 as they understood how it represents 1 in 4 but it could have been represented better such as using a group of 4 and making the 1 stand out

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

FEEDBACK ON DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD• On the double page spread I had to create similar to a

newspaper article of what I am trying to promote my documentary especially for channel 4• Again I carried out questionnaires and used emails to send

feedback through and this was done by exporting indesign through either to a PDF file or a JPEG but the JPEG would come as 2 split images• The double page spread received good points but also

criticisms on what I could have done better• I didn't create any drafts for the newspaper adverts and just

did it in one to show members what meaning I was trying to convey

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES

LIKE THE TITE – the target audience liked the title of my double page spread battling the stigma and thought the use of stigma conveyed synergy across all three texts

BLACK AND WHITE – members of the target audience thought the contrast of black and white was good

DISTRIBUTION OF PICTURE – this could have improved and the pictures are too close together and should be more spread out

BLACK LINES – the thickness of the black lines can improve and maybe be thinner

PHOTOS – members of the target audience argued the photos were good such as 'battle of the stigma' and the photo of Emily and Jack with these shots taken when constructing the documentary
