Pastor Nathanael Brenner Worship: Sundays at 9:30am
(262) 302-9324 Bible Class & Sunday School:
[email protected] Sundays at 11am
TODAY’S THEME: This Lenten season we will look back and see Christ in the Old Testament. Since the
beginning of time Christ, who is God, has been undefeated by anything inside and outside this
world. We will look back in time to meditate on the cross and the empty tomb and see that he
is still undefeated. And we will look to the future and trust that he continues to be for us.
Today we see the very first promise of the Savior in the Garden of Eden to Adam and Eve.
Satan, our enemy, will strike the Savior's heel, but the Savior will crush Satan's head.
BEFORE WORSHIP
As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the
service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer:
All-powerful Savior, you loved me so to come into this world and fight for me. You won me
over from Satan to your side. You defeated Satan once and for all. Forgive me for wanting to
go back to sin and Satan. Help me to fight temptation. Amen.

SERVICE OF THE WORD
CHORAL ANTHEM Lenten Meditation Words and music by Jay Althouse © 2001 and this arr. ©2020 Hope Publishing Co., Carol Stream, IL
Jesus Christ, my Savior lived for me, and died.
Source of my salvation, yet was crucified.
Peace that knows no measure: this by faith I see.
Love that knows no ending; Jesus died for me.
Lord, we renew our commitment these forty nights and days.
And Lord, by your grace help us change our sinful ways.
Hear me now, Lord Jesus; I will never stray.
I will never wander. Hear me, as I pray;
Free me now from darkness. Cleanse me now from sin.
Pardon my transgressions. Make me pure within.
Lord, we renew our commitment these forty nights and days.
And Lord, by your grace help us change our sinful ways.
Amen. Amen. Amen.

M: ―This is the one I esteem; he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my

Therefore we confess our sins to the Lord:

have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in
Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love.

(Jeremiah 31:3-4)

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent
death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear
child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
M: Let us pray.
Lord our strength, the battle of good and evil rages within and around us, and our
ancient foe tempts us with his deceits and empty promises. Keep us steadfast in your
Word, and when we fall, raise us up again and restore us through your Son, Jesus
Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now
and forever.

THE WORD
FIRST LESSON GENESIS 3:1-15
The fall into sin through Satan and the promise of a conquering Savior.
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had
made. He said to the woman, ―Did God really say, ‗You must not eat from any tree in the
garden‘?‖ 2
The woman said to the serpent, ―We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3
but
God did say, ‗You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and
you must not touch it, or you will die.‘‖ 4
―You will not surely die,‖ the serpent said to the woman. 5
―For God knows that
when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and
evil.‖ 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the
eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to
her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7
Then the eyes of both of them were opened,
and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for
themselves. 8
Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in
the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the
garden. 9
But the LORD God called to the man, ―Where are you?‖ 10
He answered, ―I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I
hid.‖ 11
And he said, ―Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that
I commanded you not to eat from?‖ 12
The man said, ―The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the
tree, and I ate it.‖ 13
Then the LORD God said to the woman, ―What is this you have done?‖
The woman said, ―The serpent deceived me, and I ate.‖ 14
So the LORD God said to the serpent, ―Because you have done this,
―Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15
And I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.‖

PSALM 130 sung in unison.
We put our hope in the LORD, our undefeated and all-powerful Savior.
Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD;*
O Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive*
to my cry for mercy.
If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins,*
O Lord, who could stand?
But with you there is forgiveness;*
therefore you are feared.
Refrain
I wait for the LORD and in his Word I put my hope.*
My soul waits for the Lord more than
watchmen wait for the morning.
O Israel, put your hope in the LORD,*
for with the LORD is unfailing love
and with him is full redemption.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son*
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,*
is now, and will be forever. Amen.

SECOND LESSON ROMANS 5:12-19
Through Adam’s sin, all were made sinners--through Jesus’ righteous act, all were made
righteous.
12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and
in this way death came to all men, because all sinned— 13
for before the law was given, sin
was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when there is no law. 14
Nevertheless,
death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin
by breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to come. 15
But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one
man, how much more did God‘s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man,
Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! 16
Again, the gift of God is not like the result of the one
man‘s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed
many trespasses and brought justification. 17
For if, by the trespass of the one man, death
reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God‘s abundant
provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus
Christ. 18
Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so
also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. 19
For
just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also
through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
VERSE OF THE DAY It is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” (Matthew 4:10b)

GOSPEL LESSON MATTHEW 4:1-11
Jesus conquers Satan and his temptations. 1
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2
After
fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3
The tempter came to him and said, ―If
you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.‖ 4 Jesus answered, ―It is written: ‗Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word
that comes from the mouth of God.‘‖ 5
Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the
temple. 6
―If you are the Son of God,‖ he said, ―throw yourself down. For it is written:
―‗He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a
stone.‘‖ 7 Jesus answered him, ―It is also written: ‗Do not put the Lord your God to the test.‘‖
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms
of the world and their splendor. 9
―All this I will give you,‖ he said, ―if you will bow down
and worship me.‖ 10
Jesus said to him, ―Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‗Worship the Lord your
God, and serve him only.‘‖ 11
Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
M: Heavenly Father, You loved the world and gave Your Son to liberate us from sin and
death by His obedient death on the cross.
C: We confess that without Your love we are lost.
M: Lord of the Church, we thank You for the treasure of the gospel. By Your Spirit, keep
our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.
Let us pray for those who carry a cross in the name of Christ and face ridicule and
persecution for the sake of the kingdom: missionaries and chaplains, young people who
stand up for what is right in the face of pressure to do what is wrong, and all who pay a
high price for their faith and their values as Christians.
C: By Your Spirit, O Lord, grant them patience and endurance.
M: Let us pray for those who carry heavy burdens in life: the sick and the chronically ill, the
depressed and the lonely, those torn by conflict in personal relationships, those
victimized by war and injustice, and all who face the terrors of life with a heavy heart.
C: Grant them peace, O Lord, and in Your mercy, be their guardian and friend, their
comfort and hope.
M: Let us pray for those who care for others: pastors and counselors; physicians and nurses;
government leaders and law enforcement agents; social workers and caring friends; all
who feed the hungry, comfort the hurting, and stand beside the dying.
C: Strengthen them in their work, O Lord, and do not let them become weary in doing
good.
Special prayers and intercessions may follow.
M: Hear us also, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions.
Silent prayer.
M: Help us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Keep us faithful even to the
point of death, that we may receive the crown of life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C: Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy
will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and
forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us
not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the
power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
