COMING SOON – SPRING BIBLE STUDY OFFERINGS

This January, St. Magdalen’s will be offering two courses from Ascension Press for those interested in

learning more about the Gospel of John, and the Bible.

Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John, by Edward Sri, is an 8 week video study that invites us to experience the joy of a renewed friendship with Christ. Please choose one session for Follow Me, on either Monday mornings after 9:00 am Mass beginning

January 22, 2018, or Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm, beginning January 25, 2018 in the Spiritual Formation Center, downstairs from the Church. Cost of the study is $20.00, which includes the workbook.

Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible is the newest update of the Ascension Press Quick Journey through the Bible with Jeff Cavins. It is an 8 week video study that explains how God reveals Himself to us through Scripture. You will gain a greater appreciation for the Scripture readings we hear during Mass, and for how God’s Word applies to our lives today. Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible will

be held on Sunday evenings beginning January 28, 2018 in the Spiritual Formation Center, downstairs from the Church. Cost of the study is $20.00, which includes the instructional workbook.

Registration for both studies will begin Saturday, January 13, 2018, in the Narthex and online through the

parish website. Checks may be made to St. Magdalen Parish.

Rosemary in the Life of Jesus,

Mary and Joseph

Joseph would have added sprigs of rosemary to the stable’s straw,

to protect infant Jesus from bugs

The purple of Advent and Lent is the color that bookends the life of Jesus. Both holy seasons are penitential, in

preparation for the coming of the Christ: the Incarnation, Resurrection and Return. I like the continuity of a color

that threads its symbolism through our religion. We know by altar linens and chasubles of priests what season we

are in, and what prayers will be said. The purple of penitence and preparation, reds of sacrifice, whites of virtue

and victory and the green of hope and freedom.

There is also symbolism in the plants used in our rituals; the most familiar are the fronds on Palm Sunday (burned

to create the Ashes of Wednesday that mark the start of Lent) and evergreens throughout Advent and Christmas.

And then there’s the purple-flowering herb, rosemary. I’m on a personal mission to be sure this plant is every

Catholic home and parish at Christmas!

Rosemary officinalis was a common and relatively large shrubby herb found throughout the Middle East during

the time of Mary and Joseph. Why is it not mentioned in the Bible? It would be like writing about dish soap —

something functional, necessary and completely irrelevant to The Story.

In those days, rosemary was a utilitarian herb used for maintaining a household. One if it’s many uses was to repel

insects. It would be strewn on the interior floors, and especially incorporated into straw mattresses. Joseph, having

been a bachelor for most of his life, would have known well about adding this herb in his own bedding.

When it came time for Mary to give birth, Joseph probably busied himself by preparing a bed in the manger for the

newborn. More than likely he only had to step a few feet outside the stable to find this bushy herb in Bethlehem.

Snapping off a few tender and fragrant, oily springs, Joseph would have added them to the stable’s straw to protect

the baby Jesus from bugs.

The Holy Family lived as any family would in that century, and the chore of laundering fell to the mother; in this

story that was Mary. Here again rosemary was used. The freshly washed clothing was laid to dry on its branches.

The heat of the sun against the clothing drew the oils into the cloth to freshen and again protect. Throughout Jesus’

life, from childhood and into his ministry, clean clothes carried this fragrance.

In the religious practices of Jews at that time, rosemary was strewn in the tombs of the departed. The holy women

coming after the Sabbath to anoint Jesus’ body would have carried copious amounts of this herb with them, and in

all likelihood thrown it aside when they discovered the risen Christ.

In the language of flowers this herb symbolizes remembrance. What a beautiful plant to have present in our homes

during Christmas. It will help us call to mind the life of Jesus, and his Holy Mother Mary, from the Nativity to the

empty tomb.

I hope you will include in your Christmas decorations a lovely rosemary plant; it enhances not just chicken, but

our whole lives, even the life of the spirit!

Parish Ministries

The Parish would like to thank the Knights of Columbus

for all their hard work on the

Tree Memorialization this year. They had a wonderful response to this

new project and generously donated $4,000.00 to the parish.

The proceeds of this fundraiser will help to refinish the Parish Center gym floors.

We are very grateful to the Knights for organizing this Memorialization

and the generous donation that they gave us.

First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6

Isaiah speaks poetically of the coming of the

Lord. He describes how “darkness covers the

earth” but light and glory appear over God’s chosen people.

Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6

Paul tells the Ephesians that the Jews and

Gentiles are now co-heirs of the promises

God has made. He explains that both groups are now members of one body through Jesus

Christ.

Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12

After Jesus’ birth, three astrologers from the east came to Jerusalem and inquired about

the newborn king of the Jews. King Herod

became greatly angered, and asked the as-

trologers to bring him more information

about the child once they had found him, so

that he too could pay homage to the infant.

However, Herod’s true plan was to kill Jesus. The wise men were warned in a dream not to

return to him and they took a different route

to return home.

Today the Church celebrates the feast of the Epiphany—the manifestation of Jesus as

the Christ or ‘Anointed one of God’ to all the world. The Magi teach us a great deal

about how we ought to approach Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration. First they ap-

proached with faith, recognizing that this was no ordinary child but rather the Son of

God. We too must look upon the consecrated host, not as ordinary bread but as the

hidden God. Secondly they presented the Lord with gifts, the best of what they had to

offer. When we approach the Lord Jesus we must present Him with all that we are

and all that we have—our minds, and our hearts. In this way our Lord will continue to

manifest His presence to us and through us to all the world.

Eucharistic Adoration: What the Magi Teach Us “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all of your heart.”—Jeremiah 29:13

Parish Life Stories at St Magdalen’s “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Matt 25:40

Our Lady of Hope House, located directly behind St. Magdalen’s Parish Center, is a social outreach provided by our parish and run by Sr. Faustina Nguyen a member of the Sisters of Christian Charity community. Hope House has been in existence for more than

12 years, however, many of our parishioners do not even realize that this social ministry exists.

Hope House distributes food, furniture, clothing, and other miscellaneous items. Sr. Faustina describes Hope house as a ministry, which not only provides for the physical but first and foremost the spiritual needs of souls. When someone in need reaches out, Sr. Faustina schedules a meeting, sits down with him or her, listens to their story, and seeks to provide counsel. Sister also

oversees a dedicated group of parishioners who help with the food pantry, staff the office, and sort clothing. She reminds everyone that those who come through the door are Jesus in disguise. Is this a way you possibly see yourself serving Jesus within our community?

Interested in donating food or learning how you can serve at Hope House? Contact Sr. Faustina at (908) 782-2342 or [email protected]

A JOURNEY THROUGH GRIEF Healing Hearts

Bereavement Group Grief is an active, normal process that we must go through to survive our loss. If you are in need of healing after losing a loved one through death and are grieving this loss, you might consider being part of this spiritual based program. The program consists of 8 weekly sessions offering information about the grief process, and gives an opportunity for people to share their thoughts and feelings in an environment of confidentiality, understanding and empathy. The support group is open to all people who are grieving the death of a loved one. The sessions will start Sunday January 7

th and

continue through February 25th. Each session is

held from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm in the Parish Center.

To register or for more information please contact: Joan Purdy at 908-369 - 4841,

LITTLE FLOWERS GIRLS' CLUB The Little Flowers Girls’ Club is a program that provides young girls an opportunity to gather together monthly to learn about their Catholic heritage, faith, and traditions. Girls will learn virtues through the lives of Catholic saints, Scripture, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. A virtue will be completed every month by means of fun activities, crafts, catechesis about the month's virtue, Bible memory verses, games, songs, and snacks that share our monthly theme.

The group is open to girls ages 5 and up. Meetings will be held from 1-3 pm every third Sunday of the month from January-June 2018.

de Herodes era matar a Jesús. Los magos fueron advertidos en un sueño de no regresar con el rey y tomaron una ruta diferente para regresar a casa.
