Patented Thermal-Pak® CoilEVAPCO’s patented Thermal-Pak® condensing coils feature adesign which assures maximum condensing capacity. Theairflow thru the coil is counterflow to the refrigerant flow, providing the most efficient heat transfer. This special coil designis utilized to reduce the air pressure drop through the unit whilemaximizing tube surface area and increasing its heat transfercapabilities. The uniquely shaped tubes of the coil are staggeredin the direction of air flow to obtain a high film coefficient. Inaddition, all tubes are pitched in the direction of refrigerant flow togive good drainage of liquid refrigerant.

The coils are manufactured from high quality steel tubingfollowing the most stringent quality control procedures. Eachcircuit is inspected to assure the material quality and then testedbefore being assemble into a coil. Finally, the assembled coil istested at 400 P.S.I.G. air pressure under water to make sure it isleak free.To protect the coil against corrosion, it is placed in a heavy-dutysteel frame and the entire assembly is dipped in molten zinc (hotdip galvanized) at a temperature of approximately 800°F.

EVAPCO, long known for using premium materials ofconstruction, has developed the ultimate system for corrosionprotection in galvanized steel construction – the EVAPCOATCorrosion Protection System. Marrying corrosion free materialswith heavy gauge mill hot-dip galvanized steel construction toprovide the longest life product with the best value.

G-235 Mill Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel ConstructionMill hot-dip galvanized steel has been successfully used for over25 years for the protection of evaporative condensers againstcorrosion. There are various grades of mill galvanized steel eachwith differing amounts of zinc protection. EVAPCO has been aleader in the industry in developing heavier galvanizing, and wasthe first to standardize on G-235 mill hot-dip galvanized steel.G-235 designation means there is a minimum of 2.35 ounces ofzinc per square foot of surface area as measured in a triple spottest. G-235 is the heaviest level of galvanizing available formanufacturing evaporative condensers and has a minimum of12% more zinc protection than competitive designs using G-210 steel.

During fabrication, all panel edges are coated with a 95% purezinc-rich compound for extended corrosion resistance.

Type 304 Stainless Steel StrainersSubjected to excessive wear and corrosion, the sump strainer iscritical to the successful operation of the condenser. EVAPCOuses only stainless steel for this very important component.

PVC Air Inlet LouversThe innovative design uses corrosion free materials whileeffectively eliminating splash out and reducing the potential foralgae formation inside the condenser.

PVC Drift EliminatorsThe final elements in the upper part of the condenser are moistureeliminators which strip the entrained water droplets from theleaving air stream.

EVAPCO eliminators are constructed entirely of inert, corrosion-free PVC. This PVC material has been specially treated to resistdamaging ultraviolet light. The eliminators are assembled ineasily handled sections to facilitate removal thereby exposing theupper portion of the unit and water distribution system forperiodic inspection.

PVC Water Distribution SystemAnother important part of an evaporative condenser is the waterdistribution system. In order to give the maximum heat transfer andminimize scaling, the coil must be drenched with water at all times. The EVAPCO system does this by circulating approximately 6 gallonsof water per minute over every square foot of coil surface area.

The water distribution system isgreatly simplified in EVAPCO units, with the largest non-clog waterdiffusers available for evaporativecondensers. The diffusers arethreaded into the water distributionheader to ensure correct positioning. Also, a collar on the diffuser extendsinto the header and acts as an anti-sludge ring to reduce the need formaintenance. Excellent flooding ofthe coil is maintained at all timeswithout orifice nozzles.

For corrosion protection the diffusersare made of ABS plastic anddistributor pipes are non-corrosivePolyvinyl Chloride (PVC).

Totally Enclosed MotorsEVAPCO uses totally enclosed motors for all fan and pumpmotors as standard. These superior motors help to assure longerequipment life without motor failures, which result in costlydowntime.

Alternate Materials of ConstructionFor particularly corrosive environments, EVAPCO condensers areavailable with Type 304 Stainless Steel construction for basinsand/or casings. Contact the factory for details on availableoptions.

Induced Draft Design Features

Efficient Drift EliminatorsAn extremely efficient drift eliminator system is standard onEVAPCO condensers. The system removes entrained waterdroplets from the air stream to limit the drift rate to less than0.001% of the recirculating water rate. With a low drift rate, EVAPCO condensers save valuable water andwater treatment chemicals. The condenser can be located in areaswhere minimum water carryover is critical, such as parking lots. The drift eliminators are constructed of an inert polyvinyl chloride(PVC) plastic material which effectively eliminates corrosion ofthese vital components. They are assembled in sections to facilitateeasy removal for inspection of the water distribution system.

Superior Air Inlet Louver and Screen DesignThe air inlet louver screens on the EVAPCO condensers areconstructed of corrosion-free PVC. They are a two pass designthat minimizes splashout and reduces the potential for algaeformation inside the condenser. In single pass louver systems used by other manufacturers, circulating water droplets tend to splashout, especially when thefans are shut off. With the two pass louver system, the waterdroplets are captured on the inward sloping pass, minimizingsplashout problems.

This unique louver design completely encloses the basin area.Direct sunlight is blocked from the water inside the condenser, thereby reducing the potential of algae formation. Water treatmentand maintenance costs are substantially reduced. While effectively containing the recirculating water and blockingsunlight, the louver design has a low pressure drop. The lowpressure drop results in lower fan energy consumption, whichreduces the operating costs of the condenser.

Clean Pan Basin DesignEVAPCO condensers features a completely sloped basin from theupper to lower pan section. This “Clean Pan” design allows thewater to be completely drained from the basin. The condenserwater will drain from the upper section to the depressed lower pansection where the dirt and debris can be easily flushed out throughthe drain. This design helps prevent buildup of sedimentarydeposits, biological films and minimizes standing water.

Stainless Steel BasinEVAPCO condensers have a modular design which allows specificareas to be enhanced for increased corrosion protection. Thebasin area of the condenser experiences turbulent mixing of airand water, in addition to silt build-up. In conjunction with theEVAPCOAT Corrosion Protection System, EVAPCO offers anoptional Stainless Steel Basin. This option provides Type 304 orType 316 stainless steel for the entire basin area including thesupport columns of the condenser and the louver frames. The basin section provides the structural support for the unit andis the most important part of the condenser. The Stainless SteelBasin provides maximum corrosion protection.

Forced Draft Axial Fan Design Features–PMCB Models

Vane Axial Fan AssemblyThe PMCB models utilize two stage, vane axial fans for highlyefficient operation. The fans are installed in a closely fitted cowlwith a venturi inlet and advanced design guide vanes betweenstages, which help direct the flow and increase efficiency.

Cast Aluminum Alloy FansThe fans are heavy-duty cast aluminum alloy that are virtuallycorrosion free.

Vane-Axial Fan

Energy Efficient for Lowest Operating CostCut Operating Horsepower up to 50%The Power-Mizer models use effective axial flow fans which can reduce power requirements by up to 50%. This results in significant energy savings.

Two Stage Fan

11

Internal BafflesAs a standard feature, all Evapco condensers with multiple motorsare provided with an internal baffle system which extends from thepan bottom vertically through the coil bundle. This allows the userto cycle fan motors independently to match system load without theharmful effects of air by-pass.

Power-Band DriveThe Power-Band drive is a solid backed belt system that has highlateral rigidity. This eliminates the problem of mismatched beltsand prevents belts from jumping sheaves, a common problemwith other designs.

PMCB Fan Motor MountEvapco’s tandem TEFC motor mount assembly allows for two fansto be operated with one motor for simplicity. Routine maintenanceis easily performed. If redundancy is a concern, individual fanmotor drives are available as an option on PMCB models.

AccessibilityThe fan section is completely open and accessible at waist levelwhere each part may be carefully checked by simply removing thesafety screens. Bearing grease fittings are extended to the outsideof the unit for ease of lubrication. The basin is also open and easy to access for inspection orcleaning. There is a depressed sump area to catch the dirtaccumulated and it may be easily flushed out with a hose throughthe access door on either end.

Indoor InstallationCentrifugal units may be installed indoors where it is desirable tohide the unit or when this is the only space available. In additionto being quiet, they can handle the external static pressure ofductwork. The units are designed to be easily connected to ductwork.Drawings are available from the factory which illustrate how tomake these ductwork connections.

Centrifugal Fan AssemblyFans on LRC & LSCB condensersare of the forward curved centrifugaldesign with hot-dip galvanized steelconstruction. All fans are staticallyand dynamically balanced and aremounted in a hot-dip galvanizedsteel housing.

Very Quiet OperationCentrifugal fan units operate at lower sound levels which makethis design preferred for installations where noise is a concern. The sound they produce is primarily at high frequencies which iseasily attenuated by building walls, windows, and natural barriers.Additionally, since the sound from the fans is directional, singlesided air entry models can be turned away from critical areasavoiding a sound problem. When even quieter operation isnecessary, centrifugal fan models can be equipped with optionalsound attenuation packages. Consult the factory for details. In addition, the LRC features a specially engineered fan enclosureand drive system that are designed to offer very quiet operationwithout the high cost of external attenuation packages. The newEVAPCO fan system was developed through hundreds of hour oflaboratory tests resulting in the lowest standardized sound levelsavailable in the industry. In fact, the sound level of the LRC onaverage is 2 dBA quieter than competitor’s similar models.

Forced Draft Centrifugal Design Features-–LRC & LSCB Models

Centrifugal Fan

Application VersatilityCentrifugal units are recommended for a wide range of installations. They are quiet, can easily be hidden, and the increase in the fanmotor H.P. over propeller fan units is generally not significant in the small size range. They are also excellent for larger installationswhere very quiet operation is a must, such as residential neighborhoods.

13

Reduced Height and Maintenance AccessibilityThe LRC has been designed to satisfy installation requirementswhere height limits must be observed. The lower profile design ofthe LRC does not, however, sacrifice maintenance accessibility forreduced height. Its unique casing design allows the waterdistribution system, cold water basin, fan section and other unitcomponents to be easily maintained. Small, light weight sections of the drift eliminators can be easilyremoved to access the water distribution system. Large circularaccess doors are located on both sides of the cold water basin toallow adjustment of the float assembly, removal of the stainlesssteel strainers and cleaning of the basin. The fan motor and drivesystem are located at one end of the unit and are completelyaccessible by removing the inlet screens. Although, routinemaintenance can be performed from the exterior of the unitwithout removing the inlet screens.

Low Installed CostsThe compact, unitary design of theLRC evaporative condensersallows them to be shippedcompletely assembled. Thisresults in lower transportationcosts and no assemblyrequirements at the job site. Note:Options such as soundattenuation and discharge hoodswill require additional lifts andsome minor assembly.

Transport of a Pre-Assembled UnitThe LRC ships fully assembled. This means lower transport costsand no further expenses at the job site for assembly. LRCcondensers are idealfor truck-mountedapplications forremote sitesor temporaryinstallations.

Fan Motor MountTEFC fan motors are mounted in a convenient open area for ease of belt tensioning, motor lubrication, and electrical connection. A single adjustment device is provided with a unique lockingmechanism for positive adjustment. A single adjustment device isprovided with a unique locking mechanism for positive adjustment.

AccessibilityThe basin/fan section of a centrifugal fan unit is designed foraccessibility and ease of maintenance. Fan and drive componentsare positioned to allow easy adjustment and cleaning. All greasefittings are in convenient locations for periodic lubrication.Large circular access doors are provided on each section to allowentry into the basin. All float valve and strainer assemblies arelocated near the door for easy adjustment and cleaning. Thebasin sump is designed to catch the dirt accumulated and can beflushed out simply with a hose. In periods of lightened loads or reduced wetbulb temperatures, the fans can operate at low speed, which willprovide about 60% of full speed capacity, yet consume onlyabout 15% of the power compared with high speed. In additionto the energy savings, the sound levels of the units will begreatly reduced at low speed.

Remote Sump ConfigurationFor units operating in areas where temperatures may be verylow, or where low temperatures may occur during periods whenthe unit is not operating, a sump located inside the building is thepreferred means of ensuring that the basin water will not freeze. For these applications, the condenser will be supplied without thespray pump, suction strainers and all associated piping, but withan oversize bottom outlet.

Basin Heater PackageIf a remote sump configuration is not practical, electric basinheater packages are available to help prevent freeze-up of the basinwater. The packages include electric heater elements, and acombination thermostat/low water cutoff.

Electric Water Level ControlEvaporative condensers may be ordered with an electric water levelcontrol in lieu of the standard mechanical float and make-upassembly. This package provides accurate control of water levelsand does not require field adjustment.

Water Level IndicatorCondensers may be supplied with a water level indicator toprovide a visual indication of basin water level without openingaccess doors or air inlet louvers. The level indicator can befurnished with an optional low and high level alarm switches ora transmitter for continuous level monitoring.

Multiple Circuit CoilsCondensers may be supplied with multiple circuit coils to matchvarious system requirements such as split systems, or if a glycolor water circuit is desired for compressor head cooling.

Extended Surface CoilCondensers can be provided with spiral fins on the heatexchanger coil to increase the dry performance of the unit. Dryperformance is accomplished by rejecting heat to theatmosphere without the use of the spray pump and theevaporation process. Dry operation can be practical in coldclimates and/or when reduced winter loads exist. The number offins per inch and and quantity of rows finned can be varied toobtain different dry performances. Dry operation often requiresthe next larger size fan motor. Consult the factory for sizing.

ASME CoilsEvaporative condensers can be furnished with condensing coilsmanufactured in accordance with the ASME Pressure VesselCode Section VIII, Division I. Coils built with this option will beara U-stamp indicating their compliance with the ASME code.

Self Supporting Catwalk and HandrailingEvapco condensers are available with self-supporting catwalk, which may be easily installed in the field. This option offerssignificant savings compared to field constructed catwalks, which must be supported by a structure external to the unit. Thecatwalk may be installed on either side, or the end opposite theconnections. Perimeter handrail is available for PMCB and LSCBmodels, but is not required for ATC or UBC models. Ladders areprovided with the catwalk option.

Jib BoomIn the event that a fan motor should need to be replaced, a jibboom is available from which a chain fall can be mounted toeasily lower the motor to the ground.

Access LaddersAccess ladders are available to provide access for motor, drive, and water distribution system inspection and maintenance.

Stainless Steel BasinATC and UBC condensers are available with an inexpensive allstainless steel basin section. This provides superior corrosionresistance over other materials of construction.

PMCB ModelsWide Blade FansWide blade fans are available for PMCB forced draft units. Thecast aluminum fans operate at lower tip speeds to significantlyreduce sound levels.

LRC & LSCB ModelsCapacity Control Dampers & Pony MotorsIn addition to two speed fan motors, variable frequency drives,(VFD’s), or cycling fan motors on multiple motor units, centrifugalfan condensers have two other types of capacity control optionsavailable to them; Pony motors, and capacity control fan dampers.Pony motors utilize a smaller fan motor in conjunction with theprimary motor for use in times ofreduced loading. This pony motor is typically 1/4 the hp of the primarymotor, and can significantly reduceenergy requirements. Capacity control fan dampers are locateddirectly in the fan housings. They controlhead pressure by modulating the air flowthrough the unit to match the capacity ofthe condenser to the system load.

Sound Attenuation PackageFor extremely noise-sensitive applications, centrifugal fan modelsmay be supplied with intake and/or discharge attenuationpackages which greatly reduce sound levels. Oversize fan motorsare required for this option in order to overcome the additionalstatic pressure.

Solid Bottom PanelsWhen centrifugal fan models are installed indoors and intake air isducted to them, solid bottom panels are required to completelyenclose the fan section. With this option, fan screens are omitted, and bearing lubrication lines are extended to facilitatemaintenance.
