HOLLYWOOD. Robert Hutton, starring in "Love
and Learn," finally has tracked ! down the reason for the myriad l telephone calls he's been getting from teen-age admirers. "The 11-vear-old
| daughter of my butcher,” says Robert, "has been peddling my
j telephone number for 15 cents a
i throw!” The young lady soon can
afford to retire. Jeffrey Lynn, now in New York, is planning a
Bermuda honeymoon with Robin j Chandler to follow their wedding j October 5. Alice Fay has made only three pictures in the past six years, but is still receiving fan mail at the rate of 9,000 letters a
month. No wonder 20th Century- Fox wants her to work again— she s amazingly popular. Victor Mature combines patriotism with economy. He says he’s living in his dressing room at the studio because he does not want to gyp some veteran out of a possible home.
Bette Davis still has that half million dollars left over from the funds of the late Hollywood Can- teen. But she says for me to tell all the veterans who have written her that she wants to spend this sum for the collective benefit of the greatest number of veterans, not for advancing individual loans. I think that eventually she will decide on a factory where disabled

veterans will be able to earn their way in life. And that would be a fine thing. When I mentioned on my radio show that John Payne had a Wisconsin high school girl as his guest-for-the-day on the set of "The Razor's Edge,” I certainly started something. John since has received more than 1,000 requests from fans who want to enjoy a similar experience.

Before Linda Darnell dyes her hair yellow for the role of Amber, she is having small pieces of her black hair cut off and tested in various shades of yellow to see which will “take” the best, and then having wigs made up in the dif- ferent colors. I'm wondering how Linda's hair will stand up to the continuous application of peroxide. It might be better if she wears a wig.
The five-city premiere in Texas for "Duel in the Sun,” David O. Selznick’s mammoth $7,000,000 pro- duction, takes place December 15, in time to catch the Christmas trade—and to win an Academy Award, they hope. And talking of Selznick, his picture, “Little Women,” has been postponed for two weeks because of a possible new strike in Hollywood. And this also may postpone the start of “The Parading Case,” in which Ann Todd plays the wife of Gregory Peck. Gregory plays a titled British law- yer who defends and falls in love with Mrs. Paradine, accused of murdering her husband. This lat- ter role is the only one they wanted Greta Garbo for, and if Gretta had accepted the part it would have been changed to have her merely ac- cused of murder and not, as now, actually committing one.

Bette Davis has postponed the start of her "Ethan Frome" until next year because Henry Fonda, her leading man, is planning to work in a New York play when he finishes "A Time to :Kill.” And when Bette finishes her' picture, "Deception,” she will take a long rest—either at Laguna or in New Hampshire. She's a very tired girl. ... 20th Century-Fox will hold the premiere of "The Razor's Edge” in Parts, and I certainly hope they invite the Hollywood press. I shall start brushing up on my French—!
I just in case. The John Shep- ! pard divorce was just another of those postwar breakups that are now filling the courts.
Cornel Wilde tells me that he is beginning to feel that his wife, Pat
| Knight, an experienced actress in ! her own right, is handicapped in her desire to break into movies because she is married to a movie star. "I thought I could help her,” says Cornel, “but it seems that pro- ducers persist in thinking of her only as my wife and identify her career with mine. But that’s not fair because Pat was a promising actress before I met her." Maybe
