This year´s May issue – in which we are celebrating the pleasure of summer – made me feel excited and nostalgic at the same time. It struck me as we assembled Eveningz monthly jigsaw that such a large portion of the beautiful women we feature are just as self conscious about their shapely bodies as I am; with time we sadly forget to seek the liberation that comes with self-acceptance. In May the UAE belongs to the beach lovers and we the “body obsessed maniacs” have been left behind in kicking off the 2013 beach season with bravura. If fixating on an extra kilo or two kept you from soaking your toes in the cooling sea or from flaunting your summer style, shame…on…you (and me!). Every single woman in the Eveningz office – yes, even the size 2’s - was complaining about the way her body looked. You want to change? More power to you, healthy living is always something we like to applaud but don’t let your weight keep you from frolicking around your favorite beach. The Dubai Summer, although highly unanticipated, is here, which means the days are getting longer...but your skirts are getting much shorter. Read on for ways to get your legs ready for sandy beaches and steamy nights.

1. Soften Your Skin For soft skin, wash your legs with a gentle exfoliating body scrub that has moisturizing oils to prevent dryness and flaking. Spend extra time on scaly knees and ankles. Get rid of any small red bumps on your thighs with a daily dose of 2.5 -3 percent formulae of Lac-Hydrin cream - its lactic acids dissolve prickly patches fast.

2. Go for Bare The best way to shave is with a four-blade razor. It cuts hairs in a single pass so you don’t have to drag the blade over your skin repeatedly. Most of us grab the razor in the shower and get right to work. But it’s better to save shaving for last. The steam softens the hair, so removal is much easier. For the best technique, hold skin taut and shave in the opposite direction of hair growth. Shaving creams with lubricating ingredients, like silicone, oil, and cellulosic gum, can help ward off annoying redness and irritation since they soften the hair and allow the razor to glide right over your skin. An alternative to shaving is waxing your legs. Waxing uproots the hair from the follicle, as opposed to shaving it off at the surface, so it keeps you bare for a few weeks rather than just a few days. Despite your best efforts, ingrowns might still happen - especially if you have coarse, curly hair. Don’t pick at them; just massage the area with a cotton ball soaked in a glycolic and salicylic-acid face cleanser. This sloughs the skin’s top layer, opening the follicle so the hair can pass through.

3. Get a Flawless Finish There’s no magic cure for cellulite, but dermatologists agree that lotions with caffeinated ingredients (like coffee, guarana, and tea) can boost circulation and reduce cellulite temporarily. Another idea: Take a natural-bristle dry body brush and, starting at your ankles, rub upward. This stimulates lymphatic drainage, which may ease puffiness. To camouflage stretch marks, birthmarks, and spider veins dab on a body foundation/concealer. Sally Hansen’s Airbrush Legs and MAC’s Face and Body foundation both work wonders!

4. Make Your Toes Pretty Keep your toes pretty by getting regular pedicures. Clean and polished toes will give your smooth legs that extra oomph.

5. Add Some Shimmer If you want a tanned look quickly, your best bet is a bronzing oil that you can swipe on before going out at night. The effects only stick around until your next shower though. One of the best products to get a celeb like tanned glow in a matter of minutes is Scott Barnes’s Body Bling - available at West L.A. Boutique, Sunset Mall.

For something with more staying power, try a mousse or towelette with sunless tanner: Both stain the legs a beachy, golden tint, and the color lasts about a week. You can choose from multiple hues to match your skin tone, and the products are easier to apply evenly than sprays, which can streak all over the place. Before sweeping yourself with a towelette or mousse, pull on Latex rubber gloves. That way, your hands won’t soak up the color molecules meant for your legs. Just make sure your stems are not damp or greasy from any lotion, which can block the self-tanner from absorbing fully. Spread the product from the tops of your ankles to just below your knees, with uniform swipes in all directions. Next, focus on your thighs, using a mirror to keep your backside in sight. For knees, dilute the tanner with moisturizer to ensure the dry skin there doesn’t turn too dark. You don’t want to look like you’re wearing knee pads. Also, skip spots where the sun doesn’t shine.

A tanned heel or sole is a dead giveaway. If you end up with a few orange smudges, don’t panic. A quick shower should fade them away. If not, add a cup of milk to the bath. The lactic acids should take down the color. If ankles are your only problem, buff away marks with the fine side of an emery board or lighten them up with a bit of cream bleach left on for two to three minutes.

routine. It’s no wonder then that the latest beauty craze for eyes- eyelash extensions- has become such a hit. Who wouldn’t want long, lush lashes without all the fuss and bother of mascara, removers, lash curlers, etc.? Sign us up!

Well, maybe not so fast…with all thefads, it’s best to do research first. Let’s find out if it’s worth it, safe, and convenient. Here are some Q&A’s regarding this eye-deal new process:

Are eyelash extensions safe?Yes! Extensions require no waxing or plucking; medical grade, formaldehyde-free adhesives are used to just adhere eyelash extensions (polyester-based fiber thread materials) to your own lashes. They are applied to your natural eyelashes; you can sport various looks from lush to dramatic, depending on your own personal taste.

What’s the procedure like? The treatment involves a lash extension expert gently taping down your lower lashes (so that your lashes don’t stick together) and using tweezers to apply individual faux lashes (although some are made with real hair) to your actual lashes. It’s a delicate task, performed by a licensed cosmetologist or esthetician. It takes time, maybe 2-3 hours, since the eyelashes (30-80 each eye) are applied by hand. Some people only get the upper lashes done. You need to keep your eyes closed the whole time – which maybe uncomfortable- so the technician can apply fibers directly to the base of your eyelashes on your eyelid.

How long do they last?Normal natural eyelashes fall out every 60-90 days and new lashes grow immediately; the extensions will need touch-ups every 2-3 weeks to fill in the fallen lashes. With routine touch-ups, the extensions can last 1 to 3 months, and then the procedure will have to be done over again.

How will they feel on my eyes?The only negative experiences were from those with sensitive skin or allergies that had some irritation, itching or a burning sensation from the adhesive. Check first with your doctor if you’ve had reactions to products before.

What can I do about wearing makeup, and will water affect them?You can wear water-based mascara and other water-based eye makeup if you choose. You can swim, shower, and use a spa with your extensions. However, avoid all these things in the first 48 hours. And don’t pull on them or use an eyelash curler.

These are originally from Saudi Arabia and are flown in quickly owing to their quick perishability. Last year during the truffle season leading Japanese restaurant Zuma managed to import the biggest truffle, weighing 349g directly from Alba. This truffle, slightly bigger than a normal sized fist, came up to USD 14,000 which is about AED 52,300. Moreover, diners could request truffle shavings on their food for about USD 41 per gram which roughly comes up to about AED 150.

The theme of the event was Vivid Romance and the designs showcased were true to the theme as it brought out flattering cuts and innovative color schemes. The designs were spot on with the Spring Summer theme; the colors

showcased gave a very summer like look and feel, complementing the cut and design in a low key yet chic way. All in all, the variety of designs and cuts on the runway made us anticipate the summer season with a sense of excitement.

With the sun quickly setting on a stunning weekend of action, the pulsating grand finals was a fitting finale to Dubai’s exciting sporting event.Julius Baer team captain and patron, Rashid Al Habtoor was awarded the Julius Baer Beach Polo Cup Dubai 2013 at the official prize giving ceremony.Sam Katiela, said: “The final was a wonderful way to complete a memorable weekend for the return of the ‘Beach Polo Cup’ to the heart of Dubai. We are so proud of how the event went and we hope Dubai thoroughly enjoyed themselves at what was ‘something a little different’ for the events scene here. We could not have asked for a more entertaining final and along with the beach polo there

was so much more for people to experience. Corporate hospitality was abuzz with activity throughout the weekend.”It was a unique take on the traditions of polo and proved to be a winning formula for spectators who flocked to the stunning venue.A charity auction was held prior to the closing ceremony, showcasing modeled replicas of white horses which were built during the 2 day event and painted beautifully by attending children. Rimma Gagloeva is unquestionably and undeniably one of the finest and the most experienced old masters of ex-USSR. Rimma Gagloeva was born and raised in a tribal village. Since childhood she

has been inspired by the colors and hues of nature and parish life. She viewed and absorbed a deliberate and sustained rhythm of village life, with a sort of ritual and poetic verse of work and holidays. The beautiful Ossetian mountains & landscapes have a very deep impact on her personality and the impression has been imprinted on her mind and heart. She grew up with the true beauty of nature which has remained the main subject matter of her work for a lifetime. They are full of evident dynamism and supremacy.

The legendary journey:1940, a real blessing for the artistic world as Rimma was born in 1940 in Tskhinvali and was brought up in Ossetia, a small tribal village. In 1962 she graduated from the Tskhinvali Art School, and in 1967 graduated from the Tashkent State Theatre and Art Institute named after A. N. Ostrovsky. In 1971, Rimma became a member of the Artists Union of USSR. She is also a member of the creative Association of the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan since 1997.

Rimma Gagloeva lives and works in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. She was named “Honored Artist” of Uzbekistan. Rimma is a regular participant in national and international exhibitions, including solo exhibitions in Russia, Ossetia, Bulgaria & Switzerland. She participated in group exhibitions in State Republic Galleries in England, USA and Germany. Her works have been acquired and belong in the collections of the State Museum of Fine Arts of Uzbekistan and in the State Museum – “Tretyakov Painting Gallery” of Russia.

Over the past three eras Gagloeva’s persona of looking and visualizing landscapes and painting them on a canvas has endured fundamental changes. Rimma’s paintings are the reflection of the changes undergone in the relation between man and nature. Nature itself has always been a profound influential element on Gagloeva’s life. Rimma has a completely different perspective when looking and admiring nature’s blessings. For Rimma the mountains are not just a grand assortment of stones, for her it’s a unique outlandish conception of subversive forces, but an inherent & sincere natural habitat. This is why her work often features small tribal villages tagged in the mountains, and human figures in the fields.

Alif Art Gallery prepares for its second Central Asia exhibition since the opening in the end of January 2013, featuring artist Rima Gagloeva for the first time in the region. This exhibition reinforces Alif’s mission to bring more awareness to Central Asian art and culture. The upcoming exhibition will run from 22 April till 22 May 2013. Don’t miss it!

Solo Artist

Shawki Youssef – a Lebanese born imaginative artist with a portfolio of magnificent works of art showcases his artistic investigation of body representation, “Acid Fields” in contemporary art, and acts as an epilogue to his two previous solo shows; “Hollow Flesh” at Agial Gallery, Beirut and “Fluid Being” at Green Art Gallery, Dubai.

His work on both paper and canvas has been much-admired and characterized by his explosive and visceral depictions of the body, often arousing the marred subjects found in Francis Bacon’s paintings. Ethereal limbs, espousal torsos and fiery fragments, are constantly in a state of flux, depicting the heart wrenching illustration of the effects that disease, war, love and lust, obligate on the public. Youssef’s each and every single paintbrush stroke acts as a diary and archive of what it means to be a body living in the Middle East. His anonymous bodies, which are carved out by every single wave of his brush depicts the manifestation of emotional trauma externalized.

In this final installment of work presented in “Acid Fields”, Youssef’s bodies have taken an abstract turn, appearing eerily stagnant and jagged. The fluidity of movement so characteristic of his two previous series appears to have been replaced by the harsher geometry of bone and limb. The violent civil war in Syria, with its reverberations in the entire region, but mostly so in his native homeland, has taken its toll. This absence of a clear and centralized human form not only reflects the artist’s struggle to depict the extent of the emotional repercussions of these growing social wounds, but also creates a map of small spaces, which invite the viewer to trace, decipher, and find meaning alongside him.

Cluster of imaginations

The exhibition presents illustrative review and analysis of fashionable emblematic painting in the works of over twenty artists from nine countries. The theme of the exhibition is inspired by a short story of Isaac Asimov from 1941. Its foundation is a mystical query of what happens to the planet and civilization when there is a solar eclipse and nightfall comes. The main focus that exhibiting artists are adopting, includes social crisis and ambiguity, seclusion and solitude, confusion and isolation of a human being, budding tension between nature and civilization and the internal and external skirmish and continuous struggle with oneself and with society. The apocalypse leitmotif is currently very topical; we can perceive and actually feel the instinctual desires to such thinking as a symptom of changes to the world and the setting of collective thought. It is actually a deep as well as a simple way to convey and to portray the catastrophe within oneself. Every wave and movement of these artist’s brush is depicting a new and deep story. This concept of the exhibition interprets contemporary figurative painting based on a socio-political context.

Art Dubai’s 2013 edition highlighted its importance as a fair of discovery with a diverse roster of 75 galleries from 30 countries, including a curated introduction to varied art scenes across West Africa. Stemming its global significance

through its strong regional foundation, Art Dubai operates as a host for pan-regional exchange and interaction, a key draw for international institutions, curators, and collectors. Of the 500 artists participating this year through exhibiting galleries or Art Dubai’s various programmes, over 50% were from the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia.

Art Dubai further strengthened its credentials as one of the foremost platforms for cultural discussion through the Global Art Forum. Entitled ‘It Means This’, the six-day forum explored ‘definitionism’: with at times standing-room-only presentations by artists such as Michael Stipe, Tarek Atoui, Hassan Khan, Ala Younis, and Manal Al Dowayan; curators Reem Fadda, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Koyo Kouoh; composer and musician André Vida; and Dr Abdulkhaleq Abdulla,professor of political science.

Antonia Carver, Fair Director, Art Dubai, said:“The growth of Art Dubai over the past seven years reflects the rising prominence of the UAE as a centre of art and cultural discourse. We see Art Dubai as a powerful venue for regional and international talents to reach out to new audiences, explore new markets and connect with likeminded collaborators. At the same time, through the Global Art Forum we act as the catalyst for discussions that ripple far beyond the region and extend far beyond the visual arts.”

Art Dubai is held under the benefaction of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who attended the fair and encouraged all the artists for their each and every single stroke. Art Dubai was inaugurated by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. Furthermore, H.H. Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum inaugurated the fair’s Ladies’ Day.

This year was indeed a huge success, as twenty-eight galleries made their debut this year, which are celebrated international names, to name a few: GAGProjects (Adelaide/Berlin), Yvon Lambert (Paris) and Almine Rech Gallery (Paris/Brussels), joining returning favourites such as Sfeir-Semler (Beirut / Hamburg), Alexander Gray Associates (New York), and The Third Line (Dubai). An estimated 45 million USD worth of artworks were exhibited at Art Dubai over the course of the four-day fair. Strong sales – including major procurements by hoarders and visiting museum groups – were reported at Pilar Corrias (London), Nubuke Foundation (Accra), Athr Gallery (Jeddah) Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde (Dubai), and Galerie Rodolphe Janssen (Brussels). Art Dubai 2013 also featured the largest not-for-profit programme till date and marked history, with over 40 artists participating in Art Dubai Projects - including residencies, commissions, performances, screenings, and a mobile art gallery, as well as dXb store, an initiative that supports UAE based designers.

As part of its growing programming, Art Dubai introduced two new elements this year, chief among them Sculpture on the Beach, with signature pieces by Chris Burden and Hassan Sharif. The fair also launched The Sheikha Manal Little Artists Program, reaching out to a new generation of art lovers through discovery tours and activities geared at children and teenagers.This programme is held under the patronage and guidance of Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Women’s Establishment, Wife of HH Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs UAE. Building on this commitment to education, the fair also launched Campus Art Dubai in 2013, in partnership with Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture). Campus Art Dubai runs for 6 months (January-June 2013), offering UAE-based artists and curators monthly Saturday School sessions, culminating in an exhibition in Fall 2013. The programme also includes monthly public seminars.

Nancy Pennikian, a Lebanese beauty with wits indeed. Bubbly in nature and colorful in imagination makes her the UAE’s most happening and jovial lady. Nancy did her BA in Cosmetology and worked as a professional

make-up artist for over 8 years. Thereafter she continued her higher studies and completed her masters in Fashion Marketing at ESMODE Dubai. Since her childhood years Nancy enjoys learning about new trends and creating cozy spaces within her home. She grew up with a taste for decorating and buying unique styles of interior design accessories.

Nancy said,“Designing a home specially the “Living room” is my hobby and I LOVE it....and now I am very enthusiastic to work in this field and I am eager to show the world my taste in designing and making fusionist styled living. Bottom line: Working in the fashion world is my passion and I truly enjoy every bit of it.”Eveningz Team had the chance to chat with charming Nancy to enlighten our readers about the latest trends.

EveningZ: What does “home” mean to you?

Nancy: For me home is “happiness and stability of life.”

EveningZ: What determined your passion for design? Tell us about the moment when you decided this is your way to go?

Nancy: I think it’s in me. When I look at the world I feel like decorating it with my very own ideas. During my childhood I use to decorate my dolls’ house but then as we grow up, sometimes those juvenile passions fade away or should I say they develop a fear of showing up. After I got married, I was very much inspired by my husband’s profession and his world of interiors, and I would say that he is the one who helped me to follow my dreams.

EveningZ: What was your first project?

Nancy: My own house. From the fire to sparks my house is the ultimate perception of my imagination.

EveningZ: What inspires you today?

Nancy: For me, my biggest inspiration is traveling and cultures. I love to travel around and absorb the trends and different lifestyles within my very soul. To see different blessings of nature’s and gathering the ideas from nature itself and then putting them together with my own taste is the way I work.

EveningZ: Which is your favorite travel destination?

Nancy: Unquestionably, it is Paris. Paris is full of love, vintage and elite, classy and fashionable, cultural and historical. It is full of art. For me it’s just Wow.

EveningZ: What would be your recommendation for “what to do first” in a decorating project?

Nancy: Always keep these steps in your mind:

First stepYou need to understand your very inner self. What do you want to achieve? Everybody has their own ideas to make their home ideal and perfect.

Second stepYou need to sit with your designer and let him/her understand your perception and the theme you have.

Third StepYou need to incorporate your ideas with the latest trends. It is not at all necessary to follow the path of trends but it should be the communal thing. You need to understand the latest trends and then think of the way to portray it with your own taste.

Fourth stepLast but not the least; you need to keep the balance in pricing and quality. Don’t fall a prey of wasting money and get nothing. You need keep a balance; it will require a bit effort but trust me it is worth a try.

EveningZ: Do you have any rules?

Nancy: No, I never restrict myself. I don’t limit myself in a certain way.

EveningZ: What are your feelings and thoughts when you are designing?

Nancy: I always think in such a way that the piece that I design is easy to use. I believe in bringing comfort to life. The colors that u like, you should always choose them, though it’s fun to take risks sometimes. Create something with the passion of love blending it with your own taste and the unification of comfort and luxury is very important.

EveningZ: What fashionable trends are in nowadays?

Nancy: In general, the combinations of fabrics like: leather with velvet, leather and cotton.To create a trendy look for your house, the usage of strong colors with soft and subtle flair is a perfect theme you need to follow. A very classical sofa with a very funky table is the new trend.

EveningZ: What colors are now trendy?

Nancy: The monochromes, never forget it. White and black, it always gives a brilliant look to your sitting area. Spring season is all about strong fuchsia, turquoise, folio and flashy colors.

The people of Dubai have a soft corner for small digits – the lower the number on the license plate – the more money is shelled out on it. In many cases, the number plate costs much more than the car itself. For instance, an entry level Mercedes G-class 2012 model in the United Arab Emirates starts at 331,000 AED. However, a two-digit license plate will cost you 250,000 AED. And that is just the starting price! You should probably expect to pay a lot more given the fierce competitive

bidding that takes place for these coveted license plates.

The following are actual Dubai license plate numbers from an auction held by the Roads and Transport Authority of the Government of Dubai (www.rta.ae). The prices next to the number plates up for auction are the reserve prices in Emirati

dirhams (AED) – that’s what the bidding merely starts at. Buyers from Abu Dhabi are credited with 37 of the top 50 most expensive license plates to ever be sold (collectively spending a groundbreaking Dh222.9m). In 2008, license plate No 1 broke the world record as the most expensive, fetching a whopping Dh52.2 million in fierce bidding in neighboring emirate of Abu Dhabi. Saeed Al Khouri, 25, a businessman in Abu Dhabi, won the number plate after a furious contest in the final stages of the auction. He broke the record by paying more than double the previous record which went to plate No 5 that sold for Dh25.2 million and is owned by his cousin Talal Ali Mohammad Khouri, also a prominent businessman.

Is this numbers game about lavish purchases only? It is not. The good that comes from such auctions is that the money generated is used for charitable purposes. For example, the money which came from the purchase of license plate No 1 was used to establish a specialized hospital in Abu Dhabi for accident victims. The Licensing Agency, Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) offered 101 distinguished number plates in its 79th Open Auction spanning a variety of codes including

G, H, I, J, K, L, M and N on Saturday March 16th. The closer the position of the letter is to “A” in the alphabet, the more expensive it tends to be. Mohammed Abdul Karim Nimaat, Director of Vehicles Licensing, RTA Licensing Agency, said: “The Auction encompassed a range of distinguished numbers among the most sought-after by the public in order to meet the expectations of clients who are the backbone of successes made by our past auctions, be it open or online.”

“During the Auction, 101 distinctive licensing numbers were on offer including binary plates such as (N 25), 3-digit plates such as (N 200), 4-digit plates such as (N 3333), and 5-digit plates such as (N 77777),” he explained. The Director of RTA Vehicles Licensing called on individuals interested in taking part in the Auction to register through Deira Licensing Center, Main Customers Service Center, Unified Municipal Services Center at Al Tawar, or online through the RTA portal.

In hotel reviews and industry pamphlets, Dubai’s Burj al Arab is lauded with “seven star” descriptions. The reality is, of course, that no hotel has such a rating. Even the Burj al Arab’s management company describes the hotel

as simply a “five-star deluxe” property. “There’s not a lot we can do to stop it,” says a spokeswoman from the Jumeirah Group. “We’re not encouraging the use of the term. We’ve never used it in our advertising.” According to the group, the seven-star rating emerged when a British journalist who visited the hotel on a pre-opening press trip described the Burj al Arab in her article as above and beyond anything she had ever seen and called it a seven-star hotel. We say she had good reason to do so.

The icon of Dubai, Burj Al Arab rises out of its own man-made island 280 meters from the Jumeirah coast, 15km south of the city and 25km from Dubai International Airport. It is one of the tallest hotels in the world and resembles the sail of a traditional boat called dhow (which acts as a tribute towards the historical reputation of Dubai as a fishing village of the past).Visible from almost everywhere in the city, it is linked to the shore by a slender, gently curving causeway. The hotel’s external lighting schemes, from white light to a multicolored one, change from one to another every 30 minutes expressing the evening’s progress.

It also has a golf riding range and a running track for those looking for some movement. However, what Burj Al Arab is most famous for is the out-door tennis court nested on a platform right by the tip of the hotel. Playing tennis on this platform is guaranteed to give you chills!

How you do it:

Onion Mix: Cut all the ingredients and dip them in water for a short period. Drain all the moisture from the ingredients.

Mix Tsuma :Cut all the ingredients and dip the carrot and cucumber in the water. Keep the tuna aside. Drain all the moisture from the ingredients.

Sauce : Measure and mix all the ingredients.

Steps:1. Set the mixed tsuma onto a plate2. Stack the sliced katsuo nicely on top of the tsuma, leaving some distance between each piece.3. Put the onion mix in the middle of katsuo and sprinkle it with a pinch of shio kombu.4. Sprinkle the sauce mix on top of all the ingredients on the plate.5. Finish the dish by placing each garlic chip on top of the every piece of the katsuo along with the jullien Myoga.
