Event Case Study Summary On January 18, 2014 a diverse group of over 200 coders inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the National Day of Service, gathered in NYC and online to contribute to open source, social impact projects. Event Case StudySummary

On January 18, 2014 a diverse group of over 200 coders inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the National Day of Service, gathered in NYC and online to contribute to open source, social impact projects.

Keynotes by technology leaders Vanessa Hurst, Julie Ann Horvath and John Resig set the tone for collaboration, and more than 50 projects were amplified that day.

Details

● A light breakfast was served, followed by inspiring keynotes to begin the day.

● Teams formed around Social Impact themes and projects on the CodeMontage platform.

● Leaders from Social Impact projects worked directly with developers.

● A Help Desk was formed making sure each participant found a project they were passionate about.

● “Brown Bag lunches from Mom” were served.

● Coding continued into the evening. ● Teams presented their work. ● Celebrated the day with appetizers & drinks.

Results

● 175 people attended in NYC● 40+ coders contributed remotely through the CodeMontage platform● 42% of participants were women coders● 1200+ hours were contributed on projects● 50+ social good organizations received contributions and visibility for their open

source projects

Social Impact Project Highlights● Quill is a web-based tool that provides personalized, interactive grammar

lessons for middle school students. Coders helped improve the experience of students and teachers through several new features and bug fixes. Read the full story of the 18 coders who helped Quill here.

● Kinvolved improves K-12 student attendance and graduation rates by engaging families. At Coder Day, coders built a prototype to help teachers share their best practices about family engagement.

● Aficionado, a Ruby on Rails app with iOS and Android clients, was built from scratch at the Coder Day of Service for users to learn more about works at museums and engage in meaningful dialogue.

● NEMS, a mobile app to locate the nearest non-emergency ambulance service, was built to showcase open data and health services in the NYC community.
