Come and reconnect with heritage

Welcome to the programme for Reconnect: experience heritage.

Co-ordinated by the Christchurch City Council, this one-off heritage event offers an opportunity to revisit the heritage of Christchurch and Banks Peninsula following the region’s earthquakes in 2010/11.

Kick off your weekend of reconnection listening to a range of speakers discuss heritage repair and recovery issues at the New Zealand Historic Places Trust one-day forum. Then take your pick from a host of heritage walks and tours over the following two days.

Have a read through and make up your own itinerary for an exciting and enlightening three days of heritage happenings.

9.30 - 10.00 Heritage and Community in the UC CEISMIC Canterbury Earthquake Digital Archive Paul Miller, Director CEISMIC Canterbury Earthquakes Digital Archive will focus on the different types of heritage being preserved in the UC CEISMIC Canterbury Earthquake Digital Archive.

10.00 – 10.30 Arts Centre Update Chief Executive of The Arts Centre of Christchurch, André Lovatt will discuss the present and future vision for the Arts Centre and lead engineer John Trowsdale (Holmes Consulting Group) will provide an insight into current engineering considerations for the site.

10.30 - 11.00 Morning tea (provided)

11.00 - 11.30 Brendan Smyth and Victoria Bliss will discuss the repairs to their notable Lyttelton home (1876) following substantial damage in the earthquakes. Their two-storey, timber framed carpenter gothic style house, possibly designed by Samuel Farr, was the former home of Peter Cunningham, a prominent Lyttelton figure of the 1880’s.

11.30 – 12.00 ‘The Big Dig’: post-earthquake archaeology in Christchurch. Katharine Watson, Director of Underground Overground Archaeology Ltd will talk about the nature and extent of the archaeological work being carried out in Christchurch & the broader Canterbury region as a result of the earthquake, and some of the stories being uncovered.

12.00 - 12.30 Quake City: Exhibiting the Canterbury earthquakes Sarah Murray, Curator Human History at Canterbury Museum, will speak about the difficulties, delights and subsequent criticisms of collecting and exhibiting the Canterbury earthquakes. The talk will focus, in particular, on Canterbury Museum’s most recent attraction, Quake City.

12.30- 1.30 Lunch break

Afternoon session

1.30 – 2.00 Waimakariri – a microcosm of Canterbury’s post-quake heritage story.

2.00 – 2.30 The Lyttelton Museum building is coming down, you have two days to organise getting stuff out…

Volunteer Firefighter, Lyttelton Museum Society Member, and urban planning lecturer, Roy Montgomery organised the ‘rescue’ of the Lyttelton Museum collection by the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade in the weeks immediately following Feb 22nd. Roy will provide a de-brief on disaster planning for museums from the perspective of a small museum that hadn’t done any disaster planning!

2.30 – 3.00 Post-Quake Akaroa. Steve Lowndes, Chair of the Akaroa Civic Trust will talk about Akaroa, cruise ships and the stabilisation of the French Farm house.

Heritage Christchurch’s iconic 100-year-old Old Government Building set on Cathedral Square was designed by renowned founding city architect, Joseph Clarkson Maddison. The building is described as of ‘monumental importance’ to Christchurch’s architectural history. Having proudly survived a century and seismic events, discover this elegant hotel building’s resilient past and exciting future.

Admission is free (voluntary donation to the Historic Places Aotearoa Trust welcomed), no bookings required, open to public.

Open House: Grubb Cottage

Members of the Grubb Cottage Trust will be on site to provide guided tours of the cottage, which dates from 1851, and discuss the work done to conserve this heritage building.

Archaeology Tour of ‘Watermark,’ Te Papa Ōtākaro/ Avon River Precinct

Cambridge Terrace, Christchurch Tour: 1pm Sat 19 Oct 2013 (40mins duration)

As part of the redevelopment of this area archaeologists worked to record and assess archaeological remains

which were uncovered. As part of the International Day of Archaeology join Nicolas Cable, (Senior archaeologist, OPUS International Consultants Ltd), Joseph Hullen, (Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga) and Amy Findlater, (assistant archaeologist and researcher, New Zealand Historic Places Trust), for a walking tour of ‘Watermark.’

Admission is free, no prior booking needed, open to public, please meet outside the Antigua Boatsheds.

High Street Augmented Reality Tour

Join Zoe Roland from the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and Gun Lee from HitLab (Human Interface Technology Laboratory) on a virtual tour of the pre-earthquake High Street precinct using their newly developed ‘High Street Stories’ augmented reality app.

Talk: St Lukes, Little Akaloa - the Road to Recovery

Speaker Rick Menzies will share his family history and stories about J.H. Menzies who designed and carved the church. Allison Craw, Chair of the Vestry Committee and Peoples’ Warden for the Akaroa/Banks Peninsula Parish will then speak of the process of repairing the earthquake damage to St. Lukes, from fundraising to completion.

Talk: From the Oddfellows to The Gaiety

Location: Presbyterian Hall, Rue Brittan, AkaroaTime: 3pm Sat 19 Oct 2013Members of The Friends of The Gaiety will deliver this talk about Akaroa’s much loved hall. Originally built as a meeting place for the Oddfellows Lodge, The Gaiety has served as a social hub for Akaroa for the past 137 years. Although closed, awaiting earthquake strengthening and repair, it is far from forgotten. The talk will concentrate on its history, from 19th century construction to 21st century renovation.

Talk and Open Day: History of Halswell and St Mary’s Church

The St Mary’s Church Trust invites you to find out about this 1863 church which was originally designed

by Benjamin Mountfort and is one of the oldest Anglican churches in Canterbury.

Open Day: Big School Christ’s College

Even before the first settlers came out to Canterbury on the First Four Ships, back in England James FitzGerald had designed what became known as ‘Big School’ in 1850. Big School is the oldest building in the Christ’s College Quad, as well as the oldest educational building in New Zealand still in

continuous use. It now plays host to the College Library.

Christchurch City Libraries invite you to view an exhibition of Lyttelton’s heritage buildings which will be on display in the form of digital reproductions of Jae Renaut’s original silver gelatine prints. These original photographs were taken between 1980-1981 and represent a mixture of residential and commercial buildings.

Historical Walk: Esplanade/ Marriner Street, Sumner, Christchurch

The Sumner Redcliffs Historical Soc. Inc will lead a walking tour which will begin at Esplanade, and carry on along Marriner Street to Wakefield Ave and back via Mayland Street West to the starting point. Along the way photos and stories of heritage properties demolished due to the earthquakes will be presented, while information on proposed new buildings will be discussed.

Exhibition: Lost Heritage recreated in Fabric

Constructed by Kathleen Burford, a series of quilts are on exhibition at the South Library, based on the encaustic tiles on

the front and side walls of the Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings.

Saturday the 20th of April, 2013 marked a brand new chapter in New Regent Street’s colourful history, as it was officially reopened following the earthquakes. Come and take a walk along this historic street and find out about its wonderful journey from its beginnings to the present day.

Tour: Victoria /Market Square Christchurch Central

Join local historian Dr Geoff Rice and Christchurch City Libraries staff for a historical tour of Market Square (now known at Victoria Square), focussing on some of the buildings, activities and individuals associated with the

square from Christchurch’s early days. Hear stories about some of the interesting characters who lived, worked or died in or around Market Square over the last 160 years.

Open Day: Lyttelton Tennis Club

Find out about the small wooden building on the site of the Lyttelton Tennis Club which is over 90 years old. It has recently undergone renovation and strengthening,

Heritage Quiz: Bailies Bar and Restaurant

Bailies Bar & Restaurant operated out of the Cathedral Square Warners precinct for nearly 30 years. Following demolition due to earthquake damage, owners Lynne and Stan O’Keefe, opened the new Bailies Bar & Restaurant, on the corner of Edgeware Road and Colombo Street. Bailies Bar and Restaurant are pleased to once again be hosting the heritage quiz. Gather your friends and family and come down for an enjoyable evening.

Admission is free, open to public, no prior bookings required, please ensure you bring photo ID as age restrictions/ alcohol restrictions will apply.

Walking Tour: Christchurch City Council Central City Heritage Walk

Meet at Worcester Boulevard entrance to the Civic BuildingTours (approx 1 hour): 10 – 11am, 2-3pm, Sat 19 Oct 2013

Learn about the post-earthquake status of a selection of Council-owned heritage buildings and structures between the Gloucester Street Bridge and the Botanic Gardens on this central city walking tour. Christchurch City Council guides will lead walkers to each heritage site and provide an update, including aspects of the history of each site.

Come and find out about Avebury House, built circa 1885, which has recently been repaired, and partly restored to continue its use as a community meeting

place and function centre. Avebury House is a significant historic landmark in the city’s eastern suburbs. Repair work has now been completed by the Christchurch City Council and the building is earthquake strengthened to 100 percent of the New Building Standard (NBS).

The Canterbury Vintage Home Restorers Group invite you to come and take a tour through three vintage homes which have been restored since the earthquakes to their former

glory. Each house will include a 10-20minute talk on the processes involved in their restoration and their histories, as well as an in depth tour.

Admission is $5 per ticket which will cover entry into all 3 houses, with all proceeds going toward the Canterbury

Earthquake Heritage Buildings Trust, advance bookings are essential (Phone Dianne on 03 359 5056) Tickets will be available (with venue addresses) 14th October, not suitable for wheelchairs or children. Relevant safety information will be given at the start of each house.

Open Studio: Underground Overground Archaeology

What’s the most exciting thing you’ve ever found? That’s what people always ask archaeologists and this is your chance to see some exciting artefacts found in Christchurch. Meet our team of archaeologists and learn more about how we unravel a house’s history, see the remains of the Isaac Theatre Royal horse and learn about being a kid in 19th century Christchurch. Kirk’in o the Tartan Church service: Scottish Heritage Council

St Andrews Church at Rangi Ruru 14 Merivale Lane ChristchurchService: Sun 20 Oct 2013 (Service commences at 1:50pm with a parade of banners into the Church. Afternoon tea is served at the conclusion of the service)

The Heritage Council is holding the annual Kirk’in o the Tartan Church service. The Act of Proscription banned the wearing of any sign of Tartan. The Scottish Highlanders subsequently hid pieces of tartan under their clothing and brought them to church for a secret blessing or kirkin’ at a particular point in the service by the minister. This service invites all present to bring their Tartan to the table and have it blessed.

Orton Bradley Park

Orton Bradley Park is situated in Charteris Bay on the southern side of Lyttelton Harbour, 25km from central Christchurch. The Park consists on a number of Heritage buildings, including a water wheel powered millhouse and

electric generation shed from the 1880’s, a blacksmiths shop, stables, dairy, 1870’s school house, and a stone cottage built in 1848.

Admission is free, open to public, no prior bookings required.

Tours/Open Day: St Paul’s Anglican Church

1 Harwood Rd, Papanui, Christchurch View: 1pm to 3pm Sunday 20 Oct 2013 (with tours at 1:30 & 2:30, duration: 20 mins)

St Paul’s is a unique wooden church built in 1873 and designed by Benjamin Mountfort. It is the only wooden church with a bell tower of eight bells in the South Island.

Having sustained damage during the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes the church building has undergone extensive repairs and is one of the first churches in Christchurch to be restored to its former glory.

Admission is free, open to public, no prior bookings required.

Exhibition: Historic Places Canterbury (HPC), Cathedral Junction: Shop 3

Historic Places Canterbury (HPC) in conjunction with IConIC and Christchurch Civic Trust is staging an exhibition in the newly re-opened Cathedral Junction, which aims to celebrate heritage being saved and restored, spotlight heritage still under threat of demolition and commemorate the huge loss of listed heritage following the earthquakes.

Admission is free, no bookings required, open to public.

Ironside House

Having sustained serious damage in the 2011 February earthquake, Ironside House, built 1889, was reopened late 2012 and now hosts the Harlequin Public House- headed by high-profile chef Jonny Schwass.

The public are invited to come for a drink or dine in the European 1920s-style restaurant and bar, while admiring the historical detailing and architecture Ironside House entails.

Admission is free (food and beverage available at standard menu prices), open to the public, no bookings required for restaurant (except for parties over 8 people).

Exhibition: Sheldon Park 100 Year Anniversary

As part of the Belfast Community’s celebrations, the Belfast Area Residents Association are hosting the Belfast Historical Memorabilia Display - a wonderful exhibition of local history, memories and treasures. Celebrating its 100th year anniversary, Sheldon Park

will also be a large focus of the exhibition. Come along and be a part of the heritage event!

Admission is free (however donations are greatly appreciated), open to public, exhibition will take place in the main picnic area, however, if raining, the Belfast School Hall located next to Sheldon Park.

Tour: Friends of Linwood Cemetery- Cemetery Tour

Location: Linwood Cemetery, Linwood, ChristchurchTime: 10am-12pm Sunday 20 Oct 2013

Join local historian Richard Greenaway for a Tour of Linwood Cemetery. Bring a flask and sandwiches and stay after to talk to Richard or investigate the cemetery on your own.
