TOUR ONEHornsdale Wind Farm/Power Reserve
The Tesla Big Battery has made news globally since even before it was contracted to be installed when Elon Musk promised to fix South Australia’s energy problems in 90 days or it was free. Now an active part of the NEM, the Tesla battery, located at Neoen’s Hornsdale Wind Farm, has the distinction of being the largest lithium battery installation in the world and has already been uses to stabilize frequency on the NEM as a result of coal power station failure.
Given the distance to the Hornsdale wind farm, this will be a full day tour, so be prepared for a long drive through scenic South Australia. Once there, Neoen and Tesla representatives will lead delegates on an in-depth tour of both the wind farm and the battery installation, detailing generation capacity, storage capacity, economics, and the various benefits and applications of an installation of this size.
Please note that food will not be provided, but the tour will stop for lunch.
09:00 - 13:00$75.00 +GST
TOUR TWOAdelaide HS & Tonsley
Peak shaving has become a fiscally viable application for energy storage in South Australia, and Adelaide HS will be the second of four Government owned buildings to receive Battery Energy Storage Systems from SIMEC ZEN Energy for this purpose. This is your opportunity to tour the installation site and energy management system detailing system performance paired with rooftop PV. Tonsley is Australia’s first dedicated innovation precinct, designed and built around the defunct Mitsubishi Main Assembly Building (MAB), with sustainability integrated in all aspects of precinct. Home to a growing number of high tech and innovative companies, as well as TAFE and a Flinders University research facility, the MAB is just the first phase of this revolutionary project. When completed, Tonsley will integrate housing, retail, and the technology sector in a energy efficient community driven by renewable energy.
Please note that food will not be provided, as this is a half day tour.
09:00 - 13:00$75.00 +GST
TOUR THREERedflow & Highbury Pumped Hydro Energy Storage
Flow batteries are truly an Australian product, with critical advancements in this technology coming out of the country. Redflow, a leading supplier of Zinc –Bromine flow batteries powers much of its Adelaide offices through solar and a large-scale ESS. The building just down the street houses the Redflow “battery lab” where the company tests new software solutions through a range of situations and paired inverter technologies. Learn more about this uniquely Australian battery technology and the rigorous testing that takes place before any new software upgrade is released to market.
The next stop will take us North East of Adelaide to the recently announced Highbury Pumped Hydro Energy Storage installation. This unique location, a former quarry in close proximity to a population centre, exemplifies the potential for pumped hydro energy storage in Australia. Tilt Renewables will guide delegates through the project scope and stages, power capacity, and net benefit for Adelaide and South Australian energy consumers.
Please note that food will not be provided, as this is a half day tour.
Adelaide and South Australia are leading the nation in commercial and utility energy storage and sustainability, making AES 2018 the perfect opportunity to explore these installations, learn about the specific use cases and economics, and participate in Q&A with the site owners and technology providers.
Don’t miss this chance to get up close and personal with the technologies and installations leading the way in Australia’s transition to a smarter energy system.
These tours are only available to conference delegates and on a first come first served basis.

FREE WORKSHOPS PROGRAMS
We have a range of free workshops taking place on the exhibitor floor this year at AES 2018, take a look at the timetable below & plan which ones you would like to attend.
WEDNESDAY 23 MAY 2018 THURSDAY 24 MAY 2018
09:30 - 11:30 DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION TOOLS (BIM, GIS AND ENERGY MODELLING TOOLS)This course will take a high-level look into the design tools that are being used in the energy market today. From CAD to power flow modelling, it is important to have the right tool set to do the job. Between the various disciplines of engineering and design often with extremely tight construction programs, those involved in new energy projects need the best tool sets now more than ever.
THIS SESSION IS WORTH 15 CPD POINTS.
12:00 - 13:00 ENERGY STORAGE ON THE GRIDIn this course we will discuss the uptake of energy storage on the grid. The course will look at the standards and guidelines which are being applied to the market, the training needed to install and maintain these systems and some of the safety systems necessary to do an energy storage installation.
THIS SESSION IS WORTH 15 CPD POINTS.
14:00 - 15:30 CYBER SECURITY FOR ENERGY STORAGE (CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE)As increasing amounts of energy storage come on the NEM, it is important to consider the security of these assets. Storage systems use various different software platforms with a huge range in functionality, complexity and quality. This course will look at the risks and mitigation measures needed for energy storage for the sake of both the physical assets and the national security.
THIS SESSION IS WORTH 15 CPD POINTS.
09:30 - 11:00POWER PURCHASE AGREEMENTSPower Purchase Agreements (PPAs) represent a growing segment of the new energy market at the commercial and industrial (C&I) level. This course will look at the risks and opportunities provided by a PPA and examples of how to structure a PPA. The course will also focus on PPAs for projects which include a storage component.
THIS SESSION IS WORTH 15 CPD POINTS.
11:00 - 12:00 SOLARSIM PTY LTD - MODELLING ENERGY STORAGE FOR PV SYSTEMS
In the current day virtually all commercial PV system performance calculations are done with hourly solar radiation data. However, with the inclusion of energy storage in PV systems this may no longer be sufficient. Harry Suehrcke from SolarSim Pty Ltd provides some concrete examples and calculations to show this.
Topics Overview:Overview of Photovoltaic (PV) Systems with Energy StorageSolar Radiation IntermittencyBattery Electric Energy StorageThermal Energy Storage (Hot water)Potential Energy Storage (Pumped hydroelectric storage)
12:00 - 13:30 EMBEDDED NETWORKSEmbedded Networks (EN’s) are an important part of the National Electricity Market (NEM) because they aggregate load and allow more customers to have supply by providing private infrastructure. Over 95% of the EN’s which exist on the NEM have come online in the past five years. This course will look at the risks and benefits of EN’s, the changes in the market to allow for EN’s and the future of EN’s. The course will also focus on how energy storage is an important component of EN’s.
THIS SESSION IS WORTH 15 CPD POINTS.
14:30 - 16:00 ENERGY STORAGE VALUE STREAMSTo unlock the true value of energy storage, systems must be used in a number of different ways. This course looks at all of the value streams that have been associated with energy storage systems. The course will also delve into how storage systems operating in different markets can tap into as many value streams as possible.
THIS SESSION IS WORTH 15 CPD POINTS.
