Locomotive ‘Daylight’ of the Union Pacific Railways

It was not until 1712 that a truly useful steam engine was developed: the atmospheric engine, invented by Thomas Newcomen. Newcomen's engine was relatively inefficient, but did enable water to be pumped out of mine workings at a depth hitherto impossible. James Watt contributed to the development of the steam engine in many ways, vastly improving the efficiency of Newcomen's design and developing mechanisms to convert the reciprocating motion of a piston into rotary motion suitable for driving factory machinery.

Around 1800, Richard Trevithick introduced engines using high-pressure steam. These were much more powerful than previous engines and could be made small enough for transport applications. Thereafter, technological developments and improvements in manufacturing techniques (partly brought about by the adoption of the steam engine as a power source) resulted in the design of more efficient engines that could be smaller, faster, or more powerful, depending on the intended application.

Steam engines remained the dominant source of power well into the 20th century, when advances in the design of electric motors and internal combustion engines gradually resulted in the vast majority of reciprocating steam engines being replaced in commercial usage.

However, in modern times, steam turbines, an alternative form of steam engine, continue to be used in the generation of electricity. And investigations are being made into the practicalities of using reciprocating engines in 'advanced steam technology' systems.

HISTORY FLASH:

The steam machine

Now a day, energy power plants use every

kind of raw material to produce steam, and

later that steam moves a turbine. They are

the same steps in every kind of power plant

,the exception is the photovoltaic plant.

Look that in nearly three hundred years, we

have not advanced in a new way to produce a

big quantity of energy. If something works

well, why has to be changed?

SMART SCOOTER MOTORBIKE

The prototype will appear next International Lounge of Paris, but Mercedes Benz's subsidiary has wanted to launch a small advance of his new electrical motorcycle. The Smart scooter reaches the 45 km/h and it has a futurist and agile design. It is equipped with a battery of 48 V and has an autonomy of 100 kilometres. The time of recharges complete in a conventional plug is five hours. Its chassis is of steel and aluminium redressed in exchangeable panels of plastic. The brake system ABS has a peculiarity: it is activated with the only manacle of existing brake. Whereas the action of stopped of the back wheel is electrical, the hydraulic brake forward is equipped with the system ABS of stopped. This allows that the design is more futurist, on having hidden the back wheel whereas in the forward the flaming disc brake is observed hydraulic. For more safety, besides his system ABS, It has an airbag placed under the manill and an assistant of blind spot. Thanks to an own application, the iPhone turns in a computer of on board multimedia, with a design and

functionality adapted to the Smart Scooter. It has been developed as speedometer, indicator of load of the battery and even system of navigation. In addition they have included the ingenious one functionality, a seeker who allows you to know where you have parked. A few small solar panels arranged in the frontal part of electrical motorcycle allow to recharge the Smart scooter even circulating. Other one of the ways of recharging the batteries is during the stopped one, where the engine acts as generator, allowing to turn the energy of the stopped one in electricity that is stored in the battery of lithium ion.

This is a chance to change the way we live, and may in a future we will use it to move around the city without pollution and a way more sustainable. Our planet dies, and we cannot stop to think; we need solutions, and this is one of them.

NEW AGE OF T-SHIRTS

A Spanish company with the help of the European Space Agency (ESA) has developed a vest capable of measuring certain physiological parameters during the physical activity and to transmit them and to register them in a remote computer.

As explains the director of Emxys, Jose Antonio Carrasco, " most of current systems of monitoring for sportsmen are so little precise and they register so few parameters that most of the athletes continue preferring to note the information with paper and pencil ". Nevertheless, the new article, known as

“I-shirt ", seems that it can change this trend.

The TrainGrid uses a vest equipped with multiple sensors to obtain real time the electrocardiogram of the athlete, the cardiac pulse, the temperature of the skin, the position of the body and his location thanks to the sign of navigation for satellite incorporated. This information comes to a computer that allows to monitor and to register them later to realize an analysis detailed of the same ones them.

The system controls possible raises or falls of pace, calculates the speed and the results of the exercise, sending all the information of an automatic way across Bluetooth to a computer or even a mobile phone, which allows to share them with the trainer or even in social networks.

Intelligent vest with medical applications

As the own Carrasco explains, “We launch this product to the market in June, 2010 and already it is being used by many athletes ". But evidently the possibilities do not limit themselves to the sportsmen of high performance. “Now we are exploring new applications of this technology, as the workers' monitoring in remote locations or during dangerous activities as the extinction of fires or in labors of rescue" Jose Antonio Carrasco assures.

The intelligent vest I- shirt has been developed by Emxys in the center of incubation of companies in Noordwijk, Netherlands, inside the Program of Technological Transfer of the Space European Agency.

THE MOBILE

REVOLUTION:

MOZILLA SEABIRD

There was a time where the world was Microsoft. Most people were acceding to the Network across their navigate Internet Explorer. “Integrated with the operating system Windows, it had swept to the competence, the Netscape Navigator. Now it seems obvious, but in 1998 nobody believed that this piece of software was important, when it is the principal door to enter to the Web ", remembers Mitchell Barker, chairwoman of the Mozilla Foundation.

Since Mozilla Labs launched the Concept

Series with an open call for

participation we’ve had thousands of people join in, share ideas and develop concepts around Firefox, the

Mozilla projects and the Open Web as a whole.

In response to our open call Billy May, in early 2009, produced a

throw-away concept for an “Open Web Concept Phone”.

Working directly off of that community feedback, Billy has since

finished the exploration with his concept “Seabird”.

The Seabird, then, introduces a few possibilities into how user

interaction might evolve with the advancing motion capture and

projector driven innovation in the market. First out, the Seabird

imagines how a multiple use dongle might augment the

crowded gestural interface with greater precision and direct manipulation of content in 3D space.

The form development took its cues from various aerodynamic, avian and decidedly feminine forms. Its

erect posture intends a sense of poise while its supine conformity to the hand reconciles that with the

user’s desire for digital control. The curvature of the back also serves a functional role in elevating the

projector lens elements when lying flat.

Synthetic senses for robots

American scientists have developed a new technology to make “electronic skin", that is to say, an artificial covering that simulates the human tact and which application will multiply the functions of the robots and will contribute to creation of a new generation of prothesis, according to the magazine

Nature Materials. Whereas the sight and the voice are very advanced in robotics, the sense of the tact still is very rudimentary. Nevertheless, the independent tests realized by two equipments of American investigators, one directed by Ali Javey, University of California, and other one supervised by Zhenan Bao, of Princeton's University, might change soon the situation thanks to a thin compound sheet of nanostrip of silicon and cover of small sensors of the size of a pixel, whom his authors have baptized like and e-skin.

The new electronic skin will be capable of detecting changes of temperature and pressure, so much weigh anchor like intense, since only he needs five volts to be driven. The investigators hope that the invention allows that the robots of the future should be capable of handling objects with more precision, as well as to use the material in revolutionary prothesis bionics. Between the possible applications of it and e-skin also offers fight as an electronic carpet that might recognize the fingerprints of the inhabitants of the house, or a seat of covered car that should determine the physical conditions of the driver.

PASSIVE SAFETY SYSTEMS

The cars have many security systems that want to reduce the number of accidents and the damage that the eventful ones suffer. These security systems divide in two, the safety systems it activates and passive. The liabilities minimize the damage to the occupants and pedestrians once an accident has taken been produced, whereas the assets try to achieve that the accident does not take place.

The safety systems most used are the airbag, the safety belt and even the chairs of the babies, but the innovation and the technology invent new security system that reduce the damage when a traffic accident takes place. The passive security systems serve to avoid serious or mortal injuries in the occupants of the vehicle as soon as the accident could not have been avoided.

Safety belt

Last year they were fulfilled 50 years of the use of the safety belt, the more widespread method of passive security and, for example in our country, absolutely obligatorily. Exactly on August 13, 1959, it was going out to the sale to the Volvo PV544 that was incorporating for the first time the safety belt of three points of anchorage. Since then, thousands of persons have saved the life in traffic accidents. As they explain from the DGT, “the safety belt reduces 45 % the deaths for accident.

The belt started being in use in the fifties and since then has not it changed at all his form and his technology? The truth is that not. For the proper design of the cars it is difficult to create another type of safety belts with a fourth point of anchorage, since it happens in the cars of competition. The improvement would be notable, so the body, during a collision, the move would be much less, reducing the probabilities of which the driver or his passengers were suffering injuries.

Airbag

The airbag is different of the fundamental elements in the security to the steering wheel. These bags hidden under the hub caps of the car (dashboard, steering wheel, door, etc.) they have saved the life to many persons. When an accident takes place, concerning milliseconds be filled to muffle the blows that the occupants of the cockpit can suffer. It was in use for the first time in 1981 and since then, the trend in the car industry has been to increase the number of airbags for vehicle, adding the passenger's airbag, wings, etc.

NINTENDO 3DS: 3D REVOLUTION

Nintendo changed the world of video games with touch-screen gaming on the Nintendo DS in 2004. Nintendo then pioneered the motion-controlled gaming revolution with the Wii console and the Wii Remote controller back in 2006. Today the company unveils an even more immersive gaming experience: Nintendo 3DS.

At the E3 Expo today, Nintendo gave the world the first look at a portable system that lets people view games in 3D, without the need for special glasses. The additional dimension of depth in 3D makes it easier for players to judge distances while giving developers a new tool to create games and experiences that play with both height and depth. Nintendo 3DS comes with a 3.53-inch top screen and a 3.02-inch bottom touch screen. It has three cameras - one inner and two outer - to deliver the 3D effect and take 3D pictures. It includes a motion sensor, a gyro sensor and even a Slide Pad that allows 360-degree analog input. At the E3 Expo, Nintendo showed attendees a range of games and applications for Nintendo 3DS that reinvent some of the industry's most beloved franchises. Nintendo is also talking up partnerships including Disney, games that are said to be playable today, at the show, with one of the highlights being a new Kid Icarus game which looks quite action-packed to say the least -- and has better graphics than most of the Wii titles Nintendo has shown thus far. Nintendo has mentioned the 3DS will have the "biggest launch support ever" from third party devs.

MAGNETIC LEVITATION TRAIN

If you've been to an airport lately, you've probably noticed that air travel is becoming more and more congested. Despite frequent delays, airplanes still provide the fastest way to travel hundreds or thousands of miles. Passenger air travel revolutionized the transportation industry in the last century, letting people traverse great distances in a matter of hours instead of days or weeks.

The only alternatives to airplanes -- feet, cars, buses,

boats and conventional trains -- are just too slow for today's fast-paced society. However, there is a new form of transportation that could revolutionize transportation of the 21st century the way airplanes did in the 20th century.

A few countries are using powerful electromagnets to develop high-speed trains, called maglev trains. Maglev is short for magnetic levitation, which means that these trains will float over a guideway using the basic principles of

magnets to replace the old steel wheel and track trains. In this article, you will learn how electromagnetic propulsion works, how three specific types of maglev trains work and where you can ride one of these trains.

The big difference between a maglev train and a conventional train is that maglev trains do not have an engine, at least, not the kind of engine used to pull typical train cars along steel tracks. The engine for maglev trains is rather inconspicuous.

maglev trains do not have an engine, at least, not the kind of engine used to pull typical train cars along steel tracks. The engine for maglev trains is rather inconspicuous. Instead of using fossil fuels, the magnetic field created by the electrified coils in the guideway walls and the track combines to propel the train.

HOW MAGLEV WORKS?

In electrodynamic suspension

(EDS), both the rail and the

train exert a magnetic field,

and the train is levitated by

the repulsive force between

these magnetic fields. The

magnetic field in the train is

produced by either

electromagnets (as in JR-

Maglev) or by an array of

permanent magnets (as

in Inductrack). The repulsive

force in the track is created by

an induced magnetic field in

wires or other conducting

strips in the track. A major

advantage of the repulsive

maglev systems is that they

are naturally stable,

minor narrowing in distance

between the track and the

magnets creates strong forces

to repel the magnets back to

their original position, while a

slight increase in distance

greatly reduces the force and

again returns the vehicle to

the right separation. No

feedback control is needed.

A manned mission to Mars has been the subject of science fiction, engineering, and scientific proposals

throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century. The plans comprise proposals not only to land on,

but eventually also settle the planetMars, its moons, Phobos & Deimos and terraform the planet.

Preliminary work for missions has been undertaken since the 1950s, with planned missions typically taking

place 10 to 30 years in the future. The list of manned Mars mission plans in the 20th century shows the

various mission proposals that have been put forth by multiple organizations and space agencies in this

field of space exploration.

In 2004 the U.S. administration announced a new Vision for Space Exploration naming a manned Mars

mission as one of its milestones. No concrete plan has been decided upon, and the proposal is currently

being discussed between politicians, scientists, space advocates and in the public. In 2010, a new bill was

signed allowing for a manned Mars mission by the 2030s.

MarsDrive mission design (2008)

The MarsDrive Organization has been working at a series of new human mission designs starting with Mars

for Less. Their current design program under Director of Engineering Ron Cordes has discarded many of the

Mars for Less elements and is a work in progress as of June 2008. Some of their design philosophy is

focused on using current or near term existing launch vehicle systems, permanent human settlement,

conceptual EDL systems and enhanced surface ISRU. Their proposed methods of funding the mission are

also an alternative to the current plans with a private consortium approach being investigated.

ESA plans

Another proposal for a joint ESA mission with Russia is based on two spacecraft being sent to Mars, one

carrying a six-person crew and the other the expedition's supplies. The mission would take about 440 days

to complete with three astronauts visiting the surface of the planet for a period of two months. The entire

project would cost $20 billion and Russia would contribute 30% of these funds.

Chinese Mars exploration program

Main article: Chinese Mars exploration program

Little is known of the Chinese Mars exploration program. While the Moon is the first priority, there are

plans for Martian exploration that follow upon the work done in the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program.

China has been studying the necessity and feasibility of Mars exploration since early 1990s as part of the

national "863 Planetary Exploration" project, according to Liu Zhenxing, a researcher from the CAS Center

for Space Science and Applied Research (CSSAR).

ELECTRIC CAR CHARGER

General Electric (GE) has presented a new loader for electrical vehicles baptized as GE WattStation. The innovative system has the principal virtue of reducing the time for the overloads and the use of technology smart grid (electrical intelligent network), allowing to the companies suppliers to manage the impact of the electrical vehicles in the local and regional networks. The creator of this system has been the industrial designer Yves Behar

The widespread adoption of the electrical car depends on the availability of stations of load that satisfy the need of power to realize you overload rapid and the personal need of that the functioning is simple. GE WattStation will obtain this lens has explained during the presentation Steve Fludder, vice-president of GE ecomagination.

GE WattStation combines functionality with simplicity. The new loader, taking as reference overloads her completes of a battery of 24 kWh, obtains an average reduction of the time of load of 12-18 hours up to only 4-8 hours compared with a standard load of Level 1.

Innovator advances

On the other hand, the president and managing director of General Electric Energy Services, Dan Heintzelman, has made clear that “during more than 100 years, GE has worked to optimize the use of the energy. Given our experience and knowledge in electrical distribution, WattStation is a natural advance in our commitment to create innovation advanced for the next century ".

GE WattStation will be available commercial in the whole world in 2011. GE will announce the specific one of the loader for the homes at the end of this year.

DUBAI WORLD

On 2 July 2006, it was launched as a holding company with more than 50,000 employees in over 100 cities around the globe. The group now has extensive real estate investments in the United States, the United Kingdom and South Africa. Dubai World made headlines in March 2008 after its chairman, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, threatened to take the fund's money out of Europe. Dubai World's threats came shortly after the European Union attempted to lay out "a set of principles for transparency, predictability and accountability" for sovereign wealth funds.

Dubai World is an investment company that manages and supervises a portfolio of businesses and projects for the Dubai government across a wide range of industry segments and projects that promote Dubai as a hub for commerce and trading. It is the emirate's flag bearer in global investments and has a central role in the direction of Dubai's economy. Assets include DP World which caused a storm when trying to take over six US ports, and Nakheel, its property arm, which built The Palm Islands and The World developments, and Istithmar World, its investment company. It is chaired by Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem.

Dubai World was established under a decree ratified on 2 March 2006 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai. He also holds the majority stake in Dubai World.

On November 26, 2009, Dubai World proposed to delay repayment of its debt, which raised the risk of the largest government default since the Argentine debt restructuring in 2001. Dubai World, the investment vehicle for the emirate, asked to delay for six months payment on $26 billion of debt. The extent of the debt rattled many markets causing many indices to drop; including oil prices. U.S. stocks fell sharply but rebounded from their lows as investors concluded that the damage might be contained. The Dow Jones industrial average lost about 155 points, or roughly 1.5 percent, in a shortened trading day, and other stock averages also sank. Oil prices plunged as much as 7 percent before recovering some ground later in the day.

On May 20, 2010 Dubai World said that it had reached an agreement "in principle" with most of its bank lenders

to restructure debt worth $23.5bn (£16.4bn). It would be left with debts of $14.4bn after the restructuring. But

the deal must still be approved by other banks that were not involved in the negotiations. The terms of the

restructuring, include converting $8.9bn of government debt into equity. The government of Dubai and Dubai

World had tabled this offer to bank lenders in March 2010 after three months of negotiations.
