There is an expectation by the community that sustainability will be taken into consideration by event organisers. Make sure you have read the “Event waste management guidelines” first. There are lots of suggestions and information to help with this plan. Streams of waste collection in the PMHC area include; • General waste• Recycling (comingled)• Organics (food and garden waste)• Earn and Return (Reverse Vending Machines in various locations)
Large food events MUST provide general waste, recycling and manned food organics waste bins.

This is an exercise designed to assist with recognising what waste will be generated, it is not necessary to list absolutely every stall on site as long as all stall holders are aware of the guidelines.

Formula: 1 meal = 1 litre rubbish 1,000 people * 2 meals = 2,000 litres estimated waste Divide 2,000 by 240 litres (a standard bin) = 8 bins = 4 bin stations of 1 waste and 1 recycle bin each

**Note: public place bins are not permitted to be used for your event or for post event waste disposal - this is to ensure there is room in the bins for the public to use once you bump out. Make sure you place event bins next to / in front of the permanent public bins.

Monitor waste bins, swap locations if can see its needed or add more bins to certain locations, swap full ones out for empties
Relevant waste wise announcements by MC
Monitor waste and recycling bin content qualities during day. I.e. check what is being put into the recycling bin so you can see if it is contaminated with non-recycles. Your waste contractor will not recycle your recyclables if contamination is above xyz%
Monitor back of house during event i.e. are stalls using the recycling/ compost bins as they should be
Monitor the back of house as stallholders begin to pack up
Begin to clean up and collect unused bins. Bins that are recycling or compost and are clean from contamination and full should be taped closed or put behind the red bins so that those cleaning up don’t put rubbish in them
Conduct verbal surveys of stallholders during clean up and attendees as you wander the site
