held by Historic Environment Scotland and other

historic attractions celebrating 5000 years of Scottish

Introduction Welcome to our thirteenth bulletin packed with exciting historical events for the

autumn and winter 2017. This bulletin is organised by West of Scotland Regional

Equality Council (WSREC) who is funded by Historic Environment Scotland

(formerly known as Historic Scotland) until March 2020. The main aim of the project

is to raise awareness of Scotland’s historic environment to all communities in

particular minority communities who have settled in Scotland over the last few

years.

This bulletin includes details of open events that are running throughout Scotland in

the spring and summer months which will mark the celebration of people and places

telling the story of a nation with over 5000 years of history. So join us in retracing

the footsteps of various historic figures bringing the past to life at castles, palaces

Holyrood Holiday Club: Autumn Adventure Holyrood Park Join the Rangers to discover the secrets of autumn. Forage for autumn fruit and turn it into jam over a traditionally lit fire, learn some of the folklore associated with autumn crop and get creative with environmental art. An Audience with Mary, Queen of Scots Edinburgh Castle It is 1566 and Mary, Queen of Scots has given birth to James, heir to the Scottish throne. Amid great rejoicing, the Queen will be holding an audience in the Great Hall. This is your opportunity to congratulate her and find out what life is like at her court here in Edinburgh Castle. The Linlithgow ExFEARience Linlithgow Palace As night falls, come to the palace as we get ready for Halloween. Tour the dark corridors of the palace, hear tales from the past and meet some unexpected characters along the way. (£10.80 Adult Member. £12.00 Adult Non-Member. Booking essential. Call 0131 668 8885 to book.) Save the Galloway Hoard National Museum of Scotland The Galloway Hoard is an extraordinary find of Viking-age gold, silver and jewelled treasures. It's the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland. It brings together over 100 gold, silver and other items from across Ireland, the Anglo-Saxon world, the Holy Roman Empire, Byzantium and beyond, hinting at previously unknown connections between people across Europe and further afield. Trebuchets and Trickery Edinburgh Castle In March 1314, the forces of King Robert the Bruce captured Edinburgh Castle. Meet the commander, Thomas Randolph and hear how he used guile and local knowledge to capture this almost impregnable fortress. Learn of the weapons and equipment in use and find out what Bruce did to the castle afterwards. (Included in admission cost. Free for members.) Down to Earth National Museum of Scotland Around 13:15 on 3 December 1917 scores of people, from Northumberland to Aberdeenshire, saw an unusually bright, fiery mass streaking through the sky. A loud explosion was heard and four fragments fell to earth between Coupar Angus and Blairgowrie in Strathmore. Three landed in fields and one crashed through the roof of a cottage. These four pieces were all recovered and collectively became known as the Strathmore Meteorite. Celebrating the centenary of the Strathmore Meteorite, Down to Earth reunites the four fragments for the first time, along with pieces of the three other meteorites found on Scottish soil. (Free.)

Georgian Scotland - Crime and Punishment Edinburgh Castle Thomas Turlis, the Hangman, recounts the nature of his profession; in which he hangs, flogs, brands, and mutilates, in accordance with the law. He takes you to the Georgian times when there were in excess of 200 offences for which you could be hanged. It was the time of the 'Bloody Code', where the minimum age for capital punishment was as low as 7! (Included in admission cost. Free for members.) Winter Public Astronomy Evening Royal Observatory, Edinburgh At the Winter Public Astronomy Evenings, whenever possible, we use our 8" and 10" Meade telescopes to observe the night skies, seeking out the most interesting objects, from planets to nebulae. Our team will also lead you through a naked-eye guide to the night sky, so you can find your way around the main constellations. At each event, you will also have a tour of our historic Victorian telescope dome, which still houses one of the largest telescopes in Scotland. Here you will also hear about what happens at the Observatory today. Also included in every event is a meteorite handling session - a chance to hold a rock from space! Burrell at Kelvingrove: Tapestries Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum During his lifetime Sir William Burrell (1861—1958) collected over 200 tapestries. The collection, regarded as internationally significant , include majestic French and South Netherlandish tapestries commissioned by kings, princes and bishops as well as smaller tapestrieswoven in Germany and Englandfor the emerging merchant classes. Many adorned the walls of Sir William Burrell’s homes, whilst others were lent to exhibitions, museums and cathedrals throughout Britain. This exhibition showcases nine works from the 14—17 centuries, including two works from the Glasgow International Exhibition, 1901, at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. (Free.)

WSREC

West of Scotland Regional Equality Council work in the West of Scotland to promote equal opportunities for minority ethnic communities. Our projects include working with youth groups tackling religiously motivated crime, Central and Eastern European migrants advice and support, working with young Roma communities. WSREC also support community planning partners and other organisations who are trying to bridge the gaps in service provision. We have a number of volunteers with our project and also co-ordinate volunteers through a set project which aims to build capacity for individuals. For more information log
