OSVALDS ZVEJSALNIEKS’ EXHIBITION "LATGALE. LITHUANIA"22.03.-22.04., 11:00-18:00 (II-VI)Osvalds Zvejsalnieks is one of the most renowned figures in Latvia’s cultural and social life and an artist who has been following and advancing the classical tradition in Latvian painting. Landscapes and scenes of Latgale’s small towns like Ludza, Krāslava, Dagda, Viļāni and Balvi, among others, are the dominant motifs of his paintings. Most probably this choice of themes has been inspired by the artist’s childhood memories and his life in Latgale, and perhaps this also explains the coloristic qualities and sincerity of Zvejsalnieks’ paintings.Gallery Daugava, Alksnāja Street

Contemporary Art Center’s program Institutional Residence, which was launched in 2016, the solo exhibition of Finnish artist Maija Luutonen, from the Helsinki Sic space of contemporary art, will be held in Riga. Considering the surface as something transient, Luutonen addresses the relation between time and movement; treating the works as moving images – only that they shift too slow for the human eye or lifetime. Her practice often narrates around spatial immersion, our relation to built environment, nature and all its scales.kim? Contemporary Art Centre

According to Catholic traditions of Latgale, a cross is the place of reflection where one looks up, removing any hat in reverence to God. People called divine service in May as "dzīduošana pi krusta" (singing at the cross) and held it at their own in-itiative. OPERA "TANNHÄUSER"23.,24.05., 10.,15.06., 18:00In Richard Wagner’s masterpiece, Tannhäuser draws his artistic inspiration from experiencing polar opposites: the pleasure he experiences in an underground grotto, and the asceticism he experiences on his pilgrimage to Rome. He also loves women who are polar opposites to one another, and searches for a way to combine these two opposites to form a unified whole: Tannhäuser wants the sensual Venus to have Elisabeth’s chastity, whereas he wants the chaste Elisabeth to have Venus’s sensuousness. Stage Director Vilppu Kiljunen tells about his pro-duction: My approach to the staging was built around a central question: the conditions that make love and loving possible in a cultural context, where the idea and role of a woman is violently divided into that of a saint or a whore.Latvian National Opera and Ballet

BALLET "RAYMONDA"28.05., 19:00This work by genius Marius Petipa represents the artist’s rebirth in the twilight of his life. The Master created "Raymonda" at the age of 80 as the quintessence of his rich life. The plot is about a knight who embarks on a crusade and his bride. Dances by Raymonda and her friends appear as an accolade to female beauty and the multicoloured gamut of her feelings, while the entrance of sheikh Abdu-Rakhman and his suite brings Oriental inebriation and passion to the ballet, briefly stirring up the admirable harmony of Raymonda’s world. LNO production transports the viewers into the wondrous atmosphere of the Middle Ages.Latvian National Opera and Ballet
BALLET "BOLERO"31.05., 19:00French composer Maurice Ravel once joked: I have written a masterpiece. Unfor-tunately, there is no music in it.Latvian National Opera and Ballet
A CONCERT PERFORMANCE "NOVECENTO"31.05., 19:00The same world-famous Italian author and philosopher Alessandro Baricco (1958) who studies glass castles, silk and Homer, during his early years has much though about music and even wrote books about it. Baricco is erudite, rather provocative and even a bit quarrelsome. He loves tangled ideas and always tries to purify the objects that he is studying from trivial assumptions.Spikeri Concert Hall
