SEAN KELLY & JULIE KELLEHER

It’s hard to believe that five months have already passed since we took over the leadership of this beautiful and storied theatre. Serving the Everyman and its audiences is a unique honour and we are very proud to present our first full season of shows to you.

Highlights include theatre treasure Simon Callow in top form with The Man Jesus (for one night only!), Des Bishop’s Coming Home with tales of learning to do stand up in Chinese, and a visit from our national theatre as John B. Keane’s Sive gets the Abbey Theatre treatment.

The month of September will see a fascinating array of plays either dealing directly with or inspired by true events – Between Trees and Water, an offsite performance by Painted Bird Productions, The Laramie Project, which features some of Cork’s most ambitious young performers, and the chilling tale of What Happened Bridgie Cleary? by Bottom Dog Theatre. We’re particularly thrilled to welcome Actors Touring Company (UK) with David Greig’s daring play The Events (The Guardian’s Best Play of 2013), during which four Cork based choirs will share the stage with this top class company.

This autumn programme proudly wears its Cork credentials on it sleeves, showcasing the work of Cork’s excellent theatremakers and musicians.

Highlights include the much-loved Pakie O’Callaghan and Frank Twomey in Farewell to Santa Ponsa, Majella Cullagh in Love Really, Karen Underwood in Of Ladies Lost and Found and Linda Kenny in perennial favourite The Everyman Sunday Songbook.

There’s much much more besides, including music, comedy, family shows, even more theatre, the best Morecambe and Wise show you’re ever likely to see, the Jazz Festival, and family favourite – the Christmas Panto, as CADA and the Everyman sprinkle fairy dust over the magical tale of Cinderella!

We hope you’ll join us for a moment of joy, fun or inspiration during this coming season. In their last brochure, our predecessors described the Everyman as “a unique and priceless gem”. We couldn’t agree more. Here’s to the future!

The 'Live' Last WaltzBack by popular demand, the spectacular, live, re-enactment of the music from Martin Scorsese's documentary, The ‘Live’ Last Waltz with ten piece band, full brass section and all the special guests, returns for one night only.

The Last Waltz was a live performance, filmed and directed by Martin Scorsese which commemorates the history and music of Bob Dylan and The Band and is regarded as the greatest rock and roll concert movie of all time.

It started as a concert - it became a celebration and then one of the best loved music films of all time, but of course it was the guest list on the night that turned it into the greatest gig of all time as Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Dr John, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Ronnie Hawkins and a host of others joined The Band on stage.

The Rape of Lucretia

MUSIC

‘The pity is that sin has so much grace, it moves like virtue’

In this opera of devastating beauty a state of perpetual war exists. Terror has a grip on the land. Justice has been put on

hold, truth blurred and only the strong prevail.

This bold updating of Britten’s chamber masterwork will showcase the best of emerging Irish singing talent in a daring staging of this

searing tale of civic corruption, sexual desire and the abuse of power.

Laramie, Wyoming, USA, a small town which became infamous overnight in October 1998. A young man is

abducted, tied to a fence, tortured and brutally beaten. Was it for his shoes and wallet or something more than that? This

is the scandal that shocked America and the world. The young man was left to die and this play follows his tragic story and the

debate about hate crimes that followed.

The play draws on hundreds of interviews with inhabitants of the town, journal entries from the writers and published news reports.

This production features some of Cork’s finest young theatre talents, all former students at the Wolfe Stage School, who have shown huge

commitment and ambition in bringing this excoriating piece of theatre to life.

What Happened Bridgie Cleary'I never knew anyone that wasn’t someway prisoner'

In 1895, Tipperary woman Bridget Cleary was burnt to death by her husband. His defence? She was a fairy, replaced by a changeling. Her crime? Being a sensual independent woman who didn't conform to what was expected of her.

What Happened Bridgie Cleary is a poetic and dramatic interpretation of this Munster story. Starring Joanne Ryan (Ros na Rún) who was nominated this year for an Irish Times Theatre Award for her portrayal of Bridgie, alongside well-known actors Myles Breen and Pius McGrath.

Of Ladies Lost and Found

Karen Underwood brings you a fabulous night of diva entertainment!

Of Ladies Lost and Found is a night in concert with the divas that left us too soon, the women whom enjoyed excesses and

excellence. The women we cried and made love to, listening to them sing a story of love and pain. If you love music come out and

enjoy a great night of music from Janice Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Billie Holiday, Whitney Houston and more. They may no longer be

with us but their music lingers in our hearts!

Brought to you by Chicago Diva Karen Underwood and arranged, directed and accompanied by John O'Brien.

But he also can't wait to tell you about all the things he missed about home: democracy, milk, sarcasm and so much more. Sive‘Isn’t it only bringing two people together in wedlock we are?’

One of the greatest Irish plays of the 20th century, John B. Keane’s Sive stands tall in the Irish theatre canon.

This gripping new production by director Conall Morrison was enjoyed by over 30,000 people during a sell-out run at the Abbey Theatre. Now Sive returns for a major All Ireland tour.

Beautiful young Sive lives with her aunt and uncle in rural Kerry. Seán Dóta, an elderly farmer, offers the local match-maker Thomasheen Seán Rua, a large sum for her hand in marriage. Will this be too much for her aunt and uncle to resist?

Don’t miss this chance to rediscover this dark, powerful story of greed and passion.

The Girl Who Forgot to Sing Badly

Sometimes it takes a girl-sized human to solve an adult-sized problem.

Peggy O’Hegarty and her parents are packers. They squeeze fruit into tins, foxes into boxes, even bikes into brown paper bags. And all

the while Peggy sings with the voice of an angel – a grossly unfortunate angel, who can’t sing at all.

Ingenious performer Louis Lovett leads the audience on an untamed adventure that crosses snowy lands and wild seas. As Peggy desperately

tries to save the day, we learn about love, loss, the reassurance of goats, and the courage to sing gloriously on or off-key.

Faust

fri 20, Sat 21, Tue 24, fri 27 & Sat 28 feb | 7.30pm

The Everyman and Cork Operatic Society join forces once again to present a new and daring production of Charles Gounod's Faust.

Premiered in Paris in 1859, it is perhaps the most famous operatic treatment of Goethe's tragedy. Weary of life and the pursuit of knowledge, the aged Faust contemplates suicide. Méphistophélès promises to satisfy all of his hedonistic demands in exchange for his soul.

With its rich melodic score and darkly seductive storyline Faust promises to capture the imagination with its spectacular staging and deeply dramatic performances.

Betty Brosnan Front-of-House Volunteer

As the current Friday ‘Senior’ (a position that rotates) I co-ordinate the Friday crew. I check beforehand to ensure we have enough volunteers and if not, I put out an appeal for helpers. On the night, I assign duties, ensuring adequate cover and keep a written record of every show which I sign off on at the end of a night. Each night has its own team but we all co-operate and willingly help each other out when required.

Favourite thing about working at the EverymanI love everything about it, from the minute I don the black ‘uniform’ until the usual end-of-night question ‘What’s in next week?’ I love the buzz of being busy. But the best thing about working here is meeting people. All the people - volunteers, staff, public and I always love meeting the audiences. It being a social occasion, I meet people at their best, people are out to enjoy themselves, so are in good form. Over the years I’ve met many different people and now know the ‘regulars’ likely to attend a particular show.

Then of course, there is the drama! I joined the Everyman because I love theatre and had made a New Year resolution to go to a play once a month. Now I get to enjoy the best of theatre on a weekly basis. That in itself is its own reward. I’m constantly honing my critical skills. At the same time I’m learning and appreciating more and more about theatre and performing.

What I do…I am one of a large number of Front-of-House volunteers at The Everyman. As a member of the Friday night team, I deal directly with the public, under the direction of the Front of House managers, Pat and Sharon. Our task as Front of House staff is to ensure that audiences have an enjoyable theatrical experience. Our duties include greeting audience members, checking admission tickets, ushering audience to seats, selling programmes and ice cream and running the shop. In addition, we maintain a presence in the auditorium during performances to ensure that nothing, e.g. mobile phones / flash photography etc. interrupts the show. Most importantly, we are all trained in fire procedure and closely monitor the emergency exits.

Best momentsThere are many great moments, like when someone comes up thanking me at the end of a show or seeing the wonder on the faces of the children attending the panto. However, my best moment is a personal one - working alongside my son, Barry, when he joined the technical crew at The Everyman. A ‘proud momma’ moment. And, we get to have interesting discussions on the merit of a show as seen from different aspects.

Favourite showThis is hard! So many shows are clamouring for mention : ‘The Year of Magical Thinking’ by Joan Didion, with Gerry McLoughlin, Neil LaBute’s ‘Wrecks’ featuring Ed Harris, Pat Kinevane’s one man masterpiece ‘Forgotten’, and of course the ever popular ‘Tom Crean’ play. However, the one show that really stands out for me is last year’s ‘Orpheus’. This show had everything - costumes, music and dancing. It was visually gorgeous, musically enchanting and altogether just beautiful. Thanks to this wonderful production by The Everyman and Cork Operatic Society, I’ve become an opera lover.
