Three-Step Exam Process

Step 1 Log on to take and pass the exam. ■■ For college-level (licensing) courses approved by the California Bureau of

Real Estate (BRE), the minimum completion time allowed by the BRE is 18 days per course. For example, if you enroll for three courses, the quickest you

CA_Licensing_Course_Syllabus_3E.indb 2 2/24/2017 1:42:32 PM

3Support Information

could complete your final exams would be 54 days from the date you paid (18 days multiplied by 3 courses equals a total of 54 days).

■■ Using the access information in the Kaplan email you received when you enrolled, log on to the Kaplan Learn website www.kaplanlearn.com/login.

■■ From your homepage, select the link for the exam you are taking (see Figure 1.1: Homepage).

■■ Once the program opens, choose the launch button to start the exam. ■■ While you take the exam you may check questions for review. However, you

will not be able to review them until all questions have been answered. ■■ Once the exam is submitted, your results appear, and if you pass, you will not

be able to access the exam again except to review your results. — If you do not score 60% or higher, you may retake the exam until you

achieve a passing score, but you must wait an additional 18 days between attempts.

— You must pass all course exams to receive the required course completion certificate.

— Completely review the course material before attempting to retake the exam.

— For most exams, the exam questions are randomly generated from a question bank, so you may see some new questions each time you test.

— If you fail an exam more than three times, please discuss this with a classroom instructor, attend an interactive study group, or send an email to [email protected] and ask to have an instructor contact you.

FIGURE 1.1: Homepage

Step 2 Accept your affidavit. ■■ Once you have passed the exam, the icon for the affidavit will then activate.

— You are required to accept the affidavit that states you have completed each assigned module of the course.

— You will need to complete this step before your course can be finalized. Once you click on the icon and accept it, you may move to the next step.

Step 3 View and print your course completion certificate. ■■ The course completion certificate can be viewed and printed once all of the

required components show checkmarks (see Figure 1.2: Dashboard).

4 Everything You Need to Complete Your Prelicensing Course-California Syllabus

— If the checkmark does not appear or if any of the icons are gray, you have not completed the course.

— Once the certificate icon is no longer grayed out, click it to view and print your completion certificate.

— You will need to print each of the three required course certificates to take with you to the state license exam and to submit with your license application.

SCORE REQUIREMENTS TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR COMPLETING EACH CLASS

Each class has a final exam and, in some cases, a midterm exam or quizzes that must be passed, with a score of 60% or higher, to complete the course. If you do not pass the online quizzes or exams, please follow the online instructions to review and to retake them.

Note: To pass exam prep, you should take and review the pre-test and post-test, but the course does not count toward your grade. While the course is not required, we find the student’s ability to pass the exam prep course is predictive of them also passing the license exam.

ONDEMAND STUDY STUDENT STUDY GUIDE AND SCHEDULE

The required pre-reading schedule is listed in Figure 2.2.

We have found that OnDemand students who set a regular class schedule do bet-ter than those who don’t. Typically, using a schedule of completing at least three units per week works best for most of our nonclassroom students; at a minimum, you should try to complete two units per week. When beginning a unit, read the corresponding chapter or unit for the textbook listed, then log on and complete the video for the unit, filling in the workbook. Upon completing the video, most units have homework, either an end-of-unit quiz or a glossary review or both, that should be completed before proceeding to the next unit.

Note: The schedule that follows can also be used to track the completion of each course, quiz, and exam.

HOME STUDY STUDENT STUDY GUIDE AND SCHEDULE

The suggested reading schedule is listed in Figure 2.3.

We have found that home study students who set a regular schedule do better than those who don’t. Typically, using a schedule of completing at least three units per week works best for most of our nonclassroom students; at a minimum, you should try to complete two units per week. For each unit, read the corresponding chapter or unit for the textbook that is listed. Once you have completed the reading, take the online quiz or exam as noted in the schedule.

Note: The schedule that follows can also be used to track the completion of each course, quiz, and exam.

HOW TO SIGN UP FOR THE CALIFORNIA LICENSE EXAM

The California Real Estate Salesperson and Broker Licensing Exams are adminis-tered by the California Bureau of Real Estate.

When Can I Schedule My Exam?

The California Bureau of Real Estate requires candidates to first successfully complete their licensing education before submitting a license application and scheduling to take the actual licensing exam. Once you successfully complete the required courses with a passing final exam score of 60% or higher, we will provide you with a Certificate of Completion, which will allow you to certify to CalBRE that you have successfully completed your education. You will then be able to apply to CalBRE to schedule an exam date. CalBRE offers salesperson and broker exam scheduling based on the volume of applications received. The examination availability is subject to the seating capacity of the facility and the demand for the testing site.

Application Process and Exam Fees

Salesperson The fee to take the exam is $60, which must be paid in advance when you submit your application in order to schedule your exam date. We recom-mend completing a combined salesperson examination and license application, getting fingerprinted, and submitting all fees in order to expedite your application process with CalBRE. The total fees would be $305: $60 for the exam, and $245 for the licensing fee.

Broker The fee to take the exam is $95, which must be paid in advance when you submit your application in order to schedule your exam date. We recommend completing a combined broker examination and license application, getting fin-gerprinted, and submitting all fees in order to expedite your application process

CA_Licensing_Course_Syllabus_3E.indb 13 2/24/2017 1:42:47 PM

with CalBRE. The total fees would be $395: $95 for the exam, and $300 for the licensing fee.

Mail Application Currently, CalBRE only accepts paper applications. You may submit your completed application and fees by mailing them to the California Bureau of Real Estate, P.O. Box 137001, Sacramento, CA 95813-7001.

Scheduling Your Exam

Once your application has been processed, approved, and qualified by CalBRE, CalBRE will schedule your exam date, or you will be able to schedule it yourself through the eLicensing online system.

Scheduled by CalBRE If you would like the earliest possible examination date, indicate on the licensing application multiple dates and exam location pref-erences (you can attach a separate page to your licensing application detailing this information). You will then be scheduled by CalBRE for the earliest available date in the area you have chosen and will be mailed an Examination Schedule Notice.

Self-Schedule If you indicate on the licensing application that you want to schedule the examination, a letter will be sent to you advising you that you are now qualified, and that you may schedule your examination through the eLicens-ing online system.

What Does the Exam Look Like?

Salesperson Exam CalBRE salesperson examination consists of 150 multiple choice questions. You have 3 hours and 15 minutes to complete the examination. You must score 70% or better.

Broker Exam CalBRE broker examination consists of 200 multiple choice ques-tions. This examination is divided into a morning and afternoon session. There are 100 multiple choice questions in the morning session of the exam, and 100 multiple choice questions in the afternoon session of the exam. You will be given 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete each session. You must score 75% or better.

The exams are administered on a standard personal computer in all testing loca-tions. You will have access to a standard four-function calculator and will not be permitted to bring your own.

Is It Possible to Reschedule the Exam?

To reschedule your exam, you may apply for another examination date by using the eLicensing online system to expedite processing or by completing, signing, and returning the Examination Schedule Notice with the appropriate fee by mail to: California Bureau of Real Estate, Examination Section, P.O. Box 137001, Sac-ramento, CA 95813-7001.

Note: You may only be scheduled for one exam at a time. Since CalBRE allows reschedule requests by phone, online, and through the mail, examination dates can fill quickly, and a particular date may not be available; therefore, requests can-not be guaranteed.
