Introduction• 81% of eligible people aged 15+ living with HIV have accessed

lifesaving HIV treatment in FS

• Free State province, continues to achieve dramatic results in the

AIDS response – lives saved and new infections averted.

• The number of children newly infected declined from 4 110 in 2004

to 540 in 2012 .

• The FS HIV/AIDS Spectrum Model results, showed an increase in

prevalence( 15-49) from 18.80% in 2004, to 19.57% in 2012.

• Infection levels are highly variable between districts & by gender.

Free State Province

Geographic background

Free State is the 2nd smallest province, neighbouring Lesotho and 6 of 8 provinces in South Africa. • Population:

o It is estimated at 2.9 million, DHIS 2013/14 Midyear estimates.

o 2,745,590: Census 2011• It is comprised of five districts (viz. Xhariep,

Mangaung Metro, Lejweleputswa, Thabo Mofutsanyane and Fezile Dabi).

• All the districts are crowded by squatter camps,

Conclusion

• Tackling the crisis of HIV and AIDS in Africa is a long-term task that

requires sustained effort and planning

• Prevention of new HIV infections is key element

• Prevention, treatment, care and support strategies are needed to

meet MDG goals , provincial and national strategic plan targets .

• Mobilizing unprecedented resources for delivering effective HIV

programs
