March 2017 Issue 8 From the Principal’s Desk... Dear Parents and Guardians, Thank you to the parents and other community members who either visited or vol- unteered at our school wide Health Jam in February. Hopefully your child(ren) came home and shared with you what was learned throughout the day. Along with many of our favorite returning presenters, we had several new presentations, and all were well received. As a staff, we believe it is important to focus on health and wellness with all of our children. Good habits, developed now, will lead to healthier adults later! I would like to give special thanks to our school’s wellness team for their hard work in preparing this awesome day! Our wellness efforts con- tinue to be a model for elementary schools throughout the district, and across the state. On March 3, Edith Wolford will be recognized, for the fourth time, as a Healthy School Champion at the annual Healthy Schools Summit, sponsored by the Colorado Education Initiative. I am proud of our students, staff, and parent com- munity. This year, Mrs. Bonnell, our art teacher, is working after school with a group of fifth graders to spruce up our cafeteria with three beautiful forest scenes. While not yet completed, they are already looking great. Many thanks to Mrs. Bonnell and our students for giving back to the Wolford Community! Spring parent teacher conferences are almost here. We encourage all of our par- ents to plan to attend these valuable meetings with your child(ren)’s teachers. At this time, staff will be sharing information regarding achievement and growth, as well as seeking input from you about your child(ren). Conferences will be held Wednesday evening and all day Thursday, March 22nd and 23rd. Students will not have school on March 23rd and 24th. The staff joins me in wishing you all an enjoyable, relaxing Spring Break, March 27- 31. We look forward to seeing all of our students when classes resume on Monday, April 3rd. March Counselor’s Corner

Dear Parents and Guardians,

For the past several months I have been teaching lessons on conflict resolution. My goal is to teach students several positive ways to deal with difficult situations. Students have been taught to differentiate between minor problems they can solve and those that are potentially dangerous and serious, where they need an adult to help. We use a program

called Kelso’s Choice at school.

Here are the ideas we discussed:

1) Walk away from the problem.

2) Cool off, count to ten, take a deep breath.

3) Ignore the problem behavior.

4) Tell the person to STOP the problem behavior.

5) Compromise.

6) Go to a different game or activity.

7) Respectfully talk it over and listen to each other.

8) Apologize.

9) Take turns.

10) If you encounter a SERIOUS problem, get adult help right away.

Please let me know if I can answer any questions for you.

Mrs. Frost’s Tag Tidbits

Opera: On February 25 seven students and several parents joined me at the Interquest The-aters to take part in the annual Metropolitan Opera HD Live in schools program. The students had a fun time in class preparing for this event and learning about the upcoming show. We attended the beautiful opera Rusalka (The Little Mermaid) by Antonin Dvorak. This was a new experience for most of us but we thoroughly enjoyed the costume, music, and behind the scenes live interviews from New York. We are looking forward to our next show on

March 11 when we attend La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi.

Chess Club has been a great success this school year. There are roughly 20 to 25 students who attend each Wednesday on a regular basis. Each grade level has students in attendance so therefore, we are able to have every grade level from our school represented in the District 20 annual tournament to be held April 8th at Eagleview Middle School. It’s not too late to come and learn how to place Chess or just brush up on some Chess playing skills. If you are interested,

please join us in the library on Wednesdays at 8 AM.

Rubik’s Cube Club has been an experience that I simply wanted to try out with a small group of students this year. The club has gone so well that various intermediate students are continually asking to join. So, keep your ears and eyes

open for this club opportunity next year that may enhance your child’s visual thinking!

Pennies for Patients Campaign

EWE Need to Know Page 4 of 6

The Edith Wolford Student Council ran a very successful Pennies for Patients Campaign for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society from Feb. 6th to 16th, 2017.

Our school goal was $1,000.00 and we raised $1,104.39 to help fund research to help beat blood cancers.

Thank-you to all our students, families, and staff who helped to make this a successful fundraiser at EWE!

We have a new addition to the library. With the help of Student Council and PTO funds we were able to create a memorial book shelf dedicated to Mrs. Edith Wolford. Mrs. Hidy, a long term volunteer, has worked hard on collecting special items and stories about Mrs. Wolford. We want our students to know who Mrs. Wolford was and why we are named after her. If you went to school with Mrs. Wolford or knew her personally, we would love to have memories from you. You may bring in your stories to the library. We hope you stop in and see our new addition!
