2012 Scholarship Committees Annual Appeal

for SCHOLARSHIP GOODY

BAG ITEMS It’s never too soon to set something

aside for spring! As the EWISP and ASIST committees begin plans for the 2012 scholarship programs, we want to get our advance notice out and ask for your help in obtaining promotional items from your firm to include in our "goody bags" for the three EWISP scholarship recipients and the three ASIST scholarship recipients (6 total). Assorted items such as pens, pen sets, portfolios, key chains, T-shirts, post-its, etc. are appropriate. With fewer bags to fill, please consider supporting the event with a few higher end items if possible. Keep in mind that these items do not have to be identical. However, any contribution you are able to make is appreciated. Please bring them to any upcoming meeting or we are happy to make arrangements for pick up. Thank you from your EWISP and ASIST Committee chairs,

Kathy Marchant and Ginny Czarnecki

Survey Says…Your Chapter Board is listening!! Thank you for experiencing the Milwaukee Public Museum with your fellow Chapter Members in March. The Chap‐ter Board would also like to thank you for your participation in the monthly surveys. The Chapter Board reviews and discusses your responses each month at the board meeting. The Board received 22 responses to the March survey and 95% percent of those responses were in the good to excellent categories. Thank you for making suggestions and providing feedback. Based on your feedback the Communications Committee will be posting on MyEWI with some forum topics that you suggested in the survey. Please be sure to login and share ideas on MyEWI. If you haven’t received your login cre‐dentials, please be patient. EWI Corporate is still working through the annual renewal process. Thank you for your continued participation in the monthly meeting surveys!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Learn more about Emily Phillips from New Resources Consulting. Who recruited you/how did you learn about EWI? I inherited the membership from Sarah Wendricks, my former co‐worker What made you want to join EWI? I am always interested in networking and developing meaningful relationships with women in the community for personal and professional reasons. The EWI seems to fit within my goals and I look forward to learning more about the members and the organization and also how I can contribute using my strengths. What about your firm are you most proud of? The IT consulting industry is SATURATED, so how NRC separates itself from the competition is in‐vest in different practices in order to offer unique solutions to companies rather than purely staff augmentation services. In addition to the aforementioned, we have invested in IP assets and soft‐ware products in order to diversify and create financial security in case of another reces‐sion. When you work for a privately held company it means a lot to understand, believe and agree with the vision the executive leadership is following – NRC does an excellent job in sharing that in‐formation and demonstrates its dedication to growth and reinvestment in the organization. Can you share one piece of personal information that you are most proud of? My senior year of college I was involved in a major car accident that resulted in 9 reconstructive plastic surgeries and prolonged my graduation by three years. I had intended on law school but by the time I graduated I was burnt out from school, surgery and working full time. I didn’t enter the work force at the time I thought I would or with the career I thought I would and it was a struggle to accept such an adjustment. However within the past 3.5 years since joining the work force I have done extremely well and it’s been rewarding to finally feel a sense of awesome accomplish‐ment after such a traumatic experience – it has made me appreciate everything in life and know that I can get through anything. Can you share a piece of information about yourself or your firm that most people aren't aware of or wouldn't expect? I am a sports nut – you name it, I love to play it and if I don’t know how I will learn it. From traditional team sports to taking up extreme sports like wilderness triathlons, I love doing it!! If there are any other adventurous members that share that passion, find me!!

MARCH BUSINESS MEETING

EWI Milwaukee March 6, 2012 Business Meeting On March 6, 2012 EWI Milwaukee Chapter members spent a night at the museum! Members greeted each other at the Milwaukee Public Museum (MPM) along with the smiling faces of the MPM staff. Members had the opportunity to view a movie about Cleopatra produced by Matt Wooten, Jaime Wooten’s husband (Fitness Advantage Trainer). Members and guests were then guided to the Streets of Old Milwaukee and the European village for delightful bever-ages and appetizers. After some friendly networking the Chapter was able to conduct its business meeting. The business meeting was called to order and communications were shared from various committees. Please refer to the chapter reports distributed by Vice President, Mary Caye Smith for detailed information. After business was concluded President Cortney Ewald Ihde opened the floor for discussion regarding the Chapter’s scholarship program with regards to the changes made to the EWISP awards. The members in attendance agreed to table the topic until after the Chapter scholarships were awarded in 2012. Then members will be able to discuss the challenges faced by the Chapter with the changes made to the EWISP program by EWI Corporate. Once again the Golf Committee wowed members with lots of great golf related giveaways to bring forth some chal-lenges that the Committee faces with regards to recruiting golfers. Be sure to watch your email for save the date, sponsorship and registration opportunities. And most importantly of all, be sure to share that information with every-one you know. Special thank you to MPM and Zilli’s Catering for providing a fun filled experience at no charge to the Chapter. This means that your meeting fees went right into EWI Milwaukee’s operating funds and did not incur any expenses. These funds will be put to good use for future programming for the Chapter. See you on April 3rd at the Harley Davidson Museum to learn more about the opportunities you can discover through volunteerism.

"Ask Colette" Column - How To Compete With an Office Favorite

Dear Colette, I have the same position as another person in my company, let's call him Joe. We have the same job title and responsibilities and report to the same manager. Our manager socializes with Joe regularly...they play sports together, have lunches and drinks after work, their families even vaca-tion together. The company has been experiencing layoffs for the last few years. I feel like I have to work harder, do a better job, and make less mistakes than Joe. Our manager gushes about Joe like he can do no wrong. I don't want to be anyone other than who I am, however how do I even the playing field? Feeling Like A Red-Headed Step Child Dear Red Head, Yes, you are in a tough situation. If you speak your mind, you may come off as defensive and child-like. "You love him more than me." Yet if you let the situation continue as it is, you are politi-cally at risk. In today's more competitive world you must tactfully and authentically spotlight your talents, skills and abilities. For example, if you overhear your manager speaking of an upcoming project you have experience in, speak up. "When I was with ABC Company, I worked on a similar project and would be happy to share both the challenges and successes with you when you have the time." Taking this approach allows you to show your know-how without coming across needy or boastful. Have you learned something new from a seminar or book you read? Share it. "Just finished reading (title) and believe a few takeaways are applicable in our industry. Happy to share these with you if you have an interest." Again, you'll get invited to share or at a minimum let your supervisor know you are constantly growing and staying on top of your industry.
