Reid Harvey is a ceramic industrial designer, with professional focus on health applications which involve the use of pottery clays. The pottery products implicit include giant sized pottery water filters, as well as insulating pottery, rocket stoves.

Much of this work has been the outgrowth of knowledge gained at his alma mater, the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. For the pottery water filters, these have included candle filters, which have been treated with a very tiny amount of silver. The silver removes E. coli and other pathogens. The giant sized filters are referred to as packed particle beds- PPBs, a unique feature of which is that these can be sized according to the number of people, living in the community.

The PPB systems consist of granules of fired pottery. For these, the granulated filter bed is typically contained within a large sized, water storage container, where this is mid-way up the height of the container. For the largest sized communities, the largest water containers should be used, for the PPB systems, for which one filter unit will accommodate around two thousand people.

For smaller communities, of around five hundred, or so, much smaller water storage containers will be used. Concerning the insulating pottery rocket stoves, a particular attribute is that these will burn sticks of wood, and will give no smoke. Note that the production of one kg. of charcoal requires ten kgs. of wood, a great expense, both in terms of the environment and the stove user, in the home.

Trainings with pottery stoves have been done in many parts of both East and West Africa. For the initial systems of water filters, these contained candle filters, and the trainings were done in both Kenya and Nepal, in Southern Asia.

But of course, the candle filter systems were household sized, suggesting that the new emphasis be on the packed bed systems, as sized for communities. Such Packed Particle Beds- PPBs, are far more appropriate, whereas these are for entire large communities.

Much of his work in Canada was in wastewater management. He was part of a team of Engineers who developed simulation models for use in wastewater management, in the City of Vancouver. He returned to Kenya in the year 2000 and since then he has taught and done research in JKUAT. Between 2000 and 2002, he was the Chairman of the Department of Biomechanical and Environmental Engineering, JKUAT. His current research interest is in Water and Wastewater Management. Among the engineering units that James teaches, there is Open Channel Hydraulics, Solid Waste Management and Wastewater Engineering. He looks forwards to receiving a research grant that will enable him to undertake studies leading to the formulation of a Wastewater Reuse Policy for Kenya. He believes that such a policy would go a long way in protecting Kenya’s water resources and providing additional water for agricultural production.

Prof. James Wambua Kaluli, Associate Professor, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
