Revision Strategies
Choose a partner
Read both essays aloud before you start to write about or discuss the essays.
In the margins and on the back of your partner’s essay, answer all of the questions from the handout.
When you finish, return your comments to the writer.
Introduction: Does the introduction orient readers?
Thesis: Underline the writer’s thesis. Write what you believe
the writer’s argument to be in the margin near the thesis.
Evidence: Does the writer include quotations with clear in-text
citations for line numbers? Are all quotes discussed/explained
sufficiently
Formal features: Does the writer discuss rhetorical and poetic
devices?
Conclusion: Does the conclusion reinforce the thesis and
persuade you of the viability of the claim?
Writing: How does the author create a logical progression for
the essay?
MLA Formatting: Is the essay in MLA format?
What is the strongest aspect of this paper?
What is the weakest aspect of this paper?
Additional comments
When you both finish writing, return the essays to their owners. Look at your essay to make sure you understand the writer’s comments. Take some time to discuss your essays and comments.
Writing Tips Write about literature in present tense
Avoid using “thing,” “something,” “everything,” and “anything.”
Avoid writing in second person.
Avoid using contractions.
Cut wordy sentences
Avoid run-on sentences and fragments.
Check for misused words
Put commas and periods inside of quotation marks

Essay SubmissionsAll out of class essays are to be submitted to me
electronically before the class period in which they are due
or as otherwise indicated on the syllabus.
1. Before you submit your essay, please save your
file as your last name and the number 2, like this:

2. Submit your essay through Kaizena, a Google
Drive add-on, at
https://kaizena.com/palmoreessaysubmissiong
mail. Or simply use the link on our class
website home page.
This system allows me to respond to your essay with
both voice and written comments and to insert helpful
links.
5. Choose your document from your Google Drive.
You will be directed to a new page to choose a
delivery box from a drop down menu. Remember,
your essay must be saved as either a Google doc
or as a pdf for Kaizena to find it.
6. Add your essay to the appropriate EWRT 1C (Essay
#1, #2, or #3) from the drop down menu. Then, click
the “Ask for feedback” button again.
7. Once I have graded your paper, Kaizena will automatically share with you the link to the Google document in the comments section — located on the top-right corner of the Google document.
Then you will get the box pictured below. Clicking the link will take
you to your graded paper.
8. Click on the highlighted sections of the paper to
find both audio and written comments
concerning your essay and links to materials
that will help you improve your writing.
