EXALTED RULER’S MESSAGE Rocky Miclat PUBLIC SAFETY NIGHT 2010 AMERICA YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL Official Publication of Lompoc Lodge #2274 B.P.O.E. VOLUME 38 NUMBER 12 PUBLISHED MONTHLY MARCH 2010 My final impressions I wish from you, my brothers and sisters as your Exalted Ruler are about gratitude. I feel as though I should have spent at least 8 to 10 years as an active Elk involved in the many Functions at our Lodge or retired to enjoy my new freedom in the benevolent work available to support our members and the community. However, because I chose to become an Officer, the words of the obligation guided my experience as an Elk. I tried to embody those words you repeated as a new member during the solemn and binding obligation or just heard during the charge of each officer at Initiation. My service as Exalted Ruler may have appeared limited to just serving dinner, appearances at lodge functions, or just facilitating a Lodge meeting. However, if I did not become an officer, I would not have met you, known you, or felt the sorrow of your passing this world or your pain as I do now. My time shared as an Elk taught me the influence of a good deed will continue forever. I do not feel I accomplished much except act as a host or provided information or answers, some of which were not the best I could have provided. Calling and reassuring a spouse of a departed Elk member or reading the name of an Absent brother or sister was very difficult for me. Coordinating events or functions required a lot from me in that I needed to find a genuine way to connect with brothers and sisters with far more Elk know how and years more experience. Fidelity is the motto of my station. Having faith, my brothers and sisters will he extraordinary was part of that motto. And so I again mention my sincere gratitude. I cannot fairly list all the names of brothers and sisters who aided me during my year, but invite all Elk members to attend my day of appreciation, Sunday, March 28 at 2PM. Yes, I will attempt to th recognize everyone who helped this past year and fail because it is something I will always try to do better if I get the chance. I will award and honor the few selected as Officer of the Year, Citizen of the Year and Elk of the Year and will add a few more honors and rewards of my own. It has been a rare privilege to serve especially this past year. I ask that you support Charles Bishop and his team this upcoming Elk Year. They are all very deserving of your support. Thank you. Rocky, Dee Dee Miclat, and family . My Elk of the Month for March has been a major supporter of the Lompoc Elk Woodchuckers, organizer of the ever growing Veterans Day event, and has supported many fundraisers and dinners especially during the District Ritual Competition at our Lodge last year. He is Past Exalted Ruler, Randy Tillman. Thank you, Randy. The Lompoc Past Exalted Rulers are hosting The Public Safety Appreciation Night this year on April 15 in the Lodge ballroom. There will be some changes to the program due to budget shortfalls but the annual event will continue. The dinner and plaques will be complimentary for the Award recipients and their spouses. PER George P. George has volunteered to pay for the military dinners keeping in line with The Elks support of Veterans and the military. The participating agencies attending members will pay for their dinner. We are hoping that the attendance this year will be as responsive as in the past and all will enjoy the evening as they honor their most outstanding performers for the past year. The Valor award was presented to a prison guard last year, the prison’s first year of participation. Hopefully there will be a candidate to earn the Valor Award this year. We are fortunate to have such fine public safety personnel in our city, county and at Vandenberg AFB to make our lives easier, peaceful and pleasant. Honoring them one night a year is the least we can do to say thank you. Thankfully we have all the help from the Elks to make this work. The Lodge Staff, cook, ways and means, bartenders, Bob Schrum for pictures and all the PER’s pitch in that night to help also. Thank you to everyone. Looking forward to being around you again this year. Dick Kroemer, PER, Chairman

When I was 12 years old I was ina Boy Scout Troop in Moreno Valley,we had a lot of boys whose fatherswere in the Air Force at March AFB.One of the boy's was named Steve and

he was a little different. Steve was a tall, thin, awkward boywho was always reading something. He seemed to say theoddest things and kept to himself a lot of the time; but he wasalways at everything. We never considered him as much, but weleft him alone. We went on a campout in the hills behind Hemetwhere the Scoutmaster owned some property. It was verybrushy; but there was water and a flat, clear area in which tocamp. Saturday morning we hiked in about 2 miles and set upcamp. We were using a wood campfire for cooking and we alltook food that we had to cook. That night it started to rain. Itrained hard for a couple of hours and drizzled until dawn.Luckily it cleared up by morning and we could go about thebusiness of getting ourselves something to eat. We looked highand low for some dry wood, but no luck. We proceeded to tryto start a fire with what wood we could find. After about anhour of trying to start a fire with no avail we were at eachothers throats. Steve comes out of his tent with a book in hishand and wants to know what the problem was. We explainedto him that we would have nothing to eat unless we could get afire started and all we had was wet wood. He proceeded to builda fire like I have never seen before from the wet wood . Withone match, he started it and within a few minutes we had aroaring fire. We asked him where did he learn to build a firelike that. He said the Air Force survival manual and proceededto show us the page in the book where we could find how tobuild a fire. He saved the day! I had a new respect for Steveand I learned that you shouldn't discount someone just becausethey are different. Sometimes they can bring a new prospectiveto a situation. Everyone has something to contribute, you justhave to take the time to listen to them and see things from theirprospective. After that camp out, I saw Steve in a differentlight.

Today the buzz word is diversity. Seeing things from theother guys point of view and respecting them, is what it seemsto be about. As Elks, we have done that from the beginning. The very nature of the Fraternal structure insures diversity. Weare a collection of different people with different backgroundssharing like ideals. Brotherly Love is what binds us togetherand from that love comes understanding. Given the rightcircumstances, anyone can shine like a new penny. Don'tdiscount someone because they are different, like Steve, theycould surprise you.The Biggest Boy Scout in the LodgeBob Murray

Thank you to all the members who contributed to theMarch on the Can at the Lodge meeting, the Woodchuckers andGeorge P. George in support of our entries in the State HoopShoot Contest.

Lodge elections are over and congratulations to all ourOfficers. This month will see the inauguration of these Officersand the ER appreciation day. Be sure to attend these Lodgeevents.

We are still working with the Bankruptcy Court on ourproperty next door (formerly Honda Cycles) to get the facilityback from the court. Government agencies move very slow.

February has been hard on the maintenance part of theLodge budget. Both AC/Heater units for the Ballroom hadproblems, requiring approximately $1500 to fix. However wenow have heat for lunches and events in the Ballroom.

Our maintenance contractor replaced the exhaust ducts onthe BBQ Room with taller units that remove smoke from theroom more efficiently.

The Trustees are constantly repairing small items in andaround our facilities. We want to thank Tony Bettencourt forhelping rebuild the Ballroom Chairs.Jim Martin, Chairman

March is here, ready or not. All is well with my VeteransProgram. I was reading a News Letter from the Grand Lodgeabout trying to get our young people interested in our VeteransPrograms. My teen aged grand daughter has been helping withbringing the Veterans from the Convalescent Care Center to theLodge for their monthly outing. This is a school project for herand it helps me a great deal in the Veterans Program. If anyoneknows of any young people who might be interested in thisendeavor, please contact me. As you most likely know, ourteens are our future leaders.

Thanks again for all the aluminum cans. If you can’t bringthem to the Lodge, let me know and I will pick them up at yourhome.

And finally, I can’t say enough about all you that makedonations to this program. I know you have heard it from mebefore, but this program would not be active without your help. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.FraternallyJohn P. Hurd, Vets Chairman

Hopefully you all heard how successful our Hoop Shootprogram was this year. We had 3 participants win 1 place atst

the District competition in Goleta. They are: AmyBoomersbach for Girls 8-9, Cody Boomersbach for Boys 10-11and BJ Taylor for Boys 12-13. All 3 kids went on to the Statecompetition in Sacramento and did very well. They all had agreat time, but none took a 1 place. I wanted to say Thank youst

to the WoodChuckers, George P. George, and for those whodonated to the “Walk on the Can” during the lodge meeting. This money helped with the excess costs of the hotel rooms, gasand meals.

Did you all get enough to eat at the Taco Dinnerfundraiser? I hope so!! Thank you to the Chili Pepper crew foranother great meal and to Paula Mora for her yummy salsa. It’swonderful to see so many people come out to support.

I don’t have a date yet for KID’S KNIGHT but I’ll post itin the lodge when it gets set up. Let me know if you have anysuggestions for dinner.

GUESS WHATS COMING? YES IT’S THE BEDRACES. I know it’s early, but I’ll be looking for participantsso in case you need time to get in shape, its usually in August.

I want to take a moment to Thank all the Officers fortheir service this past year and for taking an interest in eventsI try to do. I have appreciated all their support and efforts. Tothe incoming Officers, I’ll continue to try and do my best forthe upcoming year. Together, Elks make a difference and Ithink it shows. See you in the Lodge.Tarry Hetzel, Youth Activities

Nine rigs arrived at Wine Country RV in Paso Roblesmost of them in the rain, but that’s what umbrellas are for.

The rigs that arrived on Thursday went to Big BadBubba’s BBQ for dinner, when most of the group arrived fordinner they found Juan and Lillie in the jail, but they wereallowed to return to their rig. Friday night was a potluck, andwith the cold and rainy weather, we had a variety of soups andchili, just what the night called for. We had several birthdaycakes for the many people celebrating; they were Mark andJulie Sherman, Judy Osbornand Bob Kennedy. There wereseveral anniversary’s celebrated also, the Jure’s and theKennedy’s. After dinner we played a marathon game of 31 lastingthree hours and Bev Kennedy won this game as well as theother two games we played during the weekend. Saturday morning we had a pig out breakfast everything wasgreat, Julie made her applesauce pancakes and Jay cooked eggsto order. Another successful pig out.

Several couples went wine tasting at many of the localwineries. With the rain coming down many of us stayed in ourcozy RV’s and watched movies. Saturday night’s dinner wasspaghetti and meatballs with salad and baked potatoes. TrailBosses Mark and Julie Sherman did another great job.

Our meeting was held Sunday morning and our nextcampout will be at Morro Dunes.Bev & Bob Kennedy

Our candidate, Paola (Paula) Zaragoza, was introduced tothe Lodge on February 2 and is ready to start “working” for us. We do not have anything scheduled for February, however weare having s spaghetti dinner kickoff on March 4. Please markyour calendars and plan to be here to get this contest off to agood start.

We will also be having a Tostada dinner in the lounge onMarch 18. The desert bar will start on March 31 and will runthrough June 16. Please let me know if you are willing todonate deserts for our Queen. We have planned for a ChickenFried Steak dinner on April 1 and a car wash at the Lodge onApril 10. April 15 we will be having BBQ Chicken and aCountry dinner dance in the ballroom on May 8. Any and allhelp will be appreciated.

I have not heard anything about the golf tournament at thistime, but we are hoping that things will fall into place so thisevent can take place. As I get more information, I will postflyers at the Lodge, and update everyone in the bulletin.

Let’s support Paula and make this “Our Year”.Judi Courtemanche, Elks Queen Chairman

To My Brothers and Sisters in Elkdom,l am pleased to announce that Lompoc Lodge 2274 had

one Most Valuable Student applicant to go forward to State forconsideration. I am sure that I am not alone in wishing thisstudent the best. I would like to believe that he will win andreceive a full ride to a college of his choice. The Most ValuableStudent Award is given to a student that exhibits not only highscholastic achievement but is also involved in his communityand extra curricular activities.

The Elk’s National Foundation fully funds this programfor our future leaders . If this student is not the recipient of afull scholarship there are other monetary amounts that areavailable. In today’s economy, every contribution to educationis greatly needed. Please continue your donations to the ENFso that our students may find funding though the Elks. Thereare still scholarships available through ENF for Senior students. Please see our lodge secretary for more information.

The Lompoc Ladies Auxiliary presented a check to theScholarship Fund in the amount of $300.00. This donation isgreatly appreciated in that it will help fund Lompoc ElksScholarship Program. Thank you ladies!

In May we will once again give out scholarships to onesenior boy and one senior girl as our MVP with our Student ofthe month program. in the past we have also made awards to theother students but I am afraid this year we will be donating lessto all of the recipients. Any donations to the Lompoc 2274Student of the Month would be more than appreciated and helpwith some of the educational expense out future leaders willexperience.

The Scholarship Committee will be hosting a fundraiserthis month. March 25th we will serve an enchilada dinner. Asyou know, Bridgette and her Chili Pepper crew make the bestenchiladas in town. If you have not had the pleasure of tastingthis wonderful Mexican fare, I strongly suggest you attend. Asusual we will be taking pre-orders for enchiladas only. Thedinner of 2 enchiladas, rice and beans will cost only $10.00,and the proceeds will go to great cause. So come and take ofyour hunger for dinner as well as doing something great for ourcommunity.

Remember, without your support our Lodge cannotprovide the community support it so desperately needs.Respectfully,Vicki Duerr, PERStudent of the Month Chairman
