Flexor digitorum profundus (FDP)1 arises in part from the common flexor tendon

2 is innervated exclusively by the median nerve

3 is innervated by the median and radial nerves

4 gives rise to four tendons whose distal attachments are to the bases of the middle phalanges of the digits

5 is a pronator of the forearm

Page 23: Exam Questions Forearm Deep Flexors

The flexor digitorum profundus (FDP), along with flexor pollicis longus and pronator quadratus, belongs to the deep group of muscles in the flexor compartment of forearm. FDP has a dual motor innervation: the medial half of the muscle by the ulnar nerve, and the radial half of the muscle by the anterior interosseous nerve (also known as the deep branch of the median nerve). The four tendons of FDP (one for each of the fingers, none for the thumb) cross the palm and are attached to the bases of the terminal phalanges of the four fingers.

With regard to the flexor compartment of the forearm:1 flexor pollicis longus is attached to the radius , ulna and

medial epicondyle of humerus

2 the ulnar nerve lies medial to the flexor digitorum profundus muscle

3 pronator quadratus is innervated by the ulnar nerve

4 palmaris longus is absent in 50 % of Caucasian individuals

5 flexor carpi ulnaris arises in part from the common flexor tendon
