West Lakes Shore School StudentExcellence Newsletter
Term 4, Week 3 2019 - 1 November 2019
PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear Families,
What an outstanding Open Evening showcasing the school STEAM approach and our exceptional Art
Exhibition. A huge thanks to all staff for their effort, especially Ms Lisa Zappia and all the parent and
family volunteers for their help to set up the gym for the night.
Enjoy our student excellence edition showcasing some of the outstanding exhibitions and interactive
teaching and learning displays from classrooms.
FAMILY FEEDBACK
During the Open Evening we held a feedback station so families could look at improvements that had
been put in place since last years family feedback. I attach a copy of a powerpoint show so you can
see a snapshot of some of the things you fed back, what the school did and what we intend to do
for our next steps of improvement. We also invited families to ll out our annual school
questionnaire. If you haven't had the chance to do so please CLICK HERE FOR SURVEY and provide
your feedback. The questionnaire link will close on 8/11/2019 AT 11:59PM
CLASS STRUCTURE 2020
Changes in enrolment numbers can signicantly alter a class structure for the 2020 school year. We
are currently underway with nal decisions on this structure based on current enrolments. If you
know your child may be leaving our school please let us know immediately so we can consider this
and minimise any impact on having to reorganise 2020 classes. Thank you for your support and
understanding with this complex process.
STAFFING
This semester we welcomed Lucas Brenen to teach Japanese on Fridays for our Year 4 and Year 7
classes. As we could not nd an additional Japanese teacher our Year 5 and 6 classes and SD6 will be
attending an additional Performing Arts lesson each Thursday. These classes will be working on
performances for our end of year concert items. We are currently recruiting a 2020 Japanese Teacher
for two days a week to teach Upper Primary classes.
Kind regards
Carol Press

ADELAIDE CROWS CUP STATE CARNIVALAfter winning the Crows Cup for our district back in term two, our Year 6/7 girls were invited to
participate in the Crows Cup State Carnival. Twenty-four teams participated from all over the state,
including teams from as far away as Port Augusta and Burra. After our rst three games, West Lakes
Shore was categorised into Division One, playing against the ve other best teams in the state. We
nished fth overall and defeated schools along the way such as Westminster and Gleeson College,
which was a fantastic achievement.
The Division One nal was played with Trinity Gardens defeating Henley Beach in a close affair.
For participating in the carnival, the school was awarded a signed AFLW Adelaide Crows Sherrin
football.
CAMP CORNER
YEAR 4 ARBURY PARK CAMP REFLECTION“Sniff sniff, cough cough.” I was wide awake staring at a wall listening to people sniff and cough. I
wasn’t sure what time it was but I knew I wanted more sleep. I closed my eyes and nally fell asleep.
It was pitch black (not really but with my eyes closed it was.) and I heard some whispers so I woke
up and I saw 3 people awake: Olympia, Kiera and Stephanie. Kiera and Olympia were the ones talking.
When Olympia and Kiera got loud Mrs Marcos came out and said it was 4:50am. Then she went back
into her room and Kiera went into Olympias bed. Then I fell asleep.
It was morning and I woke up to Lily’s face. Everyone was talking loudly so it was hard to fall back to
sleep. I was standing by the bed and I was getting dressed when Mrs Marcos said there was going to
be a surprise inspection. Lily helped me do my bed and I helped her do hers. So when Ms Rozika got
there I was ready. Here’s what happened: Ms Rozika entered the dorm. She went to the other side.
She came to our side. She gave Lily’s bed a tick. She gave my bed a tick.
When I was outside everyone started heading to the playground for a play. I didn’t, I went to see Lila
by the seats. Lila and I went for a walk around and then we went back to the playground.
We were walking inside the tyres on the playground, it started off easy but then it got harder and on
the last layer it was so thin!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then the bell went at 7:45am for breakfast. After breakfast we were
choosing what activity we wanted to do for electives in the afternoon. The choices were: earth art,
earth walk, orienteering or a hike. I chose to do the earth walk.
When we nished breakfast and choosing our elective we went to the meeting area. In the meeting
area we were told that we were going to split into our groups. I was in group D so my rst activity
was team challenges on the tennis courts.
We walked over to the tennis courts where we started our rst challenge. The aim of the challenge
was to not step on the cones while wearing a blind fold and being given instructions by a partner
and getting to the other side. My partner was Lily. The next activity was to move 3 balls using a
hoop into a lake. Our next challenge was called octopus and we had to stack buckets using another
bucket with ropes attached to it. The nal challenge was where we had 5 pieces of felt and we had to
use these to get to the other side.
When we got back it was morning tea, for morning tea we had a wrap. After morning tea, we went off
to our next activity. My next activity was camp re cooking. We had to re-start a re that the
previous group had lit and then we started to cook damper on a stick.
When we got back it was lunch. For lunch we had a roll. In my roll I had pineapple. After lunch was
free time on the playground. At free time 2 dorms went for showers.
After free time we were doing the activity we chose to do. Suyin said that we could go to an activity
we didn’t choose so I went to earth art instead with Ashlynn and Lila We made a big ower using
we didn t choose so I went to earth art instead with Ashlynn and Lila. We made a big ower using
materials that we could nd outside.
For dinner, we had honey soy chicken, potatoes and a couple sides. I didn’t eat the chicken. Then for
dessert, we had vanilla sundae. After dessert, the rest of the dorms went for a shower. After the
shower we went back into the dining room for quiz night. Once this nished we went back to our
dorms and went to sleep.
It was the BEST CAMP!

6D STEM PROJECTIn SD1 and SD2, we did a STEM project in which we all created a house. That house has to withstand
a natural disaster, for example a volcanic eruption. We used the 6Ds of Solution Fluency as the design
process and the six stages are:
1) Dene – the problem…we had to design a house that could withstand a catastrophic event on a
chosen natural disaster.
2) Discover- natural disaster report. In which the learning intension was that know how your
specic natural disaster occurs, is measured and predicted and what engineering already exists
around the world to combat these disasters.
3) Dream - brainstorm what new, future or possible technologies that meet a design brief is
money and resources are not an issue.
4) Design – the learning intention was to create a multi-view technical drawing that incorporated
our research and ideas into a house design.
5) Deliver – Prototype building. We built our designs using recycled materials that reected the
materials we would have used in real life. Our success was measured by how close it matched our
drawn design.
6) Debrief – we nished off by critiquing our model and the design process. We also self- and
peer-assessed the complete projects as part of the process.
We enjoyed this project because we had a chance to be creative, we had to research, design the
house and build it on our own and we had to explore new technologies and think about different
designs. It was really fun to learn about natural disasters and the damage they can do.
HYDRATION IS THE KEY.... TO HEALTHY PEE!As part of Health, P2 and P4 students have been learning about why it is important to stay hydrated.
They were given the task to ‘design a poster to encourage students in our school to drink water’.
As you can see, their posters are very persuasive! Their fabulously, informative posters will be
displayed around the school, with the hope of educating students (and adults) to aim for clear pee!
