TERM 1 WEEK 4 Year 2M

2M have been producing some great quality handwriting already this year! I was sure I had some Year 6 students posing as Year 2’s and

doing handwriting for them, but I have double checked and they are definitely in the right class!

2M have taken their Quality Bookwork Policy very seriously and I can’t wait to see these books fill up with such neat writing.

LOOK AT THEIR AMAZING WORK !!

TERM 1 WEEK 4

It has been very enjoyable watching all of the Arcadia Vale PS students settle in to their new

classes. They have been working with their classroom teachers on our Quality Schools

Program which outlines the high expectations and systems and structures that we

implement at our school. In particular, our new whole school Positive Behaviour for

Learning (PBL) initiative which we are all excited about this year.

Students have been very engaged with their learning and the quality of work being

produced is of high standard already!

Our uniforms are looking great, just a reminder that all students need to have their hats on

daily and to wear plain white socks.

PARENT INFORMATION EVENING—MONDAY 22nd FEBRUARY

Our annual parent information night will be held on Monday 22nd February. Parents and

carers have the opportunity to meet the teacher and other parents/carers and see what

their child will be learning and different activities that they will be participating in

throughout the year. They will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss any

matters with the classroom teacher. Please see further information attached in the

newsletter.

MORNING SUPERVISION

Morning supervision begins at 8.45am. Please ensure that if your child/ren have to be

dropped before this time that they are seated and waiting patiently for the bell. If there

are any concerns, we will contact you directly to let your know.

DEPARTMENTAL GUIDELINES—IDENTIFYING AND RESPONDING TO UNWELL STUDENTS

Students must not attend school if they are unwell, even with the mildest of symptoms

including fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, shortness of breath, loss of taste and loss

of smell. Students need to be symptom free and a negative COVID-19 test result must be

received and sighted by the school prior to their return to school.

Students who do not undertake a COVID-19 test are not permitted to return to school for a

10 day period and they must be symptom free for at least 3 days prior to their return.

Students who have seasonal allergic rhinitis or another condition that presents similarly to

flu-like symptoms are still required to get tested for COVID-19 and return a negative test

result. Where their symptoms continue beyond 10 days, students should provide

documentation from their GP confirming their symptoms are typical for their condition.

Principal’s Report

TERM 1 WEEK 4 (continued)

Isolated incidents of sneezing and coughing may not indicate that a student is suffering

from an illness. Staff should talk with students about how they are feeling to determine if a

cough/sneeze is an isolated incident or whether the student is unwell. Where a student is

unwell arrangements should be made to send them home.

COVID-19 testing for very young students or students with complex health or disability may

be challenging. In these situations, schools are to ask the parent/carer to have their child

assessed by their medical practitioner. Where a medical practitioner determines that a

COVID-19 test is not indicated, a medical certificate must be provided to the school to

confirm that the student does not have symptoms that warrant a COVID-19 test. The

certificate must also indicate that the students is able to return to the school environment.

HAND, FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE

There has been a case identified in one of our younger students, please be aware and

monitor your child/ren with the following symptoms and please keep them at home if

showing signs: blisters that start as small red dots which later become ulcers. Blisters

appear on the inside of the cheeks, gums, the sides of the tongue, hands and feet. Blisters

usually last for 7-10 days. Children sometimes have a low fever, sore throat, tiredness,

feel off colour and may not eat for a day or 2.

It is usually spread by person-to-person contact. It is also spread be secretions from the

mouth or respiratory system, and by direct contact with the fluid from the blisters. It

usually takes between 3-5 days after contact with an infected person before blisters

appear. As long as there is fluid in the blisters, they remain infectious. Good hygiene is the

best defence! Contact us if you have cause for concern or need to keep your child at home.

MUSIC AND BAND LESSONS 2021

Mr Lock (music lessons) and Miss Dennis (piano lessons) had their first lessons with our

students yesterday. There is an expression of interest in the newsletter for any student who

would like to learn to play a musical instrument. Please email your interest with your

child’s name and preferred instrument to: [email protected]

Excellence Respect Community

OVERVIEW:

At Arcadia Vale Public School we have developed and implemented a whole school approach to Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL). We aim to support student wellbeing with a strong focus on the encouragement and development of appropriate behaviours. Positive Behaviour for Learning is a framework for the implementation of evidence based interventions to achieve academically and behaviourally important outcomes for all students. PBL operates on the premise that as well as children being learners of the curriculum, they are also learners of behaviour. Under the PBL approach, it is the role of the teachers and wider community members to explicitly teach children appropriate behaviours and to set explicit behaviour expectations in all settings throughout the school. This system of positive reinforcement acknowledges when students display appropriate behaviour choices and meet the school expectations. At Arcadia Vale we have identified our three school expectations as: Excellence Respect Community We have created a matrix of expected behaviours that reflect these three expectations. The school’s behaviour matrix is consistently used to explicitly teach the skills we want our students to be able to demonstrate. To support the implementation of Positive Behaviour for Learning, teachers collaboratively develop a collection of lessons that incorpo-rate PBL and Social/Emotional Learning (SEL) for teaching the different behaviour expectations. These focus on the inter-personal and emotional skills that ensure student safety and success. We use data and feedback to plan our PBL teach-ing program and the areas of focus for different times of the year. At Arcadia Vale, appropriate behaviours are acknowledged on a regular basis through praise and incentives to promote and reinforce behaviours demonstrated by individual students and classes. Negative behaviours are corrected proactive-ly. Specific interventions are used to address students who do not meet the three school expectations. Students are made aware of unwanted behaviour and are re-taught the desired expectation(s). Continued positive practice and con-sistency are the key to promoting student success.

The 5 New School Rules:

We have 5 new school rules that drive the success of students choosing to make positive behaviour choices. These rules

are consistently used across the entire school and in every school setting. The rules use the “I can” language to set a

clear set of expectations and put the ownership of the behaviour choices on to the students. Each class has created a

set of posters as visual reminders to assist with positive behaviour choices.

Implementation: The Positive Behaviour for Learning Process

For continued successful implementation of the PBL approach at Arcadia Vale Public School, it is imperative that all fami-

lies are aware of how PBL works. This will ensure consistency of language, expectations and continued successful out-

comes both at school and at home. The following processes have been implemented and are in place at our school.

• A PBL team is formed at the beginning of each year and consists of the Principal and three teaching staff • The PBL leader and members provide regular professional learning for the staff. • Each classroom is provided with a PBL Consistency Guide • Regular lessons are taught to instil the behaviour expectations and reinforce social/emotional skills. • The five step sequence posters, Prompt, Redirect, Reteach, Choice and Consequence and the matrices are visible and adhered to. • Data is entered daily on Sentral and this data informs the PBL team regarding where and when unwanted behaviours are occurring. It also assists us to identify students who are challenged and require further support • If students are flagged as experiencing challenges and difficulties, their parents will be notified and the student is invit-ed to become a part of the ‘Behaving Responsibly Program.’ This is a six week intervention program where the student will meet with the Student Wellbeing Leader twice a week to be taught explicitly the desired behaviours. • Information about PBL is presented at assemblies, in the school newsletter and at Parent Information Sessions. • Students are acknowledged for positive behaviours by moving up the classroom ‘ladder of success’ this acknowledges the displayed expected behaviour.

Teaching our Three School expectations and 5 School rules:

To maintain a happy and calm learning environment, our students are mindful of the three core values as well as our 5 School Rules in every learning environment. The staff at Arcadia Vale demonstrate consistency using a whole school ap-proach to recognise positive behaviours. All staff: • Teach and refer to the school consistency guide frequently throughout the school day • Praise students for accomplishing new tasks and meeting the whole school expectations • Provide students with the opportunity to experience success by prompting, redirecting, reteaching and providing choice • Talk to students with respect, using a positive tone • Actively engage everyone during instruction • Look for the positive first and provide specific feedback

Implementing Reactive Strategies:

Whilst we encourage and focus on positive behaviours, there will be times when it is necessary to implement reactive strategies. These strategies are how we teach students appropriate behaviours and how to manage their choices and ac-tions. The following strategies may be implemented in the event of repeated and/or major incident: • In-class Chill and Buddy Class Chill • Natural consequence, for example, when the rest of the class has reward time, the nominated student will sit out • Referred to a member of the PBL Team • Time out with a member of the PBL team in ‘The Nest’ with Behaviour Reflection sheet/lunch time planning • Explicit instruction – Behaving Responsibly Program using the behaviour consistency guide and school expectations • Letter, email or phone call to parents • Parent meeting • Individual Behaviour Support Plan (where necessary)

Communication Partnerships Between School and Home (We’re all in this together)

At Arcadia Vale, minor behaviours are recorded. This allows the staff to record observations of student behaviour and to

plan suitable support. Should the staff member hold concerns about the students continuing inappropriate behaviour,

they will consult with the Wellbeing Team and develop intervention strategies and further support. Observed behaviours

that are recorded as a major are recorded on Sentral and information is provided and reviewed by the PBL Team. This al-

lows the team to liaise with the teacher and the family to provide additional

support. Parents will be informed of concerns and contacted via emails, phone calls or meetings. The occurrence of con-sistent problem behaviours will result (in consultation with the family) in the student being placed on the Behaving Re-sponsibly program.

Classroom management system

Within the classrooms there is a visual aid this is in the form of a plate system with flowchart, this aligns with the Behav-iour Consistency Guide. Teachers are looking for ‘Green Plate’ behaviours consistency, giving instant feedback and praise. For those students who show above and beyond behaviour they will achieve ‘Gold Plate’ and receive what ever reward the classroom teacher and class has discussed.

Ladder of success

Each class has on display a ladder of success. This is another visual representation of how the student is tracking over the year. The aim for the students is to reach the milestone weeks to participate in the PBL rewards day. To achieve this, stu-dents who have not received an ‘Orange Plate’ will move up a rung of the ladder for that corresponding week. The aim is to have 85% of students make it to the week 40 reward. If a student is to miss a milestone reward day the aim is to have them reach this level the following term to the receive the achieved reward on PBL rewards day.

Conclusion

This is a brand-new behaviour system and will take some time to effectively implement and it is through your support and understanding that we can help the students at AVPS choose ‘Green’ when making behaviour choices and see them enjoy their rewards for consistent positive behaviour choices.
