Dear Parents, Next Wednesday we will mark the beginning of Lent with a whole school assembly celebrating the Ash Wednesday liturgy, organised by our Faith and Mission Coordinator, Les Butler. This is the preparation period for the most important celebration in the Church calendar. In the Early Church, Christians did not observe Lent because their focus was on remembering Easter, the time of Jesus’ Passion, Death and Resurrection. But by the year 600 CE, Christians kept the 40 days before Easter (not including Sundays) for what was called the Initiation of the Elect, that is, the preparation for Baptism of people who wanted to become Christians. It was also a time when people who had fallen back into serious sin after their Baptism could work at getting back on track, so that they could renew their baptismal vows at Easter. It was like a second baptism. The whole community supported those wishing to become Christians and those who wanted to return to the community. It was a time of prayer, fasting and repentance, so that at Easter when they remembered Jesus starting a new life after death, everyone could celebrate a new life in Him. BLESSING AND COMMISSIONING OF STAFF Last Sunday, the staff of St Brigid’s College, Ss Michael and John’s Primary and Our Lady Help of Christian’s Primary schools attended Mass to celebrate, with Parish members, the commencement of the school year and to be blessed and commissioned by Fr. Peter in our roles as educators. We affirmed to the Parish and to each other our roles through the following prayer: As Staff in our School communities we serve, we are called to work together, to create learning environments, to actively support the wellbeing of students and fellow staff, and to teach and to live Catholic education for all in our schools. It requires that we use our personal gifts and collective resources responsibly and generously, as we grow as Jesus’ disciples, and help our children to know His Good News, and live his Gospel. We commit ourselves to furthering the educational and pastoral work of the Parish as part of the evangelizing mission of the Church. We pledge ourselves to partnership of the school, the homes of the students, and the Parish, and to work to implement “Awakenings”, the Religious Education Curriculum of our Diocese. Amen. We, as the staff of St. Brigid’s, look forward to 2017 as we join in partnership with parents to educate your children for their futures.

Excelling in Life, Led by Faith.

Dear Parents,

Next Wednesday we will mark the beginning of Lent with a whole school assembly celebrating the Ash Wednesday liturgy, organised by our Faith and Mission Coordinator, Les Butler.

We affirmed to the Parish and to each other our roles through the following prayer:

As Staff in our School communities we serve, we are called to work together, to create learning environments, to actively support the wellbeing of students and fellow staff, and to teach and to live Catholic education for all in our schools.

SWIMMING SPORTS

A very warm day, lovely breeze, a cacophony of deafening and annihilated songs, a plethora of yellow, red, blue and green, an abundance of enthusiasm, innovative costumes and a substantial quantity of organisation and you have all the required ingredients for our St Brigid’s College Swimming Carnival held on Tuesday. Kildare was announced the winner, Tara, second, Clontarf, third whilst Melleray finished fourth. Congratulations to all students who ensured that the day was a resounding success with high levels of participation in most events.

The organisation of the day by Tamika Burdett and Cameron Pickering was excellent. I would like to extend my thanks to all staff who assisted on the day, to the parents who cheered on their children and to the Student House leaders, whose thorough preparation ensured the day’s success. Congratulations to the following students who have been named Age Champions for the respective age levels.

YEAR 7 “WELCOME” BARBEQUE

On a perfect night for a “get-together”, our Year 7 BBQ was a resounding success. To Cathy van Dyk who organised this “Welcome” BBQ for our new Year 7 parents and families, and to the staff who assisted Cathy, congratulations on a job well done. It was a wonderful occasion, clearly demonstrated by the outstanding number of Year 7 families present.

Yours in the community of St Brigid’s College

Italian students AND Japanese students at St Brigid's!!!!

A trickle of responses is coming in from families and students interested in hosting one of our Japanese sister-school students for three weeks in term 3.

St Brigid's has been approached by an international student exchange organisation to host one or possibly more students from Italy for a period of two months - considerably longer than the three weeks that we will have the group of fifteen Japanese students with us - in June and July this year. Details are, as yet, scanty, so we don't know if it will be a boy or girl, but we need to have a firm offer of host family support before we can definitely offer a place to any Italian student(s) who apply for this opportunity.

With interest in the study of Italian surging at St B's, along with the strong commitment to the study of Japanese that has developed since it was introduced to the College in 2014, this is a fantastic opportunity for us to make both languages a vital and authentic experience for all of our students. Please consider whether you might be able to offer your home and family as a base for a student from Italy - or a student from Japan. Without support from the parents and families within the school, we are unable to make possible what is a life-changing experience for the student who comes to us, the family with whom he or she will stay, and, often, for the students at school who become friends and school-buddies for the international student(s).

Please consider becoming involved and contact Jeni Allen at the College really soon: we need to be able to respond in time for our school to have a real chance to increase the international presence at St B's and broaden the overall experience and interest of our general student body in international awarenesses that enhance and enrich our general understanding of the world.

Please ask your son or daughter to pick up an Expression of Interest form from Jeni Allen or from the Front Office, Or email Jeni Allen directly at the College.

CANTEEN ROSTER

TA REPORT SCHEDULE

My disease is as rare as it is famous.

Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t

leave my house, have not left my house in

seventeen years. The only people I ever see

are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives

next door. I look out my window, and I see

him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—

black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and

a black knit cap that covers his hair

completely. He catches me looking and

stares at me. I stare right back. His name is

Olly. Maybe we can’t predict the future, but

we can predict some things. For example, I

am certainly going to fall in love with Olly.

It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.
