How to use the charts to work outyour desired metal weight.

Q. How do you calculate how much your gold sheet will weigh?

A. To calculate the weight of goldneeded, firstly the cm2 area must beworked out. Compare the size of goldneeded against the square cm chart or aruler. Using the shaded area as the sizeneeded, I can see that I need 2cm x 3cm= 6cm2

Then using the bullion charts, like the one above which show the approximate gram weightper cm2, I chose the metal for my work - 9Y and then the thickness of sheet I desire - 1.0mm.Reading from the chart, I can see that for 9Y 1.0mm sheet the gram weight per cm2 is 1.11g.Multiply this by your calculated cm2 to give a final weight:6cm2 x 1.11g = 6.66grammes total weight for my piece.

Q. How do you calculate how much your gold wire will weigh?

A. Simply multiply the gram weight per cm, given in the bullion tables, by the amount ofwire required. For example:

For 9cm of 9ct Yellow D’Shape Wire - Size 3.0 x 2.0mm - Code D3

Using the bullion chart in the same way as shown above, the wire weight is found to beapproximately 0.60g per cm. Therefore, multiplying this by the length desired gives:

9cm x 0.60g = 5.40 grammes of gold in total

The model of a man's signet ring has been made out of silver and weighs 7.90 grammes. Looking at the table alongthe standard (sterling) silver horizontal line and then matching this with the intersection of the 18ct Yellow gold HBgives the number 1.50.So, the approximate weight of a similar ring cast in 18ct HB would be:

7.90 grammes x 1.50 = 11.85 grammes in 18ct Yellow HB gold

Q. Why is there such a choice of different solders?

A. Most jewellers are familiar with small sheet pallion solder which can be cut to produce small squares of solder.Wire solder is useful for cutting, especially when small pieces of solder are desired. It is also useful for stick feeding.Paste solder is both flux and solder mixed ready for use. The paste solder comes in a easy to use syringe enabling youto work faster and dispensing just as much solder as required.

Health & Safety: Adequate ventilation should be provided when using these products.
