India jumps to 14th rank as best country for expats
According to HSBC, India leapt up the global rankings by 12 places to take the 14th spot in terms of
best country for expats to live and work in.
The list, which is topped by Singapore, is part of HSBC's latest 'expat explorer survey' that covered
27,587 expats from 159 countries and territories in March and April this year.
3 Indians in Forbes 100 greatest living business minds list
Three Indian corporate czars - Lakshmi Mittal, Ratan Tata and Vinod Khosla - have been named
in Forbes special list of the world’s 100 Greatest Living Business Minds.
Lakshmi Mittal is the chairman and CEO of Arcelormittal, Ratan Tata is Tata groups Chairman
Emeritus and Vinod Khosla is the co-founder of Sun Microsystems.
India ranks 103 on Global Human Capital Index
India ranked low 103rd out of 130 countries surveyed on World Economic Forum’s (WEF)
Global Human Capital Index (GHCI) 2017.
India was on 105 positions on the list last year, while the top spot was taken by Finland, pushed to
second place this year.
Norway topped the list followed by Finland, Switzerland, United States and Denmark.
Retail inflation in August shoots up by 3.36%
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) or retail inflation, as it is more commonly known, rose 3.36 per
cent in August from a year earlier.

India has been ranked as the 40th most competitive economy among 137 countries - slipping one

IISc ranked highest from India in World University Rankings 2018
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) retained top position among Indian Universities in the
Times World University Rankings 2018, but its position fell in global rankings compared to its last
year position.

India was ranked last at 43rd position in 2017 Global Retirement Index (GRI) published by French
asset management company Natixis Global.
Norway topped the list followed by Switzerland and Iceland.

Three major Indian companies including Hindustan Unilever, Asian Paints and Bharti Airtel have

After two consecutive years in second place, Salesforce finally overtook Tesla Motors (No. 2),
regaining the top spot as the world’s most innovative company – a title Salesforce had held from the
list’s inception in 2011 to 2015.
Amazon vaulted eight spots, emerging as No. 3 this year after 20 years in the public markets.
Rounding out the top 5 are Shanghai Raas Blood Products (No. 4) and Netflix (No. 5).

India, China home to 39% of young Internet users
According to ITU's ICT Facts and Figures 2017 report, India and China are home to 39 per cent of
the 830 million young people worldwide who use the Internet.
The data was released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations
specialised agency for Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).
Rising temperatures drive up farmer suicides in India
According to the research report from the University of California, Berkeley in US, climate change
may have led to over 59,000 farmer suicides over the last 30 years in India.
Even a 1°C increase in temperature above 20° C in a single day during the crop growing season
results in about 70 suicides on average.
India’s average temperature is expected to increase by 3°C by 2050.
India ranks 132 in commitment to narrow income inequality
India has ranked 132nd out of 152 countries on the inaugural “Commitment to Reducing Inequality
Index” released by international NGO Oxfam in association with Developmental Finance
International.
Sweden topped the index followed by Belgium, Denmark, Norway and Germany while Nigeria took
the bottom most spot.
India is world’s third-biggest beef exporter: OECD-FAO report
According to recently released OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2017-2026 report, India is the
world’s third-biggest exporter of beef.
Brazil was ranked as the world’s top beef exporter followed by Australia.
India exported 1.56 million tonnes of beef in 2016.
India imported 363,000 tonnes of beef in 2016 and the amount was projected to stay the same over
the decade.
Castor plant can reduce soil pollution: Study
According to study conducted by researchers from University of Hyderabad, Castor bean plants can
prove useful in fighting soil pollution.
It was found that these plants can absorb toxic heavy metals from soil from these polluted areas due
to industrial pollution.

India has been ranked low 116 out of 157 nations on the 2017 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)
Index and Dashboard report released by Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and
Bertelsmann Stiftung.
The index assesses the performance of countries towards achieving the ambitious SDGs. It ranks
countries based on their performance across the 17 SDGs.
India with a score of 58.1 was ranked 116th on the index, behind countries such as Nepal, Sri Lanka,
Bhutan and China.
Raipur Airport ranked first in Customer Satisfaction Index Survey
Raipur’s Swami Vivekananda Airport was ranked first in Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) Survey
among 49 airports in the country.
It has achieved 4.84 score on a five point scale index.
It was followed by Udaipur (2nd), Amritsar (3rd) and Dehradun (4th) airports which have scored
4.75, 4.74 and 4.73 respectively.
India to become largest milk producer in 2026
The recently released OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2017-2026 projected India to be the most
populous country over the next decade.
India will be the world’s largest milk producer by 2026 and will account for the biggest increase in
wheat production globally.

According to the research conducted by the Centre for International Development at Harvard

India ranked 23rd in second Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI)
India has been ranked 23rd out of 165 nations in the second Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) that
measures the commitment of nations across the world to cyber security.
The Index has been released by the UN telecommunications agency International
Telecommunication Union (ITU). India has been listed in the “maturing category” of the index with
a score of 0.683.
Singapore has topped the index with a score of 0.925. Singapore is followed by United States and
Malaysia.
India ranked 96th in FIFA Rankings
As per the updated FIFA world football rankings, the Indian national football has managed to secure
the 96th spot moving up four places. Earlier, India was placed at the 100th position.
India’s TERI ranked second among world’s climate think tanks
New Delhi-based The Energy Resources Institute (TERI) was ranked second among world’s best
climate think tank by the International Centre for Climate Governance (ICCG).
TERI was ranked number two under the category ‘2016 Top Climate Think Tanks in the Rest of the
World-Absolute Global Rankings’ during ICCG’s 23rd annual conference of the European
Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) in Athens, Greece.
India placed 88th in money hoarded in Swiss banks
As per analysis of the latest figures compiled by the Zurich based SNB (Swiss National Bank) as on
2016-end, India has slipped to the 88th place in terms of money parked by its citizens with Swiss
banks.
India was ranked in top-50 continuously in terms of holdings in Swiss banks between 1996 and
2007, but it started declining after that and was placed at 55th in 2008, 59th in 2009 and 2010 each,
55th again in 2011, 71st in 2012, 58th in 2013, 61st in 2014 and 75th in 2015. It was ranked highest
at 37th place in 2004.
WHO declares end of Ebola outbreak in Congo

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the end of the most recent outbreak of Ebola
virus disease (EVD) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The announcement comes 42 days (two 21-day incubation cycles of the virus) after the last
confirmed Ebola patient in the affected Bas-Uélé province of DRC tested negative for the disease for
the second time.

to provide disaster management in India.
The Relief 123 service is an integrated disaster response solution for first responders and public
safety agencies. It has been designed and manufactured by VNL.
Maharashtra signs MoU with South Korea
South Korea has agreed to enter into business partnership with the Maharashtra govt’s ambitious
Rs 46,000-crore Nagpur-Mumbai Super-communication Expressway (also called Samruddhi
Corridor) to push mega-infrastructure projects.
BDL signs contract for supply of MRSAM to Indian Army
Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has signed contract with Research Centre Imarat (RCI) for supply
of Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (MRSAM) to Indian Army.
EESL to procure 10,000 electric vehicles from Tata Motors
State-run Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) has announced that it will procure 10,000 electric
vehicles (EVs) from Tata Motors. It is world’s largest single electric vehicle procurement.
EESL had selected Tata Motors through international competitive bidding for this procurement.

Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA): It looks into the matters related to
the progress of government business in the Parliament of India.
Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA): It is responsible for all issues related to
domestic and foreign affairs. It is most powerful cabinet ccabinet committee and is described
as Super Cabinet.
Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS): It is one of the most important committees in India,

National Mission for Clean Ganga approves 10 projects
The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has approved ten projects in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar
and West Bengal to the tune of about Rs. 2,033 crore.
These projects were approved in the 5th meeting of the Executive Committee of NMCG.
Eight of the ten projects pertain to sewage infrastructure and treatment, one each to ghat
development and Ganga Knowledge Centre.
In Bihar, three major sewage infrastructure projects were approved in Barh, Kankarbagh and Digha.
In West Bengal, three projects were approved.
In Uttar Pradesh, sewage infrastructure work in Chunar, district Mirzapur, has also been approved at

Lok Sabha passes bill approving merger of associate banks with SBI
The Lok Sabha passed the bill to repeal the SBI (Subsidiary Banks) Act 1959, State Bank of
Hyderabad Act 1956 and to further amend the State Bank of India Act, 1955, following the merger
of five associates with the parent SBI.
The merger of the five associate banks with the SBI will lead to increased capital base and
availability of loan.
With this merger, the SBI has come in the list of top 50 banks globally and is ranked at the 45th
position.
The farm loans increased from Rs 3.5 lakh crore in 2009-10 to Rs 10.65 lakh crore in 2016-17.
Five associates and the Bharatiya Mahila Bank became part of State Bank of India (SBI) beginning
April 1, catapulting the countrys largest lender to among the top 50 banks in the world.
The five associates that were merged are State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur (SBBJ), State Bank of
Hyderabad (SBH), State Bank of Mysore (SBM), State Bank of Patiala (SBP) and State Bank of
Travancore (SBT).
Following the merger, the total customer base of SBI increased to 37 crore with a branch network of
around 24,000 and nearly 59,000 ATMs across the country.

Parliament has passed the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2017 with the Rajya Sabha
approving it.
The bill will replace the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2017 promulgated by

The Union Cabinet has approved revision of guidelines of Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGB) Scheme
with a view to achieve its intended objectives.
The Union Govt had launched SGB Scheme to develop a financial asset as an alternative to
purchasing metal gold.
The mobilisation target under the scheme was Rs. 15,000 crore in 2015-16 and at Rs.10,000 crore in
2016-17.
However, the amount so far credited in Government account is Rs. 4,769 crore.

The parliament has passed The Collection of Statistics (Amendment) Bill, 2017 after it was approved
by the Rajya Sabha. The Lok Sabha has passed it earlier.
Cabinet approves new wage code bill to ensure minimum wage across all sectors
The Union Cabinet has approved the Labour Code on Wages Bill which will ensure a minimum
wage across all sectors by integrating existing labour related laws.
The Labour Code on Wages Bill consolidates the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, the Payment of Bonus
Act, 1965, the Payment of Wages Act, 1936 and the Equal Remuneration Act, 1976.
At present, laws on wages do not cover workers getting monthly wage of more than Rs 18,000.
The minimum wage will be applicable on all classes of workers, even workers getting monthly pay
of higher than Rs 18,000 will be legally entitled to a minimum wage.

National Seed Research and Training Centre (NSRTC) in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

5 States, 1 UT ink MoU with Centre on Govt e-Marketplace
5 States and a Union Territory (UT) have formally adopted the Centre’s Govt e-Marketplace (GeM)
initiative.
They are Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh and Puducherry (UT).
In this regard, this states/UT have signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) to join GeM
initiative.
Four more states including Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand and Haryana, will ink such MoU
soon.
HAL signs MoU with Defence Ministry
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for 2017-18
with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in Delhi.
The annual MoU was signed by Ashok Kumar Gupta, Secretary, Department of Defence Production,
and T. Suvarna Raju, Chairman and Managing Director, HAL.
The MoU outlines targets on various performance parameters of the company during 2017-18.
The revenue from operations has been targeted at ₹17,900 crore, the highest ever.
The company has also laid specific emphasis on capacity building, modernization, solar power
plants, aiming to achieve capital expenditure of ₹1,300 crore.

GMR Goa International Airports Limited (GGIAL), subsdiary of GMR Airports, has successfully
executed a debt facility arrangement for the development of the greenfield project at Mopa in north
Goa by signing a common loan agreement with Axis Bank.
The bank will provide the company with Rs 1330 crore.
Vietnam renews Indian Oil Deal
Vietnam has granted ONGC Videsh a two-year extension to explore oil block 128 in the South China
Sea.
The permission was first granted in the year 2006 which is due to expire in mid-June.
The part of the oil block 128 is in the U-shaped ‘nine-dash line,’ the area which is claimed by China.
India and Bangladesh have decided to construct bridge along Mizoram Border
India and Bangladesh have decided to construct a bridge over
Mizoram’s Khawthlangtuipui river (also known as Karnaphuli River) to facilitate trade and to
improve communication between the two countries.
India-Bangladesh Border Mizoram has a 318 km unfenced border with Bangladesh.
The remaining half will be fenced by 2019 deadline.
India and Bangladesh share a 4,096 km land boundary, largest among the international boundaries
that India shares with its neighbours.
The border runs along five states, West Bengal (2,216.7 km), Assam (263 km), Meghalaya (443 km),
Tripura (856 km) and Mizoram (318 km).
China-backed AIIB approves USD 329 million loan for Gujarat rural roads
The China-backed Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in Beijing has approved a USD 329
million loan to build access roads to 4,000 villages in 33 Gujarat districts.

India and Israel announced a strategic partnership between the two countries after a meeting between

EPFO signs Agreement with Five Banks
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has inked an agreement with four private
banks and Bank of Baroda for the purpose of collection of provident fund dues from the employers
and payments to its subscribers.
This is the first time the EPFO has roped in private banks, namely, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis
Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank.
The five other banks are State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank, Allahabad Bank, Indian
Bank and Union Bank of India.

India, ADB inks $220 million Loan Agreement for Rajasthan State Highways Investment Program
The Union Govt and Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed a $220 million loan agreement
for improving connectivity as well as transport efficiency and safety on State Highways of
Rajasthan.
The loan will be provided as the first tranche of the $500 million Rajasthan State Highways
Investment Program, approved by ADB Board in May 2017.
The Program will upgrade about 2,000 kilometers of state highways and major district roads to two-
lane or intermediate-lane standards to meet road safety requirements.
Railways, NBCC ink MoU to redevelop 10 railway stations
Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has inked MoU with National Building Construction
Corporation (NBCC) for redevelopment of 10 railway stations across the country on global
standards.
The identified stations to be taken up initially by NBCC, a PSU of Urban Development Ministry for
redevelopment are Tirupati, Nellore, Puducherry, Sarai Rohilla (Delhi), Madgaon, Lucknow,
Gomtinagar, Kota, Thane (New) and Ernakulam.

Paris gets 2024 Summer Olympics, Los Angeles awarded 2028 Games
The International Olympic Committee awarded the 2024 summer Olympic Games to Paris and
the 2028 edition to Los Angeles following a vote in the Peruvian capital.
Paris, which has hosted two previous Olympics, will stage the event 100 years after its last Games in
1924 while Los Angeles will also organize its third Games after 1932 and 1984.
The IOC decided in July to award both Games at the same time, following the withdrawal of four of
the six cities bidding for the 2024 Olympics, amid concerns about the size, cost and complexity of
organizing the world's biggest multi-sports event.
It is the first time the IOC has awarded Games 11 years in advance.
Tokyo is the host of the next summer Games in 2020.
