Bill Gates praises Andhra for using tech to help farmers

PM Modi is beacon of democracy: Ivanka Trump

“Andhra Pradesh is taking bold steps. I expect we will be accelerating it (technology usage). More than half of India’s population in engaged in agricul-ture, and three-fourths of rural women are engaged in agriculture. Apart from gender equality, research has shown that having more women also increases production by 20 to 30 percent,” Gates said at the valedictory session of the AP AgTech Summit-2017. Gates also noted that the growth in economy will not only lead to a higher Gross Domestic Product (GDP), but also lift people out of poverty.“First, we can turn the largest economic sector in the country into a source of growth instead of a drag on the economy. Secondly, we can make sure that growth is inclusive and that it not only leads to a higher GDP but also lifts people out of poverty. Third, we can produce enough nutritious food to

Ivanka Trump, daughter and adviser to US President Donald Trump, visited Hyderabad for the annual Global Entrepreneurship Summit co-hosted by India and the US. For the first time, the GES was held in South Asia. Gates fur-ther said, “Two examples that I am very impressed with; one is the Mega Seed Park, which really is the first of its kind and it will make available lots of high quality seeds and coupled with that is the new EC distribution application, D Krishi, which will help farmers access quality seeds in a timely manner and ensure that the government’s resources are being widely used. These are the kind of innovations that will help achieve the Chief Minister’s goal of sus-tained double digit economic growth in Andhra

Pradesh over the next decade.”Gates, landed in Visakhapatnam and visited the exhibition stalls in the summit along with Andhra Pradesh chief minister. The summit focused on innovative ideas, technol-ogies and global best practices to push agricultural transformation in the state. This three-day global event was organised by the Andhar Pradesh Government in association with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Dalberg Advisors.More than 1,500 global leaders from 61 countries including business heads, start-up founders, leading policymakers, progressive farmers, NGOs, agricul-ture and technology experts participated the sum-mit over three days.

The theme of this year’s summit is ‘Women First, Prosperity for All’ and included 1,200 young entre-preneurs, and most of them are women.Hyderabad played host to the eighth edition of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES). Powered by Kaspersky Lab, ASSOCHAM’s Cyber Resilience Summit addresses India’s most pressing security concerns

India’s most important decision-makers congre-gated at The Associated Chambers of Commerce of India (ASSOCHAM)’s Cyber Resilience Summit held at Le Meridien, New Delhi. The august gathering included top professionals from the government, ASSOCHAM, Cyber Security cells, Ernst & Young and Kaspersky Lab, one of the world’s leading cyber security brands. The one-day event addressed the most pressing issues India and the world face in cyber security, and how best to handle them. Steering Team Kaspersky was Mr. Stephan Neu-meier, Managing Director – Kaspersky Lab (APAC), and Mr. Shrenik Bhayani, General Manager – Kasper-sky Lab (South Asia). Mr. Neumeier addressed the current issues such as the cyber threat landscape is becoming ever more complex and destructive. Over few months, attacks targeting governments and enterprises have increased significantly in both number and range with measurable impact on rep-utation, revenue, operations and customers. In the last year we witnessed a number of cyber breaches, malicious ransomware and economic espionage. “For the last 20 years, Kaspersky Lab has been

working around the clock every day – analyzing and combating all kinds of IT threats that have evolved in that time, making the world a better place. I am proud that Kaspersky Lab remains at the forefront of the cybersecurity industry and being the first within the industry to start with initiatives such as the Global Transparency Centre shows our strong commitment and passion for cybersecurity,” noted Mr. Stephan Neumeier. The summit saw a strong line-up of cybersecurity experts from Kaspersky Lab giving an overview of the landscape in India and the world and what to expect in the near future. Mr. Vitaly Kamluk (Director of GReAT, APAC, Kasper-sky Lab) provided a bird’s eye view of the cyberse-curity landscape in India and the world, apprising how the situation has changed drastically over the last decade. “There is no doubt that targeted attacks have become the most dangerous threat to govern-ments and enterprises globally in 2017. Massive data breaches, black mailing with a threat of global privacy disaster and reputational catastrophe have

become a common thing. Leaks of dangerous exploits used by intelligence agencies boosted not only cybercriminals activities but also other nation-state sponsored attackers. Every new exploit is adopted by targeted attackers now much faster than in 2016 and years before that, which makes efficient and reliable patch strategy critical to resist such threats. India is among countries that are developing very fast in technology, which opens opportunities for more cyber attacks on it’s users and infrastructure.” explains Mr. Vitaly Kamluk. As advanced threat actors continue to gain access to vulnerable development companies, back-door-ing of popular or regionally popular software will become an increasingly desirable attack vector. Mr. Denis Legezo (Security Researcher, Kaspersky Lab) spoke in detail about the security landscape against high profile targets in India. “Based on Kaspersky Security Network, in Novem-ber 2017 alone, we see an infection rate of 30.8% within the country,” said Mr. Denis Legezo.Mr. Shrenik Bhayani closed the power-packed day with a vote of thanks, mentioning how the coming together of key decision makers in one room, will pave the way forward for India. Said Mr. Shrenik Bhayani, “It was one of the most important days for India, as she prepares to face the challenges of tomorrow. Kaspersky is thrilled to partner with ASSOCHAM for the Cyber Resilience Summit. Kaspersky’s researchers have flown in from all over the world, to enrich us on how the world is battling the cyber security war and how India can prepare for the same. We feel extremely privileged to share the dais with top government officials and industry leaders. Kaspersky Lab is honored to con-tribute with its experience, knowledge and infra-structure to propel India’s position in being cyber safe!”

Program on Foundations of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning from IIIT-HYDERABAD gets massive response

IIIT-Hyderabad’s Foundations of Artificial Intel-ligence and Machine Learning, a new state-of-the-art program for technology professionals announced four weeks ago, has received a mas-sive response. 250 software professionals, with a good range of industry experience, have joined the first batch. The program is slated to start at IIIT-Hyderabad’s Machine Learning Laboratory beginning January 2018, and will be executed in association with TalentSprint. Registering the response to the first batch, IIIT-Hyderbad and TalentSprint announced that enrolment for a second concurrent batch has begun. The focus this time around is to get more women professionals on board as an overall ini-tiative to promote diversity in technology compa-nies. To this end, special scholarships for women professionals are being offered by the organizers of the program.

According to Dr. P.J. Narayanan, Director, IIIT-Hyderabad, “Digital Transformation is an exis-tential imperative that enterprises have embarked upon in recent years. Awareness of current tech-nology trends and development methodologies are needed to be relevant to today’s enterprise IT environments. AI systems that were until recently largely in academic research labs have suddenly moved into the mainstream. Added to this, over the past year, is the rapid emergence of AI/ML-based solutions in the mainstream enterprise space.”Dr.Santanu Paul, Co-Founder and CEO of Tal-entSprint said, “The entire narrative in the tech-nology space has changed. AI/ML capabilities amongst working professionals has become a key requirement for career progression and profes-sional relevance. What is interesting is that we have already seen enrolments from across fifty companies, cutting across products, services, and start-up sectors. These are professionals who want to make an immediate impact in their current roles with AI/ML solutions. This is a clear indicator that the market is ready for high-end programs.”

Young Bureaucrat Driving Change with innovation

Living the Smart Industry Revolution Today

2009 Batch IAS office Mr, Saurabh Kumar who is former IIT, Powai student is taking innovation to field. Presently working as collector of Dan-tewada district which is in LWE effected area of Chhattisgarh region has came up with an initia-tive to support Tribals of his district. With Hon.

“Smart Industry” isn’t a random label one can just throw around, but the current industrial revolution brought upon by a sophisticated and precise set of technologies that are changing man’s relation to manufacturing. Industry 4.0, which we will use interchangeably with “Smart Industry,” was coined in early 2010 as the German government tried to make fac-tories smarter by bringing connected technol-ogies and manufacturing together. Hence, the Working Group on Industry 4.0, which offers recommendations to German leaders on how to bring this new industrial age, has formalized the framework of this new step in the evolution of manufacturing. The name “Industry 4.0” shows it’s the fourth Industrial Revolution. The first one took place between 1760 and 1840 with the advent of mechanization, as well as the use of chemical manufacturing, water power, and steam. Then came batch production between 1870 and 1914, which is was the second Industrial Rev-olution. During that time, assembly lines and the use of electricity completely changed how plants operated. Finally, the third revolution took place during the 20th century, when com-puting systems and automation replaced man-power.

PM of India calling for sweet revolution this young IAS officer has gone a step further and developed a mobile Honey processing unit. The aim of this innovative idea is to help 10,000 tri-bals in the region to take advantage of technol-ogy and gain value for their honey. This mobile

In their paper entitled Design Principles for Industrie 4.0 Scenarios, German scholars Her-mann, Pentek, and Otto define the four pillars of the smart industry: Technical assistance, information transparency, interconnection, and decentralized decisions. As we sat down with Vipin Bothra, Market Development Director at ST, the one thing that became apparent is that the company behind this blog is the only one in the world to offer leading solutions for all four of these principles. That means it can bring comprehensive innovations that work together in the most optimized and efficient way possi-ble to realize the potential of this new revolu-tion.Smart Industry: Technical Assistance and Infor-mation Transparency - Here’s a quick overview of these four foundational concepts:· Technical assistance means workers are no longer just operators but use machines to make critical decisions. For instance, mobile devices carry information that shape judgment calls and new systems make all tasks safer. Informa-tion visualization is a significant component of this principle, and ST offers multiple devel-opment tools to help engineers build the apps they need to make technical assistance a reality.

· Information transparency is the ability to bring all the elements of a smart plant together to substantially increase efficiency, thanks to the use of new models. It’s basically where the virtual and the physical world meet. The con-sequence of this increase in efficiency is an augmentation in productivity and a decrease in energy costs. On top of enabling information transparency, ST makes it possible to com-pound those energy savings through low-power solutions, such as better motor-control systems or SiC components, among others.Smart Industry: Interconnection and Decentral-ized Decisions· Interconnection is what most people mean when they talk about IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) or Smart Industry. However, as we’ve seen, the Industry 4.0 is so much more than that. This principle signifies that all the sen-sors, devices, machines, and people are able to interact with one another by using secure and ubiquitous communication protocols that facilitate the exchange of information. ST has a crucial role in this domain because it offers fantastic software libraries to take advantage of powerful transceivers, and it is a major partner in most of the consortiums that define those protocols’ specifications.· Decentralized decisions are the eye-catch-ing aspects of this revolution because this prin-ciple moves the intelligence of the plant out of a centralized system to peripheral nodes. Thanks to low-power microcontrollers (MCU) offering new levels of horsepower, like the STM32 and STM8, more devices can make crit-ical decisions, monitor activities and function autonomously. This increases efficiency and ensures the consequences of a failure are not as problematic since the rest of the plant is less affected, if at all.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

GST will definitely help the country grow faster over the next few months

Tally is a big name after GST in the country today when it comes to business, how do you feel about this?Overall we definitely believe that the imple-mentation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) was long due for the country. While there have been initial troubles, the new tax regime will benefit both businesses and consumers in the medium to long term. Since the announcement of GST, we have spent several months assisting busi-nesses to transition into the GST era. In the earlier months of GST introduction, there was uncertainty due to lack of awareness and edu-cation.Through our collective and dedicated efforts, we physically reached out to over 10 lakh busi-nesses to educate them on the new law and how it will affect their businesses. In addition, we have reached out to over 50 lakh businesses through our blog and webinars. These aware-ness efforts will continue being one of the focus areas over the next few months till the country has transitioned successfully. Can you reflect on some of the moments of Tally at the time of beginning by Bharat Goenka to the present you, how do you feel about the change?I think a few things have remained constant and a few things have changed. The desire to help build technologies that drive growth for small and medium businesses has been constant and this forms the backbone of everything we do as a company. Many defining moments of my grandfather’s interactions with my father, the founders of the business have shaped this con-stant focus. The first few product demos, the first few customers are milestones that have all been extremely memorable. In the last few years, the business has expanded to include sev-eral lakh customers and thousand partners who are part of the Tally family. Continuing our focus on the core beliefs, we still feel that there is still lot that can be done to help small and medium businesses grow and that focus will continue in all that we do.We have been listening in the IT hardware mar-ket that the sales have gone down drastically. Do you think it’s because of GST implementa-tion or demonetization or the market moved to online players?Honestly, we are not entirely clear about the reason and won’t be the right people to talk to about the decrease in sales. What is your idea on the method Government used to implement GST? Being practical and looking to the problems faced by the small businessmen, is there any need to change the

filing methods? We feel a lot of simplification can be brought into the filing methods for the small business-man. The struggles have been hard for many of us and we have made several recommendations that can help the government focus on the basic

premise of the GST return filing process which is invoice matching. The country is transforming from cash business to electronic payment business, Will GST help the country to transform economy?GST will definitely help the country grow faster over the next few months. We see 3 key benefits arising out of GST: (1) Reduced tax on tax due to the ‘one nation one tax’ concept that GST is based on. (2) Simpler trade across state bound-aries, and (3) Greater transparency in return fil-ing and auditing due to the concept of invoice matching.

The focus of the government must be to first implement GST correctly for the existing tax payer base, and only then focus on expanding this base. Currently, simplifications in the pro-cess are needed to bring this vision alive, and with every council meeting it seems like the government is clear with their intent about its implementation. The way Tally is growing is remarkable, there is a big change in the partners network of tally, can you brief us what is the method your com-pany has implemented to satisfy the channel business? How many partners have grown this year after GST was implemented, can you put some statistics on your entire business model? The partner network is a clear and an important focus for us as we do our business through our partners only. Over the years, we have built a partner model that works for us and also allows the partners to grow. We have two types of partners, a Certified Partner and an Associate Partner. The Certified Partners helps us ensure a specific service level and quality for our custom-ers, and the Associate Partners help us reach first time customers who were unaware of the potential to grow with the Tally license. In order to serve this network effectively, we work with Distributors and a new type of partner called the Tally Xcelerator. Tally Xcelerator was intro-duced recently and focuses on helping the Cer-tified Partners grow their business by acting like mentors and coaches. With the introduction of GST, every partner in the Tally ecosystem has seen unprecedented growth in their business.I have been in touch with many Tally users that they have bought the pack but finding difficult to implement, do you have any team which looks after this? Do you give this service or train the user once the tally is purchased? How do you track this? For customers who had purchased the software in the months of July, August and September, this was an area of concern that came to light. We had focused on transitioning our existing customer base to GST and in the process many new customers faced problems. Tally Care is our dedicated team that addresses all queries and concerns related to the software. Since then, we have increased Tally Care capacity to over 3 times of what we had in July, and are actively reaching out to our customers to ensure that they are happy with the Tally experience. If they haven’t had a good experience, I would strongly encourage them to visit our help.tallysolutions.com website and if they need assistance they can call our Tally Care toll free line at 1800-200-8859.

INTERVIEWS

Reasserting The Importance Of ‘I’ In A CIODigital trans-formation, new technologies and increased need for C-level e n g a g e m e n t have forced CIOs to evolve. In this Essential Guide, explore

the changing role of the CIO and strategies to adapt to the digital marketplace. ustires. It is the time where the I in the word CIO is getting prominence across the indIn an exclusive chat with Cell IT, Amit Phadke, CTO, Global Software Company, tells CELL IT, his views on the evolving trends in the digital landscape. Edited excerpts. What is your view on IT using technology is directly involving in the P&L and not just a support role?Largely IT using technology is directly involved in P&L irrespective of the industry or domain. IT is no more looked at as back-end function. Across various industries technology is looked as business enabler or partner. IT works closely with business heads and stake holders to meet organization goals. IT ensures effective application of technology to redefine and smoothen the processes; increase productivity and lower cost in the organizations. In the current age of digitization it is important that companies push the boundaries of generally accepted business and IT roles. What do you think, the role of Indian CIOs will be evolving in the coming years?Corporate IT is on verge of groundbreaking trans-formation wherein a different IT-Business partner-ship model is evolving. More often each business unit devises its own strategy and makes its own decision including technologies that it needs to take its products or services to customer. As a result each business unit will increasingly determine its own technology strategy too. Corporate IT will be required to provide overall strategic guidance, sup-port and deliver solutions, act more as integrator when business choose to adopt some technology and business process. This new partnership model

is evolving forcing IT departments to be strategic partners. CIOs are learning to provide services in such environment with focus in deriving optimum business value from IT. CIOs work with these busi-ness units to define what is absolute necessary and what is nice to have. CIOs are engaged on conver-sations where there is a shift of focus from cost and service levels to value creation in form of innovation and competitive advantage. In short CIOs will con-centrate on helping the entire company develop the analytical sophistication needed to make the most of the rapid digitization in every aspect of business — effectively reasserting the importance of the “I” in CIO.Many research agencies suggest that IT teams should work like a start-up enterprise within their organization having the start-up approach in bud-get, technology and so on. What is your take on that?Thinking like start-up may not fit every organiza-tion. There are systems & processes which are built over years. There are concrete business plans which are long term. So budget and technology approach should consider this aspect when drawing the plan. How does a role of a CIO heading a tech company serving logistical companies is different from the role of a CIO a tech company serving other indus-tries?Every CIO role depends on the industry their com-pany is part of. Domain expertise matters when drawing business solutions. Overall it is a good challenge for CIO in a tech company as everyone from trainee to the top management is tech savvy and demands are ever increasing aligned with latest technology trend. CIOs are expected to be techno-logically updated at a comparatively much faster pace than other employees of non-tech companies. How tech-savvy is logistics/ travel companies? How should a CIO of a company that provides tech to them should have enough? As said before all industries today are extremely tech savvy. As technology becomes more and more pervasive across industries and functions, most companies are racing to become technology inno-vators in their segment. Logistics and travel com-

panies or service providers to these verticals are no different. Everyone is up the curve focusing on block-chain, artificial intelligence (AI), Robotics, IoT and machine learning. Companies are investing on these technologies to keep themselves in compe-tition, generate new revenues and finding better ways of serving customers.According to many, the role of a CIO will be inclined towards a profit-making and not cost-cutting. How you see this trend?I agree that the trend has already changed wherein CIOs are not managing IT which was treated as a cost center. IT is a business partner in almost every field and drives business focusing on revenue streams, maximize returns through customer ser-vice or touch points, improve efficiency and much more. There is a debate that AI and robotics would replace human beings. It is a hard fact that mundane work will be done more efficiently and precisely by ana-lytical and robotic technologies. But I feel this is a compliment to what humans do. So one should har-ness maximum out of these technologies and stay ahead of curve rather than looking it as a threat. There is so much of data lying out that can be used in various ways to transform businesses. How you see Indian enterprises going 100% digital? How you see the role of Chief Digital Officer?Indian enterprises have started their journey 2-3 years back towards digital transformation and there is a long way to go. I guess next 3-4 years will be interesting to watch in terms of technology adop-tion by these enterprises to go 100% digital. Going digital is not necessarily adopting latest technol-ogies to harness so called black gold (data) which every organization holds. It is about treating this data as an asset; utilizing this information for pro-cessing, analysis, mining and information trading. CDO is expected to lead the enterprise focusing around vision and strategy, people and culture, process and governance, technology capabilities and disruption. In short it is about digital transfor-mation maturity improvement that is to be worked upon.
