The Bolshevik Revolution

World War I demonstrated czarist corruption andineff iciency, and only patriotism held the poorlyequipped army together for a time

Disorders broke out in Petrograd (renamedLeningrad and now St. Petersburg) in March1917, and defection of the Petrograd garrisonlaunched the revolution. Nicholas II was forced to

abdicate on March 15, 1917, and he and his f amily were killed by revolutionaries on July 16,1918.

In 1914 the Russian Army was the largest army in theworld. However, Russia's poor roads and railways madethe effective deployment of these soldiers diff icult.

The Russian Army Air Service (RAAS) was established in

1912 and two years later owned 360 Aircrafts and 16Airships. This made the RAAS the largest airforce in theworld.

In 1914 the Russian Navy had 4 battleships, 10 cruisers,21 destroyers, 11 submarines and 50 torpedo boats.
