The Commodore's Message
Spring is here, or so it would seem.... the leaves are sprouting on the trees, flowers are blooming but we are still contending with cold winds. But many are down working on their boats... getting ready for the prawnathon... I understand at least 7 boats are planning the Easter weekend trip, which is great. Unfortunately, I will be on the grid sometime that weekend... and at present there is no power in my boat... the engine is in refit... it is what Joe Wright calls a true sailboat..... but... at the same time....... he has a power boat... no mast and no main sail!!!!! tsk! tsk! We are hoping for a lot of participation at Gorge Harbour this year, and hopefully a good race within the Harbour itself to really get this season going!!!!... and then many wonderful cruises to follow. We won't mention that the B.C. Government has dropped their plans to charge us for anchoring in the marine parks!!!!... but watch those fees at the Government wharves!!! Glen Gresdal

Sailing Reflections from Brian
Our Club Album and many of our family albums have pictures of the rafts of boats that joined our many successful Yacht Club cruises. The annual Schedule of Events included cruises planned
for every long (holiday) weekend from Easter to Thanksgiving. Our yachties often braved uncertain weather, leaving on Friday nights or Saturday morning to many of our favorite anchorages within reasonable traveling distances. Destinations usually included Cortes Bay, Gorge Harbour, Von Donop Inlet, Tenedos Bay, Prideaux Haven, Roscoe Bay, Teakerne Arm, Isabel Bay, Grace Harbour, and as far as Walsh Cove.
The rafts of participants would number from as few as two vessels, too as many as 26 celebrating the holiday weekend. Aboard the boats were crews made up of couples, families with kids and pets, and often visiting relatives and friends were invited along. One well-attended event was the Easter Cruise to Von Donop Inlet back in about 1988. More than a dozen cruisers joined the raft on a beautiful spring weekend that saw the crews participate in an Easter Egg Hunt, hikes to Squirrel Cove, and lots of dinghying about the sheltered anchorage. Boat-to-boat socializing carried on all day, and at shoreside bonfires under starlit skies. We enjoyed the company of the crews that joined us from Campbell River, Oyster River, Browns Bay, and Comox. The Campbell River Yacht Club became renowned for it's successful cruises - not for their ambitious and far-reaching explorations, but the frequency (usually more than nine cruises per year) and reasonable traveling distances. Of course, few clubs anywhere in the world could boast of such a choice of accessible and beautiful safe anchorages within a day's travel. The cruises often served as an introduction to new sailors and newcomers to our area where they could travel with our group of experienced local cruisers and establish their favorite destinations to visit later on their own. Temporary Insanity II – Uses way to much gas for my liking, but I like the speedy attitude. Remember to always secure your boat when leaving it unattended!
