BSC MEMBERSHIP T-SHIRTS

The BSC Membership T-shirts are almost here, for those members that paid their membership July 2018 through March 29, 2019. We will distribute the new T-shirts beginning Tuesday, April 16, 2019, after 11am. Thank you for your patience and support to Bakersfield Senior Center.

Inglewood Senior Center They also cautioned us to know the limitations of workers that would be trained to use any of the services or equipment being placed in the new facility. Communicate, communicate with stakeholders. Let the public in on what you’re doing within the community, and stay with your talking points or “case of sup-port.” USE CONSULTANTS! When planning think of REV-ENUE SOURCES OR REVENUE STREAMS of making money come to your facility. For Inglewood Senior Center, they decided to allow public (that would be attending the sport-ing events near by) to use their parking lot, but the public would not have access to their building. So they placed parking

MEETINGS March 14, 2019 - spoke with Mayor Goh concerning March for Meals at BSC, she was un-available due to meetings in Sacramento with Governor Gavin Newsom, she did advise me she would like to participate in our next Fish Fry at the center.

March 15, 2019 - Lilli Parker, Executive Director of BSC and Jamal Powell, Senior Project De-signer/Owner of Designs For His Glory traveled to Inglewood Se-nior Center, in Inglewood Cali-fornia to meet with Harjinder Singh, Deputy to the City Man-ager, and Sabrina Barnes, Direc-tor of Parks, Recreation & Com-munity Services. The discussion was centered around Design build or Design Bid, they provid-ed the names of the Construction Manager and contractors that were involved with the new con-struction. They suggest when we present our ideas and plans to the City, County, potential fun-ders and philanthropist to use a model and not just schematics, so that everyone involved can conceptualize every detail and its affects - like windows, and land-scape how will you keep them up in 3-5 years. After the meeting we took a tour of the new facility and discussed the most current changes being made since com-pletion of construction of the fa-cility.

paying stations in certain locations on their property that would generate revenue to the senior center. They used Section 108 for planning not for construction. Section 108 offers state and local governments the ability to transform a small portion of their  Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)  funds into federally guaranteed loans large enough to pursue physical and economic revitalization projects capable of revitalizing entire neighborhoods. Such public investment is often needed to inspire private economic activi-ty, providing the initial resources or simply the confidence that private firms and individuals may need to invest in distressed areas. ***This may be an option for BSC since we receive CDBG HUD funding. ***

March 26, 2019 - Executive Director met with Councilman Willie Rivera, Ward 1, to discuss property owned by the City of Bakersfield, and BSC’s vision of rebuilding or refurbishing our existing facility. I advised Councilman Rivera, that we have had discussions with our seniors, and that I had a town hall meeting to collect in-formation from them on their current usage of our facility, and programs and services they would like to see incorporated into a future fa-cility, as well as visited the Inglewood Senior Center on two occasions collecting additional information and data.

I did ask if we could meet with Supervisor Perez to discuss ways of collaborating in making BSC more 21st century and green, he said, he would reach out to her for a meeting. I even suggested BSC move to a new location, but then he stated, BSC has made an impact within the community and to the seniors that currently attend from the area. So why would you move? That was the end of that conversation.

March 28, 2019 City of Bakersfield Draft Ac-tion Plan Meeting - 1015 Baker Street - for the Target Date June 30, 2020 BSC will re-ceive through Public Services $90,000. Goals Supported - Public Facilities and Services for Special Needs. Needs Addressed - Improve/Ex-pand Public Facility & Services Special Needs. Planned Activities - Operation & Maintenance for Senior Center located at 530 4th Street.

Liberty High School - Student Volunteers April 4, 2019, BSC Cardio and Tai Chi classes have been asked to dance at Liberty High School Senior Class Rally. Approximately 25 of the class members have signed up to attend along with some supporters.

April 12, 2019, the senior students will spend about 3 hours at BSC beautifying several areas of the center including the front flower beds, and the Fountain area at the entrance of the Dining Hall. I think this will look great for the Car Show.

Approximately 55 students before Spring ar-rived at the center to beautify our curb ap-peal, and it looks beautiful. Thank you

FINANCIALS BSC will be coming to a close of the Fiscal Year 2018/2019 on June 30, 2019. At the City of Bakersfield Action Planning meeting it was announced the funding for 2019/2020 would not be released until approximately Decem-ber 2019. This means we will not receive July 2019 funds of $7500, until some time in December.. OUCH!

• The Financial Committee and the board should strategize before the next fiscal year to solicit funding that will continue to sustain BSC.

• Funders, Philanthropist, Large Corpora-tions need to be approached by the board to partner with BSC as we maneuver through this season.

BSC received $300 to assist with Strategic Planning Training.

Thank you Janet Ford-Shell for your gen-erous personal donation in support of Board training for ensuring the Center’s continuous growth. Thank you Mr. Bernie Jennings for your continuous monthly giving for the past 5 years while I’ve been Executive Direc-tor.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

The 2018 Subaru Share the Love Funding award $9,610.55 will arrive in approximately 3 weeks from now.

Submitted to Board of Directors, April 3, 2019 for the April 4, 2019 Board meeting.
