PLBA WOMEN Alan Briggs is the Director of Frontline Church Planting in Colorado Springs. He is also the Multiplying Pastor of Vanguard Church. He has recently published a book entitled Staying is the New Going, Choosing to Love Where God Places You. The premise of the book is “make a difference right where you are”...wherever God places you. I have read some very enlightening thoughts from the book. For example, “The gospel isn’t something to outsource to overseas missionar-ies.” He says, “the gospel is God’s gift to the world and expressly to your neighborhood, your schools and your city.” It is important for all of us who serve in one of our local churches to see ourselves as “stay at home” missionaries. We need to bloom where we have been planted and stay planted long enough to bloom. When the children of Israel were about to go into Babylonian captivity, God instructed them through His prophet. “Thus says the Lord of host...build houses and live in them; and plant gardens and eat their produce...Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you...and pray to the Lord on its behalf; for in its welfare you will have welfare” (Jeremiah 29:4-7). Perhaps your ministry and the ministry of your church will be greatly enhanced if you simply prayed for the spiritual welfare of your community, town or city. And make a commitment to stay the course even when the course gets rocky, people become dissatisfied and money runs low. God always has and always will honor our faithfulness. So next time you think about throwing in the towel or moving to a better place just remember, “staying is the new going.”

“SAVED AND SECURE” I Peter 1:3-5

In these verses, the apostle communicated two very important doctrines: (1) the doctrine of SALVATION (v. 3 “born again”), and (2) the doctrine of SECURITY (v. 5 “who are protected”). Let’s look closely at these two doctrines and consider being “SAVED and SECURE.” I. We can BE SAVED (v.v. 3-4) ANAGENAS, “has begotten us again” (KJV), “has given us new birth” (NIV), “has caused us to be born again” (NASB). This verse is supported by FOUR PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES which give us FOUR ASPECTS OF OUR SALVATION: A. We are saved ACCORDING TO GOD’S MERCY (v. 3b) 1. Titus 3:5 2. Ephesians 2:4 B. We are saved UNTO A LIVING HOPE (v. 3c) 1. Romans 8:24 2. I Corinthians 15:19 3. I Peter 3:15 C. We are saved BY CHRIST’S RESURRECTION (v. 3d) 1. I Corinthians 15:20 2. Romans 6:4 D. We are saved FOR AN ETERNAL INHERITANCE (v. 3e) 1. It is IMPERISHABLE (v. 4a) 2. It is UNDEFILED (v. 4b) 3. It is UNENDING (v. 4c) 4. It is RESERVED (v. 4d) II. WE CAN BE SECURE (v.5) FRURUMENDS, “to be guarded or kept,” “shielded” (NIV), “protected” (NASB). This verb, too, is supported by THREE PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES giving THREE aspects of our security: A. We are secured BY THE POWER OF GOD (v. 5b) 1. Romans 1:16 2. Ephesians 3:20 B. We are secured THROUGH FAITH IN GOD (v. 5c) 1. I Peter 1:9 2. II Corinthians 5:7 C. We are secured FOR A COMPLETE SALVATION (v. 5c) 1. Philippians 1:6 2. Hebrews 7:25

YOU CAN BE SAVED...YOU CAN BE SECURE...ARE YOU? Encouragingly Yours, Russell Cook

It Might Preach!

A Nugget From My Spiritual Journey... Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up taking piano lessons and have served as a church musician for almost 60 years. I re-member back when churches began to be introduced to "choruses" instead of "just hymns." I have always been involved in accompanying or singing both styles for most of that time. However, when Life becomes, shall we say, challenging, it is the words to those familiar hymns that come to me readily in my time(s) of need. Our daughter is currently experiencing great health needs. Many additional circumstances of her life make it seem like there are insurmountable obstacles all around. Yet, both despite and because of multiple circumstances that are seem-ingly impossible to navigate, our family is walking through this time with unbeliev-able peace, although we cannot see the future at all in any of this! Step by step, God is at work, unfolding His plan and giving each one of us wisdom in how to be available to help her. He is making provisions we could not have foreseen and is bringing people into our lives who are not only good resources but who are also great encouragers. What does that have to do with music? Because much of what we believe from the Bible as a Christian family has been so beautifully expressed in hymns that are also implanted in our hearts. As we have been maneuvering through the logistics and emotions of it all, the words to these hymns are ringing true...

"Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine...Oh what a foretaste of glory divine..."

"Trust and Obey...For there's no other way to be happy in Jesus than to trust and obey..."

"Great Is Thy Faithfulness...Oh God my Father...Morning by morning, new mer-cies I see...All I have needed Thy hand hath provided..."

"No, Never Alone, No Never Alone...He promised never to leave me alone...."

“Because He Lives…I can face tomorrow…Because He lives all fear is gone…Because I know He holds the future…And life is worth the living just because He lives.”

{P.S. Yes, we would love to have your prayers!}

October is PASTOR APPRECIATION Month All across our convention and in many other denominations, churches will observe “Pastor Appreciation” during the month of October. There are many ways this can be done. The following are some recommendations made in other churches:

(1) Designate a certain Sunday to have a big public recognition of the Pastor, Ministry Staff and their spouses. Present each of them with a nice gift.

(2) Receive a love offering to be presented to the Pastor at a special service. (3) Offer to send the Pastor and his wife on an “all expense paid trip” to a nice bed

and breakfast or resort... or cruise... or ? (4) Discover from family, friends or associates what he really has need of and meet

that need during the month of October (i.e. auto repairs or replacement, furniture, computer, books, groceries, etc.)

(5) Recommend a raise in salary and benefits for the Pastor. (Most Pastors in SBC and especially BGCO churches are grossly underpaid.)

These are merely suggestions. Most Pastors will never ask for themselves (and that is as it should be), but the Bible says, “The elders (i.e. Pastors) who rule well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching” (I Timothy 5:17).
