Exercise KEY RESOLVE/FOAL EAGLE ‘09
Experiences of the 1st Area Medical Laboratory In Korea
SSG Edward Loudenclos IV
Agenda
• Goals for Deployment• Preparation for Deployment• Arrival and Setup• Testing and Interoperability• Teardown and Departure• Challenges• Successes• Questions?
GOALS FOR DEPLOYMENT
Goals for Deployment• 1st Deployment of an AML unit overseas since OIF in
2003• Can an AML even Deploy?
– Too few people for too much equipment?• Will the tactical and technical equipment survive
movement?– Equipment sensitivity, age, and condition
• Can we test accurately in a Field Environment?• Validate testing Protocols and Procedures• To test function and interoperation with similar
organizations: - CBRNE Analytical and Remediation Activity (CARA) Laboratory - Republic of Korea Chemical, Biological, Radiological Defense Command (ROK CBRD CMD)
PREPARATION FOR DEPLOYMENT
Preparation for Deployment
• Define the Mission– To detect and identify biological and chemical
agents/toxins.– Train and work with similar lab units (CARA and ROK
CBRD CMD) in a field deployed environment
• Determine Personnel Requirement– 12 total
– 3 HQ (LTC Pell, SGM Krueger, SSG Jaramillo)– 5 Chem (MAJ Moser, SSG Lynn-Carswell, SGT Barnes, SGT
Tate, SPC Crowfoot)– 4 Bio (CPT Pierson, SSG Loudenclos, SGT Harris, SPC
Washington)
Preparation for Deployment cont.
• Identify Equipment Requirement– TEMPER and ISO Shelters– Power Generation Equipment– Sample Receiving Equipment– 3rd Squad (GS/MS)– 4th Squad (PCR and ECL)
• Coordination of Movement– Line-haul– Movement by SEA!!!– HAZMAT and Temperature considerations
Preparation for Deployment cont.
• Coordination of Support in Korea– Housing– Field Site Location– Commo– Food– Fuel– Equipment Support– Reach-back ability
