Monday 15th June

Prime Cattle to 209ppk and £1447 Barren Cows to 161ppk and £1396

Cull Bulls to 125ppk and £1429

A further good entry of cattle on Monday saw prime top at 209ppk (£1313) for a well bred and covered 630kg Charolais

steer (20m) from Tom and Emma Wotton of Moretonhampstead with an older (28m) Charolais bullock off the same farm

reaching 203ppk and a cracking 708kg Limousin steer (21m) drawing 205ppk and realising a decent £1447. British Blue

heifers (21m) from Phillip Dennis of North Tawton topped at 208ppk followed by more well finished heifers from Bottor

Rock Farms, Hennock who saw a 604kg Blonde fetch 205ppk and £1235 whilst a 632kg Charolais (24m) from Barry Mildon

and family of Thorverton also eased to 205ppk (£1292) and a 576kg Charolais heifer (25m) from Paul Burrow of Wiggaton

took home 204ppk and £1172. A grand 678kg Limousin steer (23m) from Joe Stoneman and family of Sampford Courtenay

peeked at 206ppk and £1393 with a strong 636kg Bazadaise steer (25m) from Bottor Rock Farms seeing 203ppk and £1287

and a smart, young (18m) South Devon steer reached 202ppk for RJ Macbean & Sons, Plymstock. The barren cow section

was headed by an impressive run of South Devon’s from JP Matthews & Son of Torpoint which topped at 161ppk and £1396

whilst a super Stabiliser cow from TJ Turner & Son, Pocombe Bridge reached 137ppk and £1130. A good bodied Blonde

barrener from Phillip Dennis reached 134ppk closely followed by Simmentals at 132ppk for J Norman and Son of

Thorverton and 130ppk and £1129 for Paul Rowden of Blackawton. A massive 1148kg Charolais cull Bull from Paul Burrow

drew 125ppk and realised £1429.

Spring Lambs to £110.50 & 223ppk Prime Hoggs to £96.50 & 170ppk Cull Ewes to £93.00 & Rams to £116

A smaller entry of 1617 spring lambs were as expected trading at a lower

level for all classes but especially for the lighter and leaner sorts.

Overweights were less effected with 13 pens selling into three figures to

a top of £110.50 for 60kgs from Graham Sercombe of Cheriton Bishop

followed closely at £110 by both Alan & Gerry Luscombe of Bickington

with 59kgs and Nick & Margaret Lugger of Modbury with 55kgs as Mrs

Leach of Black Dog had a 53kg lambs at £105.50 and LG Pincombe of

Mariansleigh made £105.20 of a pen of 54kgs. 48-50kg lambs selling to

a top of £103.50 (216ppk) for Gavin Abraham of Dartmouth, £103 for

Richard Brayley of Jacobstowe, £102 again for Graham Sercombe,

£101.50 for James Palmer of Halwell and £100 again for Alan & Gerry

Luscombe. Smart 47kg lambs to £100 again for Nick & Margaret Lugger

and £98 for John & Diane Vooght of Dunsford with the best pen of 46kg

lambs selling at £96.50 for Keith Rowell of Crockernwell. 45kg lambs

to £93.80 for Phillip Rowell of Crockernwell, £93.20 for Stockadon

Farm Partners of Cheriton Fitzpaine and £92.50 for John Simmons of

Poltimore. Some flashy 44kg lambs saw Mrs Leach claim £96.50

(219ppk) closely followed by Richard Quantick of Teigngrace, £93 again for Richard Brayley and £92 for Torbay Coast &

Countryside. Best per kilo of 223ppk went to Jamie Acton of Cheriton Fitzpaine with smart 42kg lambs making £93.50 as

41kgs sold to £86 for the Morgan family of Goveton and 40kgs to £84 for Barry Mildon & family of Cadbury. Lighter lambs

were headed by Tom, Megan & Ivy Curtis of Cadeleigh with a trio of shapely 37kg Beltex lambs that made 222ppk or £82

whilst best of the 39kgs sold to £80 for John Quick of Coldridge. SQQ was 16 pence less at 200ppk.

Hoggs to £96.50 for a 59kg smart sort from MW Shergold of Totnes and £80 for CJ & KI Drake of Crockernwell as top per

kilo of 170ppk was achieved for 35kg sorts from Francis Farms of Doddiscombsleigh. Mature sheep sold to £77.50 for

Devon Farming Ltd of Bratton Fleming, £73 for Robert Dadd of Bovey Tracey and £70 for Andrew & Michaela Rodd of

Lapford.

A similar sized entry of 833 cull sheep varied in quality but were an overall similar trade to last week. The quality was in

the rams with Texel rams selling to £116 & £110 for Ben Roberts of Bradninch, £114 for Adrian & Julie Rich of Halwell

and £95 for Ross & Helen May of Netherexe. Best of the ewes saw pens of crossbred ewes sell to £93 & £88 for Richard

Berry of Kenn, £92 for Richard Yabsley of Dartmouth, £87.50 for both the Palk family of Paignton and Mary Curtis of

Cadeleigh as four vendors reached £87 of their best. Mules often late £60’s and early £70’s selling to a top of £74.50 for

Tony Pickard of South Molton and hill ewes looking as dear as ever with Swales to £55 & £51 for penfuls from David &

Justine Colton of Princetown. The overall average was within a pound of last week at £67.

Another quiet Monday in the sheep pens with 691 prime lambs selling at recent levels with a top of £86 for Texel x

50kg lambs from David Goss of Littlehempston who also had 51kg Charollais at £83.50 and smart 47kg continentals at

£83 (177ppk). Overweights to £85 for AJ Carter of Dawlish and £81.50 for Paul West of Holbeton. Other 50-52kg

lambs selling at £85 for Tripp Bros & Sons of Dunsford £84.20 for Tony Pickard of South Molton, £82.80 for Ken

Chapple of Oakford and £82.50 for RD Middleton & Son of Ashreigney. A trio of smart 47kg Beltex crosses from

Tracey Pike of Luppit sold at £82.50 (176ppk). 45kg Charollais lambs to £77 for Len Sharland of Tiverton and the same

price per head for 44kgs from Keith Milton of Pennymoor who also claimed top price per kilo when his two pens of

smart 41kg lambs rose to 180 & 178ppk or £73.80 & £72.80 respectively. A great line up of well finished light lambs

from 28 to 39kgs saw top per head of £66 achieved by both Blackaton Manor Farms of Widecombe with 39kg

Cheviots and also of 38kg Suffolk crosses from Abel Bros of Tavistock who also parted with 33kg Welsh lambs at

£56.20, 31kg hill lambs at £54, 30kgs at £53.20 (177ppk) and a large pen of 28kg Scotties at £48.20. Overall average is

just a penny better at 170ppk.

367 CULL EWES & 20 RAMS/WETHERS

A short entry of just under 400 cull sheep sold with a better feel to the trade as mule and other medium weight ewes

were noticeably dearer than seen in a long time. Best crossbred ewes to £90 for a pair of Black Texels from Tracey

Pike of Luppit, £89.50, £88.50 & £86 for penfuls of strong Suffolk crosses from Tom Yandle of Mamhead and £87 for

similar from Tim Whitley of Widecombe. Others £75 to £84 depending on breed, condition and weight. Best mules as

mentioned looking £6-£9 dearer on the week with two pens selling at £77.50 & £74.50 for Brad Simmons of

Thorndon Cross, £76.50 for Ellen Yandle of Mamhead and a meated run from Sam Ursell of Tedburn St Mary sold to

£76, £74.50, £73 & £72.50. Hill ewes fewer in number and often £30 to £40 with no real strength present and very

few lots sold under £25. Rams a touch stronger trade too with Brad Simmons also topping these with a weighty

Suffolk selling at £99 followed by AJ Carter with a Texel at £92.50 and B Moseley of Hittisleigh realised £89. All cull

sheep averaged £62, which is up £10 on the week, half of the lift is due to quality, the other half is the strength of

trade.

There is an exception to this levy if a vendor is deemed to have an epidemic of cysticercus-ovis or similar, but in this unlikely event the auctioneer will liaise with the vendor in question.
