Store Steers to £1440 Store Heifers to £1300

The excellent start to 2021 in the cattle section continued here at Exeter on Friday with many more taking

advantage and selling on the electric trade we have been seeing since the turn of the year. Store steers reach a

high of £1440 for a powerful looking red Limousin (20m) from David and Mark Risdon of Broadwoodkelly with

younger ones (16m) to £1275 for a trio of smart sorts from Des Gillbard of Cruwys Morchard whilst much later

born Limousin steers (13m) sold to a creditable £1235 for James Warren up from Penzance. A pen of four

striking British Blue bullocks (25m) from Nick and Shane Willis of Kennford eased to £1350 apiece with a couple

born six months later from David and Pip Luscombe of East Allington drawing £1200 a life, the latter also sold

the highest priced Hereford steer (23m) of the day for £1185. Best of the native breed steers saw £1280 for a Devon (21m) from Keith Andrews of Exeter followed by South Devon’s of the same age reaching £1260 for

John Hamlin of Newton Abbot, further natives to £1245 for the best Aberdeen Angus (22m) of that age on offer

from David and Pip Luscombe again with young (14m) Angus steers to a commendable £1115 for Ray Tratt of

Honiton. Very decent Simmental steers (18m) from Colin Burrough of Axminster easily reached to £1175

followed by a pen of three tidy Blonde bullocks born around the same time from Jon Vincent of Staddiscombe,

Plymouth which saw £1170 a life. The store heifers section was headed by David and Mark Risdon with a couple

of outstanding Limousin’s (21m) which both picked up £1300 a life whilst younger (15m) Limousin females

collected £1010 for Clive Timms and Family of Inwardleigh. A well turned out Devon heifer (27m) fetched £1130

for Richard Hill of Dunsford with Aberdeen Angus (16m) making £1090 for Ray Tratt again and a pair of smart

Charolais heifers (23m) sold well at £1080 for CT Holmes and Son of Kings Nympton. A bunch of five well

matched British Blue heifers (22m) drew £1080 apiece for David and Pip Luscombe whilst ones at (17m) saw

£1065 for Clive Timms and Family again. A neat South Devon heifer (22m) topped £1080 for Tony Hervin of

Umberleigh.

A pleasing entry of sixty Organic registered cattle met with plenty of interest and kicked off with a

consignment of smart suckler bred South Devon cross types (21m) from John Andrews of Wembury which rose

to £1120 for a bunch of four smart steers followed by four heifers of the same breed which sold well at £1060

apiece. A large entry of dairy bred Organic cattle from Phillip Hopper of Bude also saw decent money with his

Hereford steers (20m) making £960, younger Herefords (averaging 15m) drawing £800 for a pen of seven and

Aberdeen Angus bullocks (20m) reaching £975 ahead for four. A single Aberdeen Angus heifer (19m) saw £810

followed by a big bunch of nine Hereford’s (averaging 14m) which took home £690 all again from Phillip Hopper.

Please notify us of intended numbers by Thursday lunchtime if you are bringing store cattle on a Friday, we message over three hundred potential purchasers the day before the sale and the more we can advertise the more buyers we can attract. Another cracking entry of 165 Dairy Cattle at Exeter Livestock Centre saw a flying trade from start to finish! Buyers were

attracted from Wales, Staffordshire and over the South West with again a good number of buyers using the Online Bidding

system. A super quality entry of Fresh milk saw serious demand with 8 over £2000 to a top of £2150 three times for

Richard Kent of Surrey who consigned 12 Fresh non-pedigree Heifers with others to £2000, £1900 & £1850 and they

Son of Axminster who sold another heifer at £1700. A nice run of Heifers from Rodney, Jean & Paul Allin of Launceston

1700gns & 1600gns while a fourth calver sold at 1500gns as well as another three quartered Red & White fourth calver

selling to a flying trade at £1480. The majority of the cows were Dutch or German imports and there were many late in

their lactations and due throughout the spring but that didn’t affect the trade! The overall average for 70 head sold including

all faults was £1207. A super consignment of 30 Crossbred bulling heifers from Kingston Hill Farm of Oxford sold to a fast

trade topping at £840 for a smart group of Swedish Red x heifers with other groups to £820 & £800 and Brown Swiss x

Orphans to £54 Store Hoggs to £130 Grazing Ewes to £138 & Rams to £134 Double Couples to £275 & Singles to £185 Breeders to £136

Chris Hall of Blandford sold weaned pure Dorset orphans to £54 twice, £45 four times and £40 twice as Norman

Chanin of Thorverton claimed £41 for his younger sorts and Peter Vooght of South Brent made £40 of his young

pure Suffolk lamb. Majority of young lambs from £28 to £38 with smaller, frailer sorts upwards from £11. All 64

averaged £28.20.

**Reminder that lambs are to be at least a week old with dry navals and must have had their morning feed before

coming to market**

Half the number of previous week’s entries saw the 1101 store hoggs keep pace with the rising prime trade with

nine pens over £120 to a top of £130 & £125 for Eric Gillbard of Thorverton, £128 for Neil Hardy of Morchard

Road, £127.50 for Graham Hill of Wiggaton and £124 for Scott Hamlin of Rackenford. Short keep hoggs usually

all over £110 with medium term hoggs £98 to £115 depending on quality and breed. Longer term hoggs

surprisingly no dearer on the week and usually £75 to £88 with hill bred sorts from £65 up and only the very

plain or small hoggs and those with a fault less than that. All in together, one with another the average was £7

better on the week at £100.40.

Something for everyone and someone for everything amongst the 143 breeders with top price going to a pen of

four Swiss Valley black nose cross dry ewe hoggs from John Salmon of Newquay who also had Texel x ewe

hoggs at £126.50. In-lamb Dorset’s to £119 for Ryan Willett of Tavistock and £118 for Romney and Highlander

crosses from Steve Carpenter of Looe.

Another big entry of 263 grazing ewes and rams here on a Friday were dearer too with a top of £138 for a pair

of Texels from Emily Pearse of Colebrook, £134 for rams from both Jamie Acton of Cheriton Fitzpaine and

Nigel Tucker of Long Drag who had another at £111. Two lots realised £110 and a further 10 lots sold in excess

of £100. Overall average to include genuine lean grazers and several hill ewes stood at £82.02.

A near identical entry of couples were a pretty similar trade although the best doubles were a pound or two

dearer and broke the £90 per life barrier twice for the first time this year. Derek Cole of Bradninch sold 7

Dorset doubles at £275 (£91.67/life) whilst the Emmett family of Cullompton sold Suffolk crosses at £270 and

Romneys at £265 as well as a single at £180 (£90/life) only bettered by Liam Spry of Braunton who had a Dorset

at £185 (£92.50/life). The next notch back from the best would be a pound or two less on last week’s flyer when

these were all around the £80 per life, this week ranging from £74 to £80. Those second rate sorts were £63

to £73 and half a dozen third quality or faulty outfits were from £24 to £55 per life. Averages just back slightly

at £79.50 per life and £191 per outfit.

** Lambs must be a week old with dry navals before coming to market and their pens must be bedded with straw

please**
