68 CHRISTMAS SHOW LAMBS
A huge entry of 335 pigs saw a total of twenty-one buyers present with the biggest entry for our
Christmas Show for many years.
Yes, once again, Exeter saw the biggest entry of cull sows in any livestock in the UK this week! Five strong buyers on the
sows pushed the best to £130 for Messrs Martin of Haye Road, Cornwall whilst the pick of some lovely White sows
from Andrew Freemantle hit £128 (x2) and £127. Richard Dunning of Drewsteignton always sells quality and was well
rewarded today with his best also reaching £128. Richard Knox, Colin Gibbins and Chris Down all topped £120 with
their quality sows, while the best of the medium weight sows hit £106 for Timmy & Rupert Stockwell of Kingsbridge.
What a day and what a fantastic line up of first quality prime pigs with Nigel & Sandra Tope of Totnes reaching top slot
and the prizes with their first pen of 104kg pigs at £125 (x6) and second pen at £123. Richard Knox sold a double pen
of eleven heavyweights well at £121, whilst Messrs Peckmoor Farming made the long journey down from Crewkerne
with a load which saw a top call of £118. Richard & Vicky Gibbins produce some excellent prime pigs and this week was
no exception, their first pen of 99kg pigs hit £117 going to Tideford near Saltash, with others in pens of five and six at
£116 & £115 going to Bridport in Dorset. Mark Dallyn of West Buckland saw his trio hit £114 with plenty upwards of
the magical £100 landmark.
A really good entry of store pigs saw more interest with some buyers looking to purchase just two or three while
others are looking to fill sheds for the winter. Top call on the day was £40 on behalf of Lea Farming with a smart entry
of sixty coloured pigs, others to £35 from the same home. S Darley of South Molton saw his pen of five nice stores to
£29 and very young slip pigs reached £28 on behalf of Richard Simmonds of Witheridge who sold at Exeter for the very
first time.
My congratulations to all of the prize winners for the 2017 Exeter & District Christmas Show and thank you to
Steve Loveless for judging. We will continue to hold our pig sales every fortnight with our next sale on Friday
15th December and we continue right through the festive season with buyers wanting pigs on a regular basis.

High pressure continues to dominate the country bringing with it cold, but dry weather, very much
needed if you are currently busy in the lambing pens. That said, the forecast is suggesting northerly
winds for the weekend, could snow be a feature for December?
Commodity prices seem to be holding their own, with both barley and wheat prices remaining
strong. Straw prices seem to be one of the main talking points, providing positive vibes for the
arable farmers, yet a little more frustrating for the livestock farmers amongst you having to use
the stuff.
Onto Basic Payment Scheme matters and some good news for a change. As returning from work
on Friday the 1st of December I was pleasantly informed that the home farm had received the
annual Basic Payment Scheme income and furthermore throughout the weekend it was clear that
many clients had also received the required payment. If you haven’t received anything yet, don’t
panic, it is understood the RPA are aiming to make payments to at least 90% of BPS claimants
(around 77,400) by the 31st of December.
With regards to the size of the payment there is further good news here too. It is understood
payments for the 2017 claim year should be just under 5% higher than the 2016 claim period due
to a more beneficial conversion rate from the Euro to the Pound. An increase that will be a
welcome boost to farmers across the country.
Here at Exeter we are busy submitting full and final claims against one large utility company for
clients that have been affected by works on the electrical pylons leading from Plymouth to Exeter.
It’s worth mentioning that if you experience any damage or losses as a result of any utility company
entering your land to undertake improvements or repairs to apparatus you are entitled to claim
for the losses you have incurred.
