Store Steers to £1250 Heifers to £945
The traditional low pre-Christmas entry of store cattle
saw another fast trade for all on offer with many buyers
going home empty handed. Steers topped at a massive
£1250 for a grand South Devon (21m) from Barry
Mildon of Cadbury followed by a pair of smart but
younger (18m) Charolais bullocks out of the same
trailer which drew £1095 apiece. Quality stores from
David & Magdalena Luscombe of East Allington saw a
trio of British Blue steers (23m) ease to £1055 a life
whilst their pen of later born Blue’s and Fleckvieh
bullocks (21m) reached £950 and a couple of well
fleshed Blue heifers (20m & 26m) topped that section
at £945 each. A tremendous run of outwintered steers
(20m) from Tim Whitley off the tops of Widecombe in
the Moor drew plenty of interest and peaked at £905
for a pen of three Charolais crossbreds and £865 for a
pair of South Devon’s whilst a young (18m) Limousin steer took home £835 for Sam Walker of Otterton.
As smaller seasonal entry of calves sold to a decent
trade although the best not just as dear as recent.
Top of the day was £345 for a Limousin bull from
Kathryn Starr of Dunkeswell who sold another at
£255. British Blue bulls to £268 for Martin & Liz
Bennett of Broadhembury with others to £245 &
£240 for Messrs CR & JM Carr of Cheriton
Fitzpaine. Simmnetal bulls to £200 for Martin & Liz
Bennett. Hereford Bulls sold very well and were
trade of the day topping at £260 for Derek
Burrough of Yarcombe who sold others to £205 &
£200 twice. Weaned Aberdeen Angus steers sold
to £275 & £265. Heifers topped at £225 for a
British Blue with others to £192, £180 & £175 for
Ashley & Jess Bond of Honiton. Simmental heifers
to £175 for Messrs GE Furneaux & Sons of Modbury.

Orphans topped at £35 & £23 (x2) for strong sorts from Roger Maynard & family of Hele as both Tom Yandle of Mamhead
and Peter Vooght of South Brent sold nice lambs at £22 and best of the rest were £12-£19, but second quality sorts were £5 to £10 giving an average of £15.60.
A tidy number of 1459 store lambs were a similar trade with the best slightly dearer but the plainer longer term lambs
slightly less giving a near identical average of £67.90. Best lambs to £93.50 & £85 for Suffolk cross ram lambs from David
& Lynda Pellow of Sourton, £92.50 for Ian Rowe of Whiddon Down, £92 for Lin Loosemore of Yeoford and £89 for Keith
Vincent of Grampound. Three vendors reached £87.50 being Roy Gillard of Drewsteignton, FJ Hayball & Sons of Bickleigh and Phil Taylor of Dunsford with plenty of other forward and short keep lambs trading from £74 to £84.
Grazers to £72.50 again for Ian Rowe with a pair of crossbred ewes whilst a teaser ram realised £59.50 for Ben Cullen of Exeter. -LAMB EWES
A smaller number of couples were a serious trade with Mark Brown of Uplowman selling 6T/FM Dorset Mule ewes with
young doubles at £190 but quite astonishingly singles with the same comment to £188 (x2), £180, £170 & £165 or £94
(x2), £90 & £85/life. Alan Bickley of Puddington sold pure Dorset F/BM doubles to £182 & £170 as well as singles at
£155. More needed to satisfy the current demand. Average per outfit was £175.75 (up £15) and per life broke the £80 mark at £80.42 (up £16!).
