Twintec AG is the parent company of TwintecBaumot Group (TBG), a leading supplier in the
area of exhaust gas aftertreatment and engine development. In that context, TBG offers its
customers high-quality solutions in Design & Engineering and Products & Solutions as well as
Testing & Validation Services. TBG applies those products and services across a wide range
of industries in the business fields OEM (original equipment), retrofitting, aftermarket (repair,
spare parts) and catalytic coating. In so doing, it covers the entire value creation chain for
the exhaust gas aftertreatment sector. The market segments include, in particular, on-road
(e.g. cars, trucks and other commercial vehicles), off-road (e.g. construction machinery,
agricultural machinery or stationary plant) and miscellaneous applications such as maritime
or medical technology.
Within its four subsidiaries, TwintecBaumot Group has more than 380 employees and deca-
des of experience in the field of exhaust gas aftertreatment. Acquired in 2015, Kontec
GmbH, together with its subsidiary DIF (Die Ideenfabrik GmbH), represents the OEM develop-
ment arm of the company, offering low-emission engines and exhaust gas aftertreatment
systems to well-known original equipment manufacturers. Baumot AG, which was acquired
in 2014, is one of the leading providers of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems as
well as active and passive particulate filters in the OEM and retrofitting business sectors.
In addition, as a specialist in the development of emissions technology, Twintec Technologie
GmbH offers its customers innovative solutions for reducing exhaust gas emissions especial-
ly in the retrofitting and aftermarket segments. Through Interkat GmbH, TBG has expertise
in catalytic coating services, which are offered across a wide range of industries.

With current developments for medium duty appplications, heavy duty applications and
NRMM the TwintecBaumot group is in approval procedures.

The products are used in nearly all areas of the automotive sector. These include, among
others, solutions in the on-road segment for passenger cars, commercial vehicles, buses
and vans, as well as in the off-road segment for mobile machinery such as excavators, road
rollers or trenchers and stationary equipment such as combined heat and power plants.
Moreover, along with passive and active diesel particle filter systems (DPF), the product port-
folio also includes the BNOx SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. The development
and production of catalytic converters for emissions reduction focuses on the coating of
carrier materials (ceramics and metals) with catalytically active substances – noble metals,
for example – as well as on the development of new and more efficient coating processes.

CONFORMING TO LEGALLY STIPULATED EMISSION LIMITS IN EUROPE
CONSTRUCTION VEHICLES AND STATIONARY PLANT ARE NO EXCEPTIONS
Exhaust gases from diesel engines contain pollutants. Soot particulates are carcinogenic,
while nitrogen oxides are responsible for ozone formation and acid rain.
Since there will not be any alternative to diesel engines in the off-road sector for years to
come, it will not be sufficiently possible to reduce emissions and even pollutants inside the
engine to a minimum, meaning that efficient exhaust gas aftertreatment systems will be in
demand.
Twintec offers economical solutions for new machinery and conversions which can stand up
to daily punishment and will still be doing their job years in the future.
The new and binding emissions regulations, Euro Stage III B and US EPA Interim Tier 4,
which have been in effect in Europe and the USA respectively since the start of 2011, dic-
tate a drastic tightening of emission limits.
The particulate output of mobile machinery is to be reduced by 90% below previous levels,
while oxides of nitrogen are to be reduced by 50%. After 2014, the Stage IV/Tier 4 final
standards started to come into force, reducing the limits still further.
STRICTER EMISSION LIMITS
Environmental criteria are having an ever greater influence on decisions related to tenders
for building contracts.
Even now, competitive advantages are becoming apparent for those companies using the
latest exhaust treatment technology for their construction equipment. In countless major
projects, particle filters for the vehicles and machinery to be used are already obligatory.
Among the examples are the “Ecological Tendering Criteria for Particulate Filters In Const-
ruction Equipment” issued by the city of Frankfurt am Main in Germany.

Exhaust aftertreatment is vitally needed for reasons of workplace health and safety, too.
Well informed investigations have established that the risk of lung cancer for workers using
mobile machinery is many times higher than for employees not subjected to such diesel
exhaust fumes.
Construction insurers BG Bau are currently working on a Europe-wide obligation for particu-
late filters in construction machinery in order to minimize health risks at work sites involving
such machinery.

The DPF-BA system is based on a cata-

The DPF-BAB system is based on a
catalytically coated cordierite monolith
in combination with a similarly coated
diesel oxidation catalytic converter (or
DOC) located upstream. The function of
the DOC is to keep the content of NO2
molecules high enough that particulates
are even oxidized at relatively low avera-
ge exhaust temperatures of just 220°C.
The enriched quantity of NO2 molecules
is, however, reduced again afterwards
in the coated monolith.

The DPF-BAH system with its heating
coil can even be used at extremely low
exhaust temperatures, such as in die-
sel powered emergency power plants
and generators. The built-in modular
heating coil has a monitoring unit which
continuously measures the load on the
particle filter. When the limiting value is
reached, heating starts automatically.
This means that the machine is cont-
inually heated up to the temperature
necessary for regeneration to occur du-
ring operation.

With the help of a burner system, it is possible to increase the exhaust tem-perature of an engine up to as high as 350°C even when under partial load or idling. This enables the filter to regene-rate continuously (continuously regene-rating trap – CRT) and also ensures re-duction of pollutants (CO, HC). For engines with cylinder capacity < 6 liters, the exhaust temperature can be raised to > 600°C while the engine is idling in order for the particulate filter to regenerate in about 20 minutes.
