Carol Stewart’s still-lifepaintings are studies of light,pattern and color.

With decorative extrava-gance and a sense of play, eachpiece features numerous cups,vases, fruits and flowers arranged upon brightly colored draperies.

Stewart, born in Canada,received her Bachelor of FineArts degree in 1981 fromQueens University in Kingston,Ontario; and her master’s in2010 from Fontbonne Uni-versity near St. Louis, whereshe lived and worked for manyyears. She recently moved tocentral Ohio.

Her paintings are over-the-top explorations that mix ges-ture and realism. Traversingher compositions from cup tocloth to vase, one discoversrepeated shapes and surpris-ing color harmonies in objectsthat are otherwise benign.

Some works are inspired bytravel. Patterns From India hasa celebratory air in terms of itspalette and intensity. By focus-ing on the transparency ofglass, Stewart plays hide-and-

seek with viewers. Spaceseems tenuous as one exam-ines background objectsthrough ones in the fore-ground.

The polka dots on the

drapery in Polka Dot Paintingare seen through transparentobjects and look like confetti.

Directional light helps orderthe chaos in Pink Painting.

Stewart is at her best whenthe energy of her mark en-velops her still-life objects inan atmospheric haze. In TwoRanunculus, a green draperyswallows up forms, creating a

dreamlike space open to inter-pretation.

Whether poetic explorationsor simple records of daily life,the still life has a long, richhistory.

Stewart’s paintings, pleasantand comfortable, are essen-tially records of experience.
