Axel S. Herrmann Hubert BorgmannUniversität Bremen MESSE BREMEN Conference Chair ITHEC Project Manager ITHEC

Welcome to the City of Bremen for the 2nd International Conference & Exhibition on Thermoplastic Composites. It is a great pleasure for us to have you here again.

With the launch of ITHEC, International Conference and Exhibition on Thermoplastic Composites, in 2012 we obviously managed to catch the spirit of the current discussion. Right off the bat, we achieved the defined aim to establish an international industrial forum on lightweight construction based on reinforced thermoplastic composites. Industry in the automotive, aeronautic, energy and engineering sectors appreciates the main promises of reduced lead times to match the tact of mass production, despite higher material costs.

At this point, thermoplastic composites are more aimed at enlarging the variety of efficient production technologies than replacing their thermoset counterparts in a full range. Furthermore, they can be easily combined with processes well established in plastics industry. Flexible processes promise the chance to even merge thermoplastic composites with metal or injection moulding parts in order to enlarge their range of applications into zones being affected by more intensive thermic or mechanical stress.

For this reason ITHEC 2014 will have an additional focus on processes and technologies of CFRP hybrid structures for high performance applications. Again, we have managed to invite well-known international experts from leading companies and institutes to present their latest results, to highlight the new perspectives and to give clear impulses for all the branches above. Come and share their expertise.

We are looking forward to an interesting event highlight and wish you a pleasant stay here in the Hanseatic City of Bremen.

The Laser Zentrum Hannover e. V. (LZH) participates in research and development projects for laser development and laser applications. One exploratory topic of the LZH is the laser treatment of fiber reinforced materials. This subject is investigated by the Composites Group with the focus on repairing and cutting of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP). In addition, laser transmission welding processes for joining thermoplastics to CFRP are developed to provide the possibility of manufacturing parts like those demonstrated in the Eurostars project LaWocs.

Surface Generation Ltd. Stand No. B 127 Brackenbury Court, Lyndon Barns, Edith Weston RoadLyndon, Oakham, Rutland LE15 8TW, United KingdomT +44 (0) 870 013 [email protected]

Surface Generation is a world leader in the design and manufacture of advanced Plastics, Composites, Metals and Glass processing solutions based around its patented PtFS technology (Production to Functional Specification) for the Aerospace, Automotive and Consumer Electronics industries.

Founded in 2002, the company has an extensive technology portfolio and offers a product range including advanced thermal and process control systems specifically designed to maximise perfor-mance in turn-key or retrofitted applications.

Ideally suited for production with low and high temperature engineering thermosets and thermoplas-tics in single sided, matched Autoclave and Out-of-Autoclave applications, PtFS can also be used to process aluminum and titanium in hot forming and 3D printing.

With over 90 % exports, the company’s customer base includes blue chip OEM’s, Tier 1’s and Materials Suppliers around the world.

By precisely controlling temperatures during manufacturing, Surface Generation offers a step change in processing accuracy, speed, economics and part performance even with the most challenging materials, designs and applications.

Using state-of-the-art technologies, Surface Generation has challenged convention and gone back to first principles to design PtFS from the ground up to work at temperatures up to 1000°C powered only using air.

This innovation combined with custom hardware and software provides the first ‘digital moulding environment’ where ‘active thermal management’ gives massive reductions in energy consumption, cycle time and pressures needed to process even the most complex material and part combinations.
